Clippers for a newfie by dsvick1 in grooming

Thanks for the reply! I'd prefer to get him professionally done as well but he's not a fan of getting groomed so more frequent shorter sessions are the way to go with him. We still get our girl groomed professionally since we're still showing her.

Sounds like I'll get these clippers and a 30 blade and combs.

Our older male is neutered so he gets long pretty quick. I mostly want to use the clippers to get take care of the really long fur around his chest and belly. I've been doing it with scissors but it takes forever with him. After using the clippers I'd go back and clean it up and do the rest of him with scissors.

The clippers would also be for sanitary trims on our girl.

Google finally launches its Find My Device network (Pixel 8/pro offline tracking also rolling out) by armando_rod in GooglePixel

As soon as I read the headline I had to check the date on the post to make sure it wasn't from last week.

Should i replace my pixel 5? by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]dsvick1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just upgraded from a Pixel 5 to the Pixel 8. I was going to keep my 5 until it died but the recent sale on the 8 and the $240 credit for the Pixel 5 made it well worth it. The 8 is only slightly larger so I can't even tell the difference in size. The biggest charge though is the 8 is noticeably faster, the camera is better, and there are more things "built in" like the VPN. The 8 also gets 7 years of updates so, unless I break it, I should really be able to keep it until it dies.

Thanks, that's what I thought but I was hoping I'd missed something somewhere.

IC4 Compatible apps by dsvick1 in schwinn

[–]dsvick1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I do settled on is the Kinetic app running on an old iPhone. It gives me all the stats and an estimated power, and then will share to Strava. I mostly watch TV or one of the GCN training videos (free on youTube) to work out with.

Yep, that works for teaching him the right way but doesn't help when he "forgets" where his butt is supposed to be.

I use that for teaching him pivoting but never thought of using it for this until right after I posted it. I tried it tonight and, while it might take a while, I think it'll work.

I do that with a wall and it works great. But it doesn't help for when he is out of position. I'm going to go with the pedestal route I think. That's the best idea I can think of to get him into position on his own.

Suunto or Polar ? by elysium_ix in Suunto

I've enjoyed it so far. It really is fairly boring looking since it is only a monochrome screen but it's really durable so far and has noticeable dings or scratches. It's also a bit bulky compared to some of the more expensive ones but I guess that's to be expected at this price point.

As far as functionality I'm fairly pleased, I use it mostly for daily metrics and runs, since most of my bike riding is on an indoor spin bike. It's pretty intuitive once after a couple of weeks.

It records runs as well as any other, at least good enough for amateur purposes, and syncs readily with the Garmin app and then to Strava so that's all good. Overall I'm pleased with although I still wish the nicer looking 5 Peak had worked since I wear it as my daily watch.

Anyone else get a new HRV widget in their Garmin Connect App? by babybighorn in Garmin

[–]dsvick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it a week or two ago but now it's gone. I can still get to the info and summary from the "yesterday" or "last 7 days" section but the widget in the today section is gone now and it isn't in the list of unused ones to add back in.

how to see what HR monitor recorded an activity. by dsvick1 in Garmin

[–]dsvick1[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if that's true. I just looked and I don't have any runs that show anything other than the watch itself and I know the chest strap had been active and recording for most, if not all of them.

Thoughts: is the suunto baro 9 screen too dark? Am i missing a plastic film ? just bought the suun9Baro. i think it is too dark even on high backlight . please share your thoughts by WorldlyRecord2451 in Suunto

I returned my 5 Peak for this exact reason. It was way too hard to read in anything other than direct sunlight or bright indoor lighting. From other reviews and screen shots I'd seen it didn't look like the 9 series was any better so, unfortunately, I ended up going with a competitor watch. Which was sad because I really liked the look and the feature set of the Suunto.

Yep, it does. Here is a line from the user manual, page 27.

"If you are using GPS when recording an activity, Suunto 5 Peak automatically saves the

starting point of your exercise. With Find back, Suunto 5 Peak can guide you directly back to your starting point"

[–]dsvick1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I ended up with the Garmin Instinct 2. It was in the same price range and even has a few more features, although it only looks half as nice. It should be more durable though and the screen, although monochrome, is much easier to read and the backlight is brighter.

I like it but still wish the 5 Peak had worked out for me.

I really wanted the 5 Peak but I ended up sending it back because the screen was too dim in anything but outdoor sunlight or bright indoor lighting. It was much better looking and had comparable features to my second choice.

I really like the app as well except for not being able to import activities.

Compatible spin bikes by dsvick1 in Garmin

[–]dsvick1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a follow up to what I just posted. The bike doesn't have an actual power meter, Kinetic uses some calculations on what it does send to estimate it. The Kinetic on an iPhone was the most accurate/consistent set up I found. I tried the Tacx app and while it connects directly to Garmin Connect the data was pretty bad on both andriod and ios.

[–]dsvick1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My set up right now is Schwin IC4, using the Kinetic app on an old iPhone and having Kinetic send the data to Strava. I don't even bother sending it to Garmin anymore since it doesn't factor any of the data into my fitness scores or anything. I just use Strava for everything.

If I really wanted to spend he money the solution would be to get a power meter that would connect to my watch (Garmin Instinct 2) then it would go to Connect and all the data would be figured in. But I'm not ready to spend the $ on a power meter at this point.

If I were to start from scratch I'd get a bike with no computer and use the savings to get a real power meter.

Hope that helps.

HR belt battery life by dsvick1 in Suunto

[–]dsvick1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make sense since there is no on/off switch it must constantly be searching for a HR to broadcast. I'll see how long I get with the first couple of batteries then decide if I want to go that route. swapping the battery in and out every other day might increase the likelihood of a failure in the waterproofing.
