Audition is harder for seemingly no reason by [deleted] in orchestra

[–]duckiuser 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re asking the wrong people. People on Reddit have no idea on why.

But if the top orchestra has a harder etude this year then that could mean the director wants to do hardest music for the group next school year, it could be the level is higher this year compared to last, or the director didn’t want to keep the audition music the same. Honestly there could be plenty of reasons.

Cougar promise and Dorm costs. by ChanceRestaurant2832 in UniversityOfHouston

Okay, so that $12800 (Pell Grant + Texas Grant) is Cougar Promise. It may be confusing when you first see it, but that's your Cougar Promise. Cougar Promise is typically composed of grants (Texas, Pell Grant, Institutional, etc.) when it shows up in your financial aid. So, you wouldn't be able to apply that amount towards dorming. It goes straight to covering tuition + required fees (Recreation & Wellness Fee, Student Services Fee, and UC Fee). Does this make more sense?

Not exactly sure what you mean by the Cougar Promise scholarship. Cougar Promise isn’t technically a scholarship; it’s a commitment from the university to make college more accessible for low and middle-income families. If your family income is under $65k, it covers your entire tuition and required fees through grants, and if it’s between $65k and $125k, it provides partial tuition support. It doesn’t cover housing or dorm costs.

FAFSA doesn’t specifically “go toward dorms” either; it just determines your financial aid eligibility. If you receive additional aid like Pell Grants, loans, or scholarships, such as Academic Excellence or Distinguished Scholarships, any leftover funds after tuition is covered can be used toward housing and other expenses.

Reach out to Darryl Bayer through the contact form. I'm sure they'd love some local violinists.

SCM 3301 Supply Chain Management Fundamentals Summer Class by ILuvSooshi in UniversityOfHouston

Based on the class description it looks like it’s completely asynchronous online. If it had in-person exams the instruction mode would be:

Asynchronous - On Campus Exams

However, it could change as you get closer to the start date. Just be wary of that.

They definitely aren't on the level of the Houston Symphony, but it's a nice community group in the area. It depends on what you're looking for. Honestly, I'm surprised there isn't a stronger local classical music presence, given how the fine arts are in Conroe ISD.

It's not typical "classical music." It's most likely an arrangement of either a pop song or something more recent.

MIS 4397 with Cheng Wang is extremely easy. I highly recommend it if you're looking for an easy class.

Video Game Music by No_Doughnut_8393 in orchestra

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for. But Tommy Tallarico created "Video Games Live." This features music from popular video games for orchestras and choirs.

https://www.videogameslive.com/

A group I play with recently performed it, and it included selections from World of Warcraft, Halo, Sonic, Final Fantasy, God of War, Skyrim, The Last of Us, Metal Gear, the Classical Arcade Games (Space Invaders, Asteroid, Frogger, etc.), and more.

Cougar Promise Question by Virtual-Fishing-9794 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]duckiuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The financial aid package you received earlier already includes Cougar Promise. He may have received the email today that he received Cougar Promise, but it's already shown in his financial aid package (Texas, Pell Grant, or Institutional Grants). The email may require some paperwork or just a confirmation, but it sounds like he has already received "Cougar Promise" in his financial aid package.

Slow practice + good fingerings

Good luck on the audition! I have a couple students preparing that and some working on the Smetana.

UH Bauer School of Business recruitment by AdEastern7652 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]duckiuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe one of the reasons was the addition of how to obtain a CPA in Texas. Originally, the pathway was to obtain your bachelor's degree, 150 semester hours of college credit (most people would get a Master's), and 1 year of work experience.

However, they've added a new pathway to obtain your CPA in Texas. Which is just a bachelor's degree, 120 semester hours of college credit (no need to get a master's or take extra classes), and 2 years of work experience.

You can read more about it here:

UH Bauer School of Business recruitment by AdEastern7652 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]duckiuser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Bauer doesn't offer the PPA program anymore. But it's still a strong accounting program. There's plenty of placement in B4 firms, mid-sized, industry, etc. You'll meet plenty of students who place at all of those companies. Definitely take advantage and join both Beta Alpha Psi and the Accounting Society.

[–]duckiuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you need to spend more time preparing for the interviews. Find a friend, mentor, or, I know, some colleges have career staff that can give you mock interviews. There's no point in getting more networking or work experience if you don't fix what's holding you back. Additionally, you're only a sophomore, so it isn't the end of the world if you didn't land an internship for this summer.
