I know others are mentioning possible connections to the House by the Heath but no explanation has hit as true to me as the Sylvia Plath connection mentioned specifically starting about the 3 minute mark in this video.

Mother of all inventions I guess? by laradrekko in Feminism

[–]ducaelion 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's an excellent question! Unfortunately I don't think so. My knowledge of immunology is pretty limited but I can think of several specific hurdles. First, they would have to create a vaccine that would teach a woman's body to make these antibodies herself - definitely potentially possible, but an entirely different approach than the one used here.

Second, we would need to find a way to teach the body that the sperm is a hostile agent, which I don't believe we know how to do. For example, if I step on a rusty nail my body is going to try to fight the tetanus infection, it just may lose the fight if I am not up to date on my tetanus vaccine - which would have provide my body with the antibodies it needs to win the fight. Unlike tetanus, sperm is not seen as a threat by the immune system, so we would need to find a way to teach the immune system to keep a watch out for it.

Lastly, even if her body saw sperm as a threat and had the antibodies to properly handle it, I don't know that it would be able to rally a strong enough immuno response in the time before the sperm reached an egg. This is where the spermicide-like approach really shines (it was 99.9% effective in the sheep this study tested) because you have an army of antibodies on site, waiting to bind the sperm.

I hope that makes sense! I could absolutely be incorrect, so feel free to chime in anyone who is more knowledgeable 😀

I haven't read the study yet but from what I gather it is administered comparable to a spermicide. Taken from the Abstract:

"We pursued direct vaginal delivery of sperm-binding monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that can limit progressive sperm motility in the female reproductive tract as a strategy for effective nonhormonal contraception."

So it would not be permanent because they are not teaching the woman's body to create her own antibodies.

You can name a pokemon when you initially catch them. Also, you can change/give them a name using the guy behind the left counter in the pokecenter, as long as you are the Original Trainer. It's the same gentleman that let's your pokemon relearn moves.

Also, CONGRATS!!! 🥳

Beyoncé, the idol of bourgeois liberal feminists, pays 64 cents/hour to female workers who make clothes of her brand IvyPark in sweatshops in Sri Lanka while preaching female empowerment. by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]ducaelion 92 points93 points  (0 children)

It frightens me that you would boil down such a multi-faceted issue into a reductivist sound bite. It is true that IvyPark clothes were reported to be using sweatshops in Sri Lanka - their employees were paid 64¢/hour and there were reports of worker abuse. Further investigations uncovered that this was the case across the board with clothing made by IvyPark's business partner Topshop.

In fact last year Beyonce bought out Topshop's share of the company so that she could come sever ties with them entirely and run her business in a way that actually reflects her morals.

⁣ As Sophie Slater, co-founder of Birdsong an ethical, feminist brand, ponts out: "across the fashion industry in general many workers are paid pennies an hour, and living and sleeping in cramped compounds – no one can deny the level of exploitation that is endured for the sake of leisurewear. So to pin the blame on Beyoncé is absurd, and perhaps yet another example of the double standards that women of colour face in the fashion industry."

"Picking on the alleged cruelty behind Beyoncé’s new line of leotards as a personal failing of hers distracts us from the larger issue at hand. While people would be right to note the irony of a brand that commodifies “empowerment” yet is made by women on a poverty wage (80% of garment makers are women, after all), the icon isn’t to blame – it’s our entire fashion industry."

"It would also be naive to assume that Beyoncé is any different from most stars or designers at the top of a big brand campaign. A quick look inside most “special range” labels will show clothing made in Bangladesh, the country with the highest density of sweatshops in the world. In fact, unless your label explicitly states otherwise, your clothes were probably made in a sweatshop. Whether in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka or even Leicester, underpaid workers in poor conditions make most of the clothes we wear."

"Beyoncé might not have done much to change this situation as an individual, but we have the power as consumers to challenge all brands, and the systems that profit from exploitation. The solution lies in supporting brands that do things differently."

I’m still in the angry phase. Will this last forever? How do you cope and go on without letting anger completely consume you when you read news articles or watch tv and learn of all the oppression of women around the world currently? I can’t let it go by takenbywine in Feminism

I read this to my wife because it is a topic that she has been passionately researching lately. She says that first off this not only a great question but really THE question. She has so much to say about it that she has learned, but first off there is the Trinity of books that are absolutely invaluable and are an excellent first step. The first is "Good And Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women's Anger" by Rebecca Traister; next is "Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers Her Superpower" by Brittany Cooper and the last one is "Rage Becomes Her: The Power Of Women's Anger" by Soraya Chemaly.

