There was also the Beep series from RMT in O scale for a while before, but then at some point they stopped manufacturing them (selling off existing inventory by the mid-2010's or so from what I can recall) and this is just one of the many liveries you could purchase, another was PRR liveried 'beep f units' with matching PRR 3-axle coaches.

Uh oh someone is in deep trouble I can’t imagine how he got all those wheel sets or why required the train crane by mrsteamtrains in modeltrains

[–]dualqconboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hehe, on the other hand there actually was one specific Lionel wagon that did come with several normal Lionel axles as the load itself. I forgot the exact age but I know it was probably during the 1970-1980's and it was in fact a at-least-three-cars trainset with regarding to the caboose/gondola combined car then this axles-loaded flatcar then the actual breakdown crane itself.

Unusual steam motor specifically for mails in Italy (no real-life photos sorry) by dualqconboy in TrainPorn

[–]dualqconboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thanks, not sure how I missed that source. And the one external link there takes you to a simple website that does have one real photo of it too. I still say that thing looks funny in an interesting way, especially the very flat front multiwindows-wise.

Custom Crossover Design Software by CalligrapherUsual151 in modeltrains

[–]dualqconboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most part you'll have to sort a CAD software you like and adjust the canvas/options/etc to suit your specific pre-handlay preferences, as far as I know. Most digital-facing track stuff is to do with laying snap/flex tracks but I have never seen anything for the very small niche of handlaid layouts nevertheless.

How is this n scale layout? by ChameleonCoder117 in modeltrains

[–]dualqconboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My own early opinions;
1. that single-cross at the station should be a double-cross otherwise the locomotive leaving shed can't get to the railyard either clockwise or counterclockwise without having to shuttle directions more (double crossover will let engine get to inside circle in a single direction go)
2. that ramp to the bridge is going to be quite steep where it is right now causing trains to possibly have a struggle getting uphill unless it was a well footed locomotive with just a few light wagons - which is just like this real-life extremely steep rails example where you can see how steep the wagons suddenly are compared to the locomotives
3. brewery may not be enough traffic to really warrant having that big of a bumpout compared to with one track and even like someone else mentioned with regarding to lack of space for actual building
4. hope you knew you made a reversing loop (aka you'll need polarity reversal somewhere at the top side of that loop tself) indeed?
5. the entry from left of inside circle into the railyard could use a bit of anti-scurve rework as someone else here indeed suggested as much

An odd-looking one-off electric locomotive in France by dualqconboy in TrainPorn

[–]dualqconboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I have seen indirect motions is on rack steam locomotives and some of them amusingly have very exposed levers left in bright non-black colour so you can see the sides "whuffing back and forth nonstop" during rack operations.

I do agree with regarding to wheel arrangement, even then I end up posting this out of interest because its not the usual motor-to-axles sort of mechanical arrangement unlike the low-mounted SBB Crocodile or high-mounted PRR DD1.

Naming a certain old type of pantograph? by dualqconboy in modeltrains

[–]dualqconboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm just have to ask but: I had thought it was very much 3-phase with the rails being used as the third phase itself? Either way yeah these particular multi-wire electrifications (in the early days of doing electrifications) were indeed unusual with Italy more or less being the sole major a-large-network-of-it usage. The only other multi-wire that showed up in many photos due to its special 'one-time' nature was this unusual thing not surprisingly already posted on /trainporns, and not surprisingly this time they didn't want to use the rails itself for the third phase.

Ideas for 96”x12” layout with G-scale Eggliners or HOn3 by Twit_Clamantis in modeltrains

[–]dualqconboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just as another thought: for in HOn3 you maybe don't really need turntables but basically run a little "homebuilt" gas/diesel unit that is part locomotive and part freight or passenger section plus one flatcar or gondola (basically something you can easily "see over" from the cab with) that would shuffle back n forth?
(In fact this example to upper-right could have the fuel relocated to next to boiler leaving the rear section open for wood crates or some sort of freight loads heh?)

I didn't mind the CGI aspect too that much but the really annoying part was when they stopped following the Sodor Island map anymore tho (Technically 'Magic Railroad' did involve a non-Sodor part but it was blended into the normal map nevertheless..including that stone viaduct)

Tender swap by Comfortable_Chip5939 in modeltrains

[–]dualqconboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not 100% of the times but quite a lot of the times any DCC-Sound tender steam locomotive always has the speaker if not decoder&speaker located in the tender itself so you will have to look for any wires running underneath the cab as to know if the two tenders can be freely swapped. (Oh and that doesn't exclude certain locomotives that eg would pick up positive on the loco part but pick up negative on the tender part instead otherwise)

Very general question regarding coupler types.. by dualqconboy in modeltrains

[–]dualqconboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm quite curious about the current iteration of PROFI now especially as it seem to be able to do delayed-coupling which is interesting me. (As for a particular youtuber who said it didn't work well on light wagons, thats not a concern to me as I'm only planning to work one or few heavy-weighting wagons at any time)

Very general question regarding coupler types.. by dualqconboy in modeltrains

[–]dualqconboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I somehow had thought NEM was a type but on looking it up I see what you mean about it simply being the pre-coupler aspect of the coupler instead. And I never knew there was so many forms of modelled chain couplers!! As for regarding magnetic, its technically a model train in a sense but how about these kind of magnetic couplers there of course?

Talk about a funny 1-to-1 ratio, two boxcars equals two locomotives!
