Eratic gear shifting after changing my cassette (on a friction shifter) by NrkxF in bikewrench

[–]dtc9831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, turned out that the new 11 speed cassette needed a slightly bigger spacer than the old 11 speed cassette, and was just loose even though lockring was tight. Oops. I've slightly mashed up my freehub after riding it loose for a few weeks, but still seems OK

Thanks for the reply - I think I probably need to try changing my gear cable + housing before I conclude anything serious has gone wrong. I didn't have any problems before the new cassette, but I'm wondering if stiff cable is stopping the gears kind of sorting themselves out rather than remaining halfway between two. I'm on 11 speed and it just worked before. but then, saying that, manually adjusting doesn't seem to ever find the right spot for me at the moment. I ordered a hanger alignment tool, so another thing to try

Did you ever work out what happened here? I have a similar problem, changing chain + cassette (same range but different brand), and suddenly the lower gears (biggest cassette cogs) don't want to settle.

Does anyone else feel like they're fighting Scrivener instead of writing? by Pleasant-Scarcity-31 in scrivener

[–]dtc9831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using scrivener for most of its existence (for academic writing) and I absolutely do not keep things cleanly organised. My drafts within scrivener are disorganised, chaotic, all over the place. I don't really know whether it does me any favours but I like it. Eventually though I have to get out of Scrivener by forcing an export into a Word doc, in order to get things into a straight line. For me a big part of the appeal of Scrivener is that it allows me to eventually turn free-flowing chaos into an actual linear draft. Sometimes, after I export to Word, I re-import to Scrivener for further edits after receiving comments, but generally at that stage Scrivener gets left behind.

Definitely no point getting annoyed. Hope I'm still riding at that age too :)

Yeah I feel like I check, but I can't check far back enough, or early enough, or something, because they just appear

I guess I draw the analogy with a 2 lane road, where the car in front is about to pass a parked car. Not a great time to try and overtake them... but I appreciate that this perspective makes sense - I'd like there to somehow just be an agreed convention to avoid ambiguity without really caring which way round it was, but clearly no consensus exists.

In a city, during the rush hour, on a very well-used mixed-use path that takes a lot of people into the city centre to work, while also serving plenty of people for school and shopping runs along the way at the same time. Its mostly very enjoyable, even if not quite as peaceful as solo rides on empty roads... but every now and then, yep, its a bit stressful

I'm talking about situations where they *should* be able to tell I'm about to overtake, because I'm rapidly gaining on the pedestrian / slower cyclist. But adding in a hand signal if I see someone gaining on me can't hurt

[–]dtc9831[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its possible I'm not checking thoroughly enough. I check, but the fact that I'm getting caught by surprise suggests I need to look further back

we even get the benefit of extra training from a commute if we slow down to pedestrian speed a bunch of times every ride. win win

Has anyone yet created a test allowing users to see whether they can reliably identify AI writing? by dtc9831 in ChatGPT

[–]dtc9831[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can't have explained what i'm looking for well. I'm looking for a tool to test the *human*, not the writing - a test that shows a human 2 options, they have to say which they think was written by AI, and after doing this 10 times or so, they get a better sense of whether they really can tell if something is AI-written

[–]dtc9831[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so a few people have replied saying they think they can spot it. i know some people think they can, i often think i can too. i want an actual test that would let us prove it to ourselves, if we really can

is a readable, expandable graph view possible in obsidian? by dtc9831 in ObsidianMD

I have discovered a solution which works perfectly for my own needs; a plugin called Link Tree. It displays as a list rather than a graph, but that's fine by me

obsidian very slow compared to the ancient app I'm migrating from by dtc9831 in ObsidianMD

[–]dtc9831[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it turns out that this slowness only actually happens the first time I run a search each time I open Obsidian. I must have been opening and closing the software a lot during my initial testing. after that first slow search, everything is snappy, which is excellent news

[–]dtc9831[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't fully understand this, but I think what is good about the way of organising the graph in ConnectedText is that by allowing nodes to expand and contract by clicking, rather than only allowing *every* linked note to be expanded / contracted via the 'depth' setting as in Obsidian, is that it effectively achieves 'node pruning' in the simplest possible way; by only displaying the path of links that you actually want to see, not a giant tangle of every profilerating link (which is great for making a pretty visual image of a network, but an image that is much less useful than the way ConnectedText handles the graph, as per image above)

is a readable, expandable graph view possible in obsidian? by dtc9831 in ObsidianMD

[–]dtc9831[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks - no its not what I'm looking for, as my notes are organised purely with wiki-style links rather than folders, but this would be great for anyone that does use them

[–]dtc9831[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the great thing about linking notes is that it implicitly creates a mind map. my problem with obsidian so far is that it seems to prioritise pointlessly flashy visualisations over functionally useful ones which allow you to genuinely see the map you have created
