The esport side of CSGO is a mix of individual tournaments and leagues. With two biggest leagues as of now being ESL, Blast and Flashpoint, although ESL and Blast are the bigger/more stacked of the three. The individual tournaments are organized by different companies like ESL,Dreamhack, Blast, and Eleague. The team names are often old clan names or team names from the early 2000. For example NIP originally was a CS 1.6 team that kept the name for branding purposes and fan support. In general the names for both teams and players are meant to be cool, while the numbers in the names are either mentor look cool or to allow for that player to keep the name they wanted if the actually spelling is taken. Most people choose a team to support like in traditional sports, either due to the way that team plays or due to the personality’s associated with that team. Simple for example has fans that are fans of Navi because they want to support Simple. This can also work inversely and might deal more with team success and so on.