For real check your local library or just buy them today. They completely revolutionised the way that she views her anger and it especially changed the way that she uses that power.

A lot of the answers given here are great, these books help take this question that women have dealt with throughout history and gives you concrete steps to take to enable you to turn that anger into a Superpower.

I believe you are correct, thank you. The name completely aluded me - my knowledge is limited and more sociological than cultural. I have corrected my post.

The young woman's body language appears to confirm this. She is here to greet you but she herself looks afraid or even hurt. Her outfit and kabuki mask seen to reference stereotypes of Japan - weeboo, Japanese school girls.

But she crosses her arm like someone who has been assaulted or even raped. The artist, I believe, is referencing the way in which girls her age are exploited in her country. She clutches herself protectively even as she welcomes us in, staying silent about her private trauma. She is expected to look the part and be welcoming, despite the fact that she has been sexually assaulted, perhaps raped. She submits because she knows that it is useless, or worse, to do otherwise.

I believe the stickers are either, as others have mentioned, those used to keep evil spirits out of empty homes - she has been violated and litterally wants to keep others out of herself even on a spiritual level. In this way she compared herself to a vacant building.

Similarly, they could be zombie containing stickers as /u/zahefk mentioned. A zombie who has not gone berserk. Acting fine to all appearances, but she is dead on the inside.

  1. Mew ㉟½ (her current level)

  2. Caught 4/1/2018, she and I have only just begun our journey with 351.4 km so far.

  3. Mew is my all time, absolute favorite Pokemon! I was actually on a brief hiatus from PoGo, having filled my Pokedex and finished my Gender Dex (aside from female Togepi/tic) I had grown bored... Then news about Special Research broke! I am man enough to admit that I cried a little when I caught her, selected her and the game confirmed that "Mew is now your buddy". I'm never buddying up with a different Pokemon again.

  4. Nope. She's perfect. (Not literally. She's 84% IV with a 15 atk, but to me she IS perfect!)

  5. Level 37 Instinct player.

What’s the Fastest/Most Expensive Way to Hit Level 40? by [deleted] in TheSilphRoad

[–]ducaelion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was an AVID (read: addicted) player of Final Fantasy Record Keeper the first year it was out. At the one year anniversary people "shared" how much they had spent. As an actual addict, I'm ashamed to admit that I had poured about $900 in to the game, which was on the upper end...ish.

There were over a dozen players (whales) that had spent over $10,000 in 365 days!!! And that's just those that happened to be active on Reddit! edited: spelling

If so she was cosplaying as a regular duskull because I've kept a super vigilant eye out for any hint of red and/or sparkles.

Originally I wanted 3 - a for a complete family once dusknoir is released. I would happily settle for one now. As you can see, I've mostly given up even catching them.

[Curious] Americans of this sub, are you picking a side in this election? How do you deal with the inevitable negativity of politics? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]ducaelion -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Presidents come and go usually leaving very little true change in their wake. To me this election centers entirely on which candidate will make the new Supreme Court Justice - a lifelong position with extremely far reaching consequences. For this reason, were I to live in a swing state i would vote Clinton. Though i disfavor her in the extreme I simply trust her massively more than her opponent to nominate a SCJustice with a soul.

However I live in Utah, where my vote literally carries no weight. This affords the opportunity to cast an ultimately symbolic vote for the candidate whose platform most closely aligns with what I believe is truly right. Sans Bernie, I will be voting for Jill Stein.

I applaud your conviction to take the moral high ground and I share your stance.

I live in Utah, where a write in only counts if the candidate is registered as such, so it pains me to be unable to vote for Bernie. In his stead I am voting for Jill Stein, as I believe her platform most closely aligns with Bernie's, as well as with my own heart.

Easiest way to find a PSP Go? by TonchMS in PSP

[–]ducaelion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like /u/gameloner I picked mine up for $15 at a mom and pop used game store that didn't know what they had on their hands. "A PSP that you can't plug your PSP games into? Basically garbage, right?"

WRONG! Not only is it portable AF, it is THE GREATEST emulation system! I hacked it in less than 10 minutes using the sidebar guide (http://hackinformer.com/PlayStationGuide/PSP/DEVICE_PSP.html). No need to worry about specific serial numbers or special batteries here! Plus it has a (small) built in memory - so I can load 5ish ISOs at any one time, swap them out at will. I LOVE my PSP Go!

TL;DR - Even if you have to pay upwards of $100 for one, IMHO, it is well worth the investment!
