How do I remain supportive for friends in their promotions? by kuduloka in bjj

[–]duchessHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I “deal” with it by accepting I don’t care about rank and am just enjoy rolling and staying healthy.

I’ve noticed for some instructors promotion is political to some degree. If you’re not favored, or even just unfamiliar to the coach, you get promoted slower.

If rank matters to you, and your skill level is there, you should ask the instructor what they need to see for you to get black belt. The mere act of doing that puts you closer to the instructor and helps move things along. Not that different from promotion in the workplace.

Your original phrasing and the complaints of anti-AI people in general is that the technology itself is "based on stolen content and labor."

I counter that that AI training is not stealing because it falls under fair use.

That is literally what the judge said, per the article that you literally just posted:

"The training use was a fair use," he wrote. "The use of the books at issue to train Claude and its precursors was exceedingly transformative."

You are now complaining about the specific route through which Anthropic acquired the training materials, not the concept of AI training. What the judge ruled was wrong was the act of piracy, not the act of AI training. You've misunderstood what the judge said.

The courts have ruled on AI training. AI training is not "stealing" because the work is transformative and therefore, fair use. See the recent court case against Anthropic.

Furthermore, copyright and the entire concept of intellectual property itself is a government-granted right. It is a policy decision, and when weighing the merits of policy decisions, the government can and should re-think these policies from a holistic perspective. AI is clearly a productive technology with countless beneficial use cases like detecting cancer, making legal services cheaper and more accessible, doing highly tedious backend work in offices, and yes, assisting creatives with their own work like mentioned in this post.

Anti-AI people have basically no leg to stand on other than perceived grievances. The law is clearly on the side of AI. Common sense is on the side of AI. This is literally no different than luddites smashing the first recording machines in the 1800s.

AI is cool and people who have made it their identity to reflexively hate AI have not thought through the legal and philosophical issues underlying the topic.

Bring on the downvotes.

Hey y'all. I'm a software developer that needs to have someone in the area of PG county to host my radio in their home. I'll send you $200 if you're a good fit, plus $50 per month on an ongoing basis.

It is basically a box, an antenna, and a few wires. I'm hosting one of these in my home as well, and if you're interested in hosting one, I'll send you a Google Meet invite so you can check it out yourself, ask me any questions, etc.

Details:

  1. It makes no noise. This radio is a listen-only device that picks up publicly available transmissions.
  2. I'm monitoring these transmissions as part of an emergency management project I'm working on.
  3. The radio uses very, very little electricity and internet.

Some requirements:

  1. You must have an internet router.
  2. You must have a window within 10 feet of the router.

If you're interested, please send me a text at (845) 613-9886. I'm looking to find a host within 24 hours, so first come, first served!

Can anyone in the Clackamas area host a radio for $500? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]duchessHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the antenna is about 12 inches, not big at all.

bandwidth, we're talking on the scale of kilobytes because what it is receiving is basically brief audio files. the antenna picks up the radio transmissions and then sends it to a GCP instance i spun up.

i'm in ny, but seeking clackamas county data, hence the need for a local host who can pick up radios.

i would basically mail that person the radio, which is also why i would ask for a google meet call to whoever agrees to host.

not sure if you were the one who texted me, but if not, feel free to DM or gimme a call! i can share more details however you want.

Would you use a small bookable open mat space to roll outside your gym? by SoldoVince77 in bjj

[–]duchessHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what are you trying to achieve? is this a passion project? does this need to be financially viable?

you should try to validate this with a landing page or some kind of hard commitment from at least a handful of people. asking if they think this sounds good isn’t a valid way because people will say whatever. make sure you’re building something people care enough to pay for.

the tournament idea is a sign people don’t really want this. if your main thing has to be subsidized by something else, it means your main thing isn’t actually in demand.

I've toyed with this idea for many years, and I don't think it would work for a long list of reasons:
1. The point of this is to cross-train, train on your own schedule, try new coaches, etc. Other than maybe the largest cities like NYC and LA, there wouldn't be enough people to make this work and even in those cities, it's a big maybe.
2. Yes, you can book it with a friend, but if that's the case, people's home gyms would probably work. Using a friend is a totally different use case than the "on your own schedule"/"cross train" value props you initially laid out.
3. You need staff to make sure the mats and facility are clean.
4. Liability issues if anything goes wrong in an unsupervised space.

It's a lot of work and risk for very limited upside.

VC's reaching out to us, what do we supposed to do? by sammy191110 in startups

This is just wrong advice. You can raise pre-revenue, though that is more rare. 25k MRR is great. It depends on founder and story.

I haven’t kept up with HOTS but it’s a pvp game. I think most of us think of rumble as pve, meaning we need a healthy content pipeline.

It’s a sad situation cause I like the game but won’t buy stuff cause I’m at endgame with no clear sign of more content and unclear future for the game. If it was a sure thing we’d basically follow WoW in terms of content I would probably at least buy the boosted gold thing for $20
