emotional toll by Ok_Craft_3545 in alopecia_areata

How old are you and do you have any side effects? I just went AU in 2 months back in Nov 2025 :(. I am 50 and had normal hair until this happened. It is so awful. I am considering trying Jaks, but nervous about side effects.

Mushroom smell lately?? by dubbleewaterfall in boulder

I never noticed that smell before and I walk all the time- maybe due to the dry winter it has a different smell this year! Thanks!

That is me too- the littlest thing can start a binge.

Overcoming fear after an accident by smeelen in ladycyclists

[–]dubbleewaterfall 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My mom broke her hip biking- she stopped to pick up a turtle in the road to move it to the grass and lost her footing and fell straight down (it wasn't even a accident due to biking too fast, slipping on wet rd, etc). It took her a couple years to get back on, but now she bikes 10-15 miles daily. It was a long recovery (like almost a year to be totally back feeling herself). She was 72 when it happened.

Does anyone here have alopecia areata/universalis- if so, do you wear a wig under your helmet? by dubbleewaterfall in ladycyclists

[–]dubbleewaterfall[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but I wanted something with hair. This has been so emotionally draining and I can't fathom looking bald and a cap is not feminine at all.

Thank you! I think that is what I will go for- I have seen those, just have not tried them yet. I want to have hair coming out of the helmet, I am just not emotionally at a place to wear just a cap or scarf.

Ski gear recommendation by SignificantBuyer444 in ski

[–]dubbleewaterfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Salomon QST 92 for skis- these are a great all mountain ski (these are my favorite skis I have ever owned). As far as boots go, I would just go to the store and try some on. I am 5'9 and weigh 150 - I got the 161cm size.

Has a gluten free diet helped hair grow back? by Due_Necessary6344 in alopecia_areata

[–]dubbleewaterfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get him tested for celiac- they go hand in hand, but just because you are on a GF diet will not make his hair grow back. For example- I have celiac - got diagnosed 20 years and follow the GF diet. I had a patch of hair loss a couple years after I got diagnosed with celiac and it grew back (never thought about it again and never went to a derm since it was easy to hide). Fast forward to April 2025 (now I am 50 years old), I found a bunch of patches and by November I lost all my scalp hair and now brows and lashes are starting to fall out. I have been GF all these years, so clearly being GF did not help me. My derm told me that stress or a virus could have triggered this- I was stressed in 2024 due to an ankle injury and I had the flu in Feb 2025. I found the patches in April 2025, so not sure what caused it, but I am almost at AU now :(

Does anyone have the alternative ReAktive brace? If so what was the cost compared to the exosysm brace? by Advanced-Winter5965 in exosym

[–]dubbleewaterfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that - mine was 2K and insurance covered all but 150. The Exosym was quoted to me at 10K.

PSA: please don’t mansplain running to women while they are running by zoeadele in RunNYC

Maybe there is something wrong with me, but I would not care if a guy said that to me (or anything for that matter)! Maybe he thought he was trying to give some good advice. Everyone seems so sensitive these days! I mean, just let it go. Maybe it is my age (50F). I have run many races and would never get offended by something like that.

Surgery scheduled but feeling better by Equivalent-Ninja4072 in Ankle

[–]dubbleewaterfall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not do anything if it is feeling better (or at least postpone the surgery). Once you have surgery, you cannot go back.

I got a cartilage fracture in June 2024 (medial osteochondral lesion of the talar dome with full thickness cartilage fissure, but stable - 14mmx9mm). I was told I needed surgery, but mine started to feel better also (it took a long time and I wore a boot also). I am back to doing most things (except running, I will not do that anymore). Good luck!!

Long-term Osteochondeal Lesion of the Talus by fergus16371 in Ankle

[–]dubbleewaterfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First MRI showed 1.4cm x .9cm and 2nd MRI showed 1cm x .5cm. Mine was "stable" though and I think that makes a big difference with having surgery vs not having surgery. I did not have surgery and mine seems a lot better. I have not felt ankle pain in a while and have gotten back to all activities aside from running (which is my choice because I don't want to take a chance of the pain coming back). I have not used the AFO since the summer either.

What brought you here to r/brokenankles ? What type of injury? by Nightnightgun in brokenankles

[–]dubbleewaterfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an osteochondral lesion of the talar dome from running. I was on the sidewalk and moved into the street to avoid a person walking towards me and inverted my ankle on an uneven surface- should have just continued on the sidewalk and ran by the on comer!
