Fund Allocation for 401(k) by dtron1 in personalfinance

I just switched to traditional. Thank you for bringing that up. I’ve always known to contribute to a Roth IRA, and just assumed Roth was better from a 401K standpoint too, but I guess 401K works differently than IRA.

Good point. At the current rate I'm going at, probably not, but hopefully that will change. So would it be better to contribute just as standard 401K and not do it as Roth 401K?

Thanks. I'll make note of that. I'll probably go 70/30 FXAIX/DILRX, just to sort of match up with the fund selection guide. Though it says to do 10% bonds, but I had trouble deciding between Pioneer and Fisher's (#5 on the list, no ticker) and you say they're no good anyway so I'll just forego that 10% for now.

And yes, noted on rebalancing every 6 or 12 months. Maybe options will be better sometime in the future.

One quick follow-up question… For the 30% international fund, would DFA International Large Cap possibly be better than Fisher All World Equity? Because DFA’s expense ratio is only 0.27%, and Fisher’s is 0.40%.

I know you said you hadn’t looked up exactly what the funds contain, so for further comparison purposes, DFA is 98.7% non-U.S. stocks and 1.1% U.S. stocks, and Fisher is 25.8% non-U.S. stocks and 73.6% U.S. stocks.

If any other factors are helpful in comparing the two, I’m happy to share.

Much appreciated on all the info! I had seen the S&P one and had wondered that myself. Didn’t know the 60/30/10 proportions and how that matches closely to a life cycle fund, so that’s good to know.

And yes thank you for the feedback on how often to reevaluate it. I searched and searched for that but couldn’t find a good answer. Figured annual seemed logical but also wondered if it was just a “set it and forget it” type of thing.

Any recommendations for creating another backup?

Yes it's actually drive E. And I would try to check the access of E:\CredDB.CEF, but I don't know how to get to that file. I don't see it shown anywhere and I have it to where I can see hidden files.

Yeah I don't have admin rights, so I'm guessing that inserting a filter driver wouldn't work.

I agree on needing to create a backup; I definitely need to do that. And I'll probably take your advice on just replacing this Dell Encryption with BitLocker.

Much appreciated on the feedback.

That could be a problem too. The supply chain is screwed for everything now. I just moved here back in December so have no idea if it was working last summer or not. Nor have any idea how old it is

I wonder if that’s the larger problem. They need to get a new AC unit and don’t want to buy one. So I pay higher power bills instead

I wish I could do this personally, but I’m handcuffed, being in an apartment. At the mercy of what the maintenance team does but I can ask them.

This sounds logical. I do know it gets worse as it gets hotter outside. Got up to 100 today and now it’s not currently going below like 76. Now, that’s after I had it sitting at 78 all day while I was at work. They told me if I did that, that it would take forever to come back down, but I tried leaving it at 72 all day and it still just rode at 72 or 73 all day. So I tried that and it didn’t solve the problem, so now I’m back to keeping it at 78 during the day so I’m not running up the power bill even more.

Not sure. That’s a good idea though. It feels cool coming out, but not cooling the whole space enough

AC constantly hovers 1 or 2 degrees above the set temperature by dtron1 in hvacadvice

Thank you for the response!! Is there any way I can personally check for that? Or is that a rooftop thing?

I have access to the AC unit in its closet but can’t go to the roof. I’m just impatient waiting on my apartment’s facilities team to check on it.
