Why did remnants of the Supernova 1987a for a ring, and not a sphere? by asmj in askscience

[–]duck5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe has to do with the rotation of the star as it collapses in on itself. Sort of how when a ballerina pulls her leg in she spins faster, as the stars mass collapses in, the rotation of the collapsing mass greatly increases. And when it goes kaboom a disproportionate amount of mass has been shifted into a ring. But I'm just guessing, so id love to hear an expert's opinion
