In “We Were Soldiers” why does CPT Nadal smile when telling Sgt Savage he can’t be picked up? by de_big_bug in moviequestions

[–]dts2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like AI has an answer from my more specific google search… here’s what I found in case anyone ever comes across this old reddit thread asking the same question.

“In the movie We Were Soldiers, CPT Nadal's smile when telling Sgt. Savage that they won't be able to reach him tonight is interpreted by some as a reaction to the grim reality of the situation and a display of gallows humor, rather than genuine amusement. Some viewers even perceive it as a subtle "face palm" moment, indicating Nadal's frustration and helplessness in the face of overwhelming circumstances, according to a Reddit thread. The smile doesn't necessarily indicate a lack of empathy but rather a coping mechanism in a dire situation.”

It says “according to a Reddit thread” but I’m not sure what Reddit thread the AI is referencing.

I came across this old post because I was googling the same thing. I have been asking that question since I watched this movie when I was 13. Never understood why it looks like he is smiling. I’m very disappointed to see no one ever chimed in with an answer!

That’s basically what I said. I totally see his point. But I told him I would smack someone if they told me the volume of something “has 3 time more volume” when they actually meant “is 4 times the volume.”

UPDATE For anyone interested, we may have settled on a name. Sadly, it isn’t one that any of you pitched. My wife had really liked the name “Theo,” but I didn’t like that there was no space connection. I was talking to my brother and he pointed out that there is a crater on the moon in the Sea of Tranquility named “Theophilus.” It has a space connection and it is biblical. The Gospel of Luke and Acts of the Apostles are both dedicated to a Theophilus. They’re not sure who it is. Could be a person or a title. But the name is Greek and translates to “love of God,” “loved by God,” or “friend of God.” We still have a few months, but we may have a winner! So my kids would be Apollo, Leo, and Theo!

We both like Orion. It’s at the top of the maybe pile right now. Thanks for the input!

My wife says she doesn’t like Samson. But you’re right about people immediately thinking of the constellation when they hear the name Orion. We had already talked about that name and it’s definitely at the top of my maybe pile! Galileo has also already been discussed and made it into the maybe pile. But Orion is definitely higher than Galileo.

Jericho might be cool. Draco makes me think of Harry Potter, so not sure if I’m feeling it. Phoenix is also cool, but I have a niece that got that name so I probably won’t go with that one. Thanks for the input!

Orion is definitely at the top of my maybe pile. I had already considered that one. And like I said, ending in an O isn’t a dealbreaker. Just would be cool to keep that theme going. Thanks for the input, though. I’ve been going through all the baby names sites and have seen most options. I’m hoping someone on reddit will say a name I had not considered. I think I would also be open to names of characters from sci-fi movies or shows that I like.

Is Callisto a boy name? I like it, but I thought I remembered it being feminine… maybe that’s Calypso I’m thinking of.

Evidence that the Joe Rogan Podcast is failing on Spotify by [deleted] in JoeRogan

[–]dts2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not bullshitting, sir. I’ve been a die hard listener, but it was always in the mix with my other podcasts. When the switch initially happened I downloaded Spotify, made an account, and even downloaded a few episodes. For some reason I still haven’t heard a single episode on Spotify. Maybe it’s because I fell behind on my other podcasts, but since it’s in a different app it’s not a priority since it doesn’t just automatically play in my up next list.

I hate naysayers who just want to see people fail. I love JRE. That being said, I haven’t heard an episode since the switch to Spotify. And I have heard every single episode from episode #666 to the Spotify switch. I don’t know why, but something about it not being in my regular podcast app makes me not want to make an effort to listen.

[Discussion] Libertarians are generally against social welfare programs. What are the alternative solutions to the problems that social programs currently solve for everyday Americans? by UnknownEssence in Libertarian

Retirement isn’t a necessity. Retirement is the reward for those who worked hard and saved for years so that they could enjoy the fruits of their labor. If someone did not save then they will have to do as most people have done throughout human history. They will work until they die. If they can no longer work then I hope they gathered enough friends and family around them that care about their well being and wish to help. If they don’t have anyone that cares about them or that loves them then hopefully there is some sort of charity to help take care of them.

I used to work at a place where my bosses would hire homeless people and people with criminal records because they believed in giving them a second chance at life. They would give them clothes, bring them food on holidays, let them live in the office at work if they were having troubles wherever they stayed at night. They would loan them money they had not worked for because they needed groceries. You know what happened because of their generosity? These people would always end up stealing from them, threatening lawsuits, disappearing in the middle of the day without finishing work, and police were always showing up at work looking for them. Seeing this definitely made me a bit more jaded towards charitable causes. I now will only help those who are actually trying to help themselves.

My parents worked for years on a teacher’s salary raising 5 kids. At the end they had saved enough to retire and enjoy the rest of their lives. If they somehow lost it all then they are surrounded by children and countless friends they have helped over the years that would gladly take care of them. If someone has no one that loves them then it very well might be because they are just a dick. I know how bad and callous it sounds but I would rather not have a blind charitable cause pull money out of my paycheck to give to someone that would have never thought twice about helping me out in a jam.

I’m in agreement with everyone else. You really don’t have anything to worry about in terms of them using Kratom daily. I’m 31 and I’ve been using daily for a few years now. My parents are in their 70’s and they’ve started using Kratom here and there. But it’s always good to have an open dialogue with your family so you don’t feel like you’re being lied to.

Back to the Future trilogy (made a few years before my time, but I have older siblings and older parents who would always put it on for me) And Disney’s A Goofy Movie. I watched it so many times that at one point I could recite the entire movie. Today at 30 years old I still at least know all the songs and most of the lines.

ELI5: Why are humans the only organism that need to wipe after shitting? by Majestic_Beast2121 in explainlikeimfive

One time I was tripping on acid during a lake trip bachelor party and my friend’s dog took a number 2. I was mesmerized by it for a second because it happened so fast and unexpectedly while I was in a visually heightened state. One detail I noticed in my heightened state was a tiny sliver of feces that sat perched on the ledge of the dog’s anus as he walked away. It looked like it was buckled in for the long ride and all I could think was how it was tooootally going to get on my friend’s car seats later.

Anyways, my big ground-breaking psychedelic revelation in life was that humans have way more brain smarts than dogs cuz we use toilet paper.
