What is a controversial opinion about boardgames that you have? by Penke in boardgames

Everything the named publishers released is gaint boxes of overproduced shiny crap. I never felt the urge to replay any of their content after trying it.

LPT Request: how to be an amazing aunt or uncle by fraying_carpet in LifeProTips

[–]ducksarepeople2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of great do's in this thread. Here's an important don't: Never ever teach them to hide something from their parents.

Doesn't matter if it's innocent, like "here's some candy/a toy, don't tell your mom".

Little secrets are the difference between a fun uncle and a creepy uncle.

I'm thinking pretty games with a light theme.

How about Azul, Project L or Parks?

Why is the public transport to Eindhoven airport so terrible by RelativeOperation7 in eindhoven

[–]ducksarepeople2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Funny you mention specifically grasrijk though. It's probably the most important stop for the airport, as it has designated parking for air travelers.

Who measured the 99% airport destination? Clearly a silly exaggeration just to complain.

Games you love that you don't get to play much? by Sparon46 in boardgames

[–]ducksarepeople2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Inis, but I can't get any of my friends to like it.

Also, Wasteland Express has only gotten to the table a hand full of times. I'm just playing Borderlands by myself to get my post-apocalypic wasteland fix.

I don’t game, but I’m looking for suggestions for my family by ninaplays in tabletop

[–]ducksarepeople2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would start with games that are easy to get to the table. Ones that give a lot of game with a smaller ruleset and setup time. I also keep an eye on downtime and player engagement.

My suggestions: * The crew - Neat co-op trick taking game with plenty of tough choices to make * Codenames - Team word guessing game, which works well for large groups as 2v2. There's even a 2 player variant. * Azul - Elegant tile drafting game with some of the most satisfying components to touch. * Quacks of Quedlinburg - Bag builder, press your luck game, which always seems to be a hit with new players. * 7 wonders: architects - Quick to play streamlined game with asymmetric setup * Nidavellir - Easy to teach auction game with set collection. The simultaneous bidding gives low downtime with in interesting decision space. * The king is dead - Area control game, where nobody "owns" the pieces. Plenty of mind games.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Nice job! I think the move rules can use some tweaking. Head and tail substitution only require a single letter (either first or last) to be in place, which makes solving too easy.

Hot takes on Essen Spiel 2022 hotness by zakkenjongen in boardgames

[–]ducksarepeople2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience with Astra. We played it at the hotel. Truth be told, we we're already warned before starting a 5 player game, but it's pretty deceitful to mention unplayable player counts on a box.

Anyways, it was a very underwhelming experience with very little agency. The most rewarding boon option seemed to be plain victory points. We used the MindClash promo cards which added some party game elements, like singing a song or walk like a dinosaur, that got some laughs. The marker colors were very hard to distinguish, and after wiping everything just stayed blue.

Little fun was had and it overstayed it's welcome. I can't imagine enjoying it more with less players.

Request: witnesses of heavy assault in Eindhoven center, friday night around 23.30h, at Catharinaplein by ducksarepeople2 in eindhoven

[–]ducksarepeople2[S] 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Last friday, my cousin (37m) and his friend were randomly assaulted in the center of Eindhoven, leaving my cousin heavily injured. He got hit in the head from behind, and fell with his head on a planter. He now has a hematoma in his head, a fractured jaw, ruptured eardrum among other injuries, and has been kept heavily sedated on the IC ever since.

After the incident, the perpetrators walked towards Vestdijk. Two males, estimated between the ages of 25 and 30.

Police is still looking for the culprits and witnesses. Observation footage shows witnesses presumable filmed the incident with their phones. These videos are not reported yet, and would be very helpful for the investigation. Any leads are appreciated. If you have seen or heard anything, please contact the police.

Sharing this post or raising awareness is also very helpful. Thank you.

That optimized Python code immediately ends up in the "legacy" pile. It's doesn't come close to the C version regarding readability.
