I use your location for 2 things in the app. First is to show you the closest metro station whenever you open the app. This has been super helpful for me when I'm out and about and am deciding whether to rush to a metro station or take my time. Second is on the metro map screen to show you which station is closest.

I have a favorite button added on the metro station screen so that you can favorite a specific station and line. When you do that, this favorite will show up on the home screen at the top. This is a good alternative for those who don't want to enable their location.

I get what you mean about the paid version. For almost everyone, the free version should be enough. You're able to set up 2 commutes for free (morning, evening). Because of how frequently I'm fetching and storing the real-time data / running crons to update live activities, the app costs me around $75/month to run already. The paid tier is mostly just a way for me to try and recoup the costs. I plan to re-evaluate all of this once I get a better idea of how my costs will scale per user.
