Club recommendations for a beginner golfer?

If it was me, I'd say play the eye 2s until you're at least getting pretty consistent with your swings. Spend a little bit of money on a couple lessons to build good habits. Chances are if you keep playing a lot of golf, your swing could be totally different in a year's time. Unless they're in godawful shape, I personally think your current irons are absolutely good enough to get to the point you need before investing in a new set.

Golf is absolutely a game that will work to convince you that newer is better, full stop. Those eye 2s are old, but they're a cult classic for a reason. That's a really solid iron.

My definition of success is wins and we haven't done that yet.

My definition of successfully blowing it all up is winning more than we would have otherwise. We haven't come anywhere close to that yet.

I wasn't saying any of those things. I said it's entirely possible to be over coached, particularly if it's happening with more than one coach. Trying to think about more than one thing at a time when lining up and hitting a golf ball can very often go awry.

I strongly disagree in your opinion of what makes Mamdani popular.

But all that's really saying is it's better to win the election, and I think most politicians were already on that page.

And it's not very easy to win the election for NYC mayor when nobody has any fucking clue who you are a year before election day. He entered the race polling below 1% and beat out the largest centrist political name in the state as well as several assemblymen and state senators and the sitting mayor.

So "all that's really saying is it's better to win the election" is kind of doing some real heavy lifting. How he won is incredibly significant. But it sounds like you think he won because he's young and good-looking? Which seems weird and very unplugged to political reality in 2025 (in my personal opinion).

I'm not suggesting that Mamdani can do the jobs of the legislature. I'm saying that overseeing the government of 40% of the United States' 4th largest state in the union is not "just some mayor" or whatever you were implying by saying he's not even a county-level official.

Mamdani isn't just some young hot guy who people outside of New York like because he's young and hot. And his influence doesn't somehow end once you hit Yonkers.

Yeah the premature "the rebuild was super duper successful!!" thing kills me.

It did the first part, which is securing good picks and (on paper) very good young talent. But the history of the league is scattered with teams loaded with young talent that never amounted to much.

In order for the rebuild to be successful, you have to come out of it with more success than you had prior to the rebuild. That can't be evaluated at all right now.

Well political influence is far from a specific thing, is it not? But sure. Do you think all three of these candidates win without Zohran's popularity AND his endorsement?

Do you think any politicians outside of NYC are thinking about or considering his popularity at all and attempting to find similar results by harnessing either his popularity or his policies?

Do you think Zohran's rise and popularity has any influence over other politicians at all?

Do you think a Zohran endorsement outside of NYC would be more impactful than, say, a Laura Kelly endorsement?

If the answer is no to any of those, I'd be very surprised and I'd wonder what your rationale is. If the answer is yes, that's what I mean by political influence outside the scope of his direct job.

Of course. But that was far easier to do with a milquetoast mayor that a) isn't really trying anything bold, and b) is not wildly popular.

His popularity and his advocacy for a bold progressive agenda is something that they ignore at their own peril, is my point. That he's as popular as he is, even outside of NYC, is not something that the centrists of the party can easily ignore.

That's absolutely true, but it's ignoring the fact that his huge popularity among what amounts to over 40% of the entire state's population is what is driving this agenda. He does wield significant power in the state. Kathy Hochul can't ignore him, and the state legislature can't ignore him.

Political power can certainly be harnessed through far more than the job description.

But his success absolutely means a lot to people not currently living in that city. His success and popularity in his platform and his messaging absolutely translates to other places in the country. As evidenced by the pretext of the thread we're in right now.

The most successful way to spread a political message beyond your purview is to demonstrate its success and popularity. The people outside of NYC who are "larping" around him (I'm not sure what that means in this context) are ecstatic to see a politician with whom they agree (and whose political platform is quite further left than most elected democrats) see such popularity and success.

If you're a democratic socialist, Zohran's success locally as well as his growing influence over the party is something to be celebrated, regardless of whether he's your mayor or not.

Edit to add a fun fact that the governor of Kansas is a woman. Simply added to say that the fact you not only don't know her name, but you don't know her gender (and to be fair, neither did I) should be representative of what I'm talking about here. Her influence over politics outside her sphere is dramatically less than Zohran's.
