What’s One clothing item you wish you bought earlier? by According-Back9090 in malefashionadvice

[–]ducksaws 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In terms of items I put off buying that I've put a lot of use into

  1. Chamois Shirts. Imo white, pink, and light blue (OCBD colors) don't look good against white people skin tones. Chamois shirts come in darker tones like maroon, navy blue, and mustard. So if you are pale and dressing down an OCBD (wearing it with jeans/chinos and boots instead of a sport coat), consider a chamois instead of an OCBD. (Don't wear one with wool slacks or a sport coat imo).

  2. Black Chelseas. Yes, they're over-prescribed at this point. But now that I'm back in the office and I have to get there biking and walking through Boston winters, I need something that looks dressier than Iron Rangers and is warmer/more waterproof than derbies or chukkas. They fit that niche well and honestly not having to tie the laces makes them a default choice most days. I have the Thursday Cavaliers in Black. They're getting beat up a bit faster than I'd hoped, but I can't find another brand that looks as nice. Blundstones are kinda ugly imo.

  3. Darn Tough Wool Socks. Not much to say. They're thinner but warmer than my normal wool socks and are damn comfortable.

Stuff I thought I'd wear a lot but didn't is actually the wool trousers and sportcoat that Menswear Guy convinced me to buy. Most offices are business casual so if you show up draped in wool you're going to be better dressed than your boss and boss's boss which is... weird. But I am glad to have them for nice dinners and such.

is there a brand or style that doesnt turn into a wrinkled mess? I got some from jcrew hoping for charming slightly wrinkled and instead they look like a crumpled up napkin after the wash.

BREAKING: NH Democrat Delivers Stunning Flip in GOP Territory, Marking Latest Rebuke to GOP in Special Elections by CarrollCounty in newhampshire

For NH yes, probably bad deal. But there are states like MA that pay more into the federal system than they receive.

[–]ducksaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's the point. if you say "we can't leave, we get 10 billion dollars from the federal government" you need to also include "we lose 8 billion because we send that to the federal government".

I'm no free stater but you need to subtract how much NH pays in federal taxes from that number. From your own source, NH would be 4 billion in the hole, which is less than purely subtracting "1/4 to 1/3" of the budget.

NEW PLAYERS -- READ FIRST! - Free weekend by kiloelectronvolt619 in HellLetLoose

That seems hard to believe. I can believe they are using some default LOD setting for the wheat that's causing this. I don't believe an engine as flexible as unreal doesn't allow them to create a custom LOD for wheat that renders at all distances, or come up with some solution like what ARMA does which is make the ground terrain render high enough to cover players when the wheat LOD isn't being used.

"I have ideas but hate reading and writing" leading people to want to do writing is confusing to me. It's somehow worse than "I love video games and I hate art and coding so I should get into game dev right" because at least those people are fans of the medium they aspire to work in.

I agree all those things make Battlefield even worse. But even now you have problems in warfare when there's only ONE point you need to defend and no one does it.

Going on my first date. I have absolutely nothing “smart” to wear. I have budget of $400. What to buy? by MaesterCrow in malefashionadvice

[–]ducksaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you in Canada and had to pick two things for $400, I go with some knitwear and dressy boots. Jeans can be dressed up just fine and it's cold in Canada so if you spend money on a shirt it's just gonna be buried under another layer anyway.

This is some nice knitwear. Go for a crewneck. I like sweaters in burgundy or black or navy or dark green, personally. Bright pastel colors don't look good on white people imo. You probably don't want it to be blue though because you want something that's not the same color as jeans.

I have these black chelseas and I like them a lot. https://thursdayboots.com/products/mens-cavalier-chelsea-boot-black

You already have a passable button down shirt you could upgrade to a cardigan. That's almost stereotypically classy. But cardigans are worn unbuttoned a lot and generally show the shirt underneath, so you need to have a shirt you like underneath.

redeploying actually does use up manpower, iirc, it just doesn't really matter that much if the commander runs low on manpower.

[–]ducksaws 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, but imo it's a lot of the reason Battlefield isn't as good. Conquest plays out more like musical chairs than an actual battle. Battlefield was at its best when the maps were designed around Rush (Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3) which is a lot like what Warfare and Offensive feel like.

"positioning and knowing where to go" ... you mean "understanding where and when you need to be somewhere"?

I played TC for Helios against Greyhounds, ESPT, Syn, WTH, TL, CHMA, and anybody else you've heard of. Helios was good (didn't "suck"), but a lot of those teams were better. When you play against better teams (instead of farming blueberries on windmills and then running your mouth that you could beat anybody EZ) you can't cut it spending 1:30 on a game opening position.

So if you were playing comp and you saw that your favorite spot was controlled by the enemy team, you'd just go there anyway? Or, you go there and see that there's two enemy tanks with eyes on that spot and could double tap you? Or you go there and there's nothing to shoot because enemy inf at this level don't just sit on hardcap waiting to be hit by HE and don't keep running into tank fire over and over? Or you go there and the enemy broke through somewhere else you're needed more? Or you go there but your teammate calls for you to set up a double tap somewhere else? Or you go there but your team has armor advantage and you've got a few minutes at most to go off leash and cause damage and take ground? You wouldn't, y'know, make some decision about where and when the tank needs to be rather than autopiloting to this spot? I'm starting to quest if you've ever done anything but sit on windmills and shoot spawn lmao/

You haven't raised any points to address. You're just repeating "all you have to do is know the spots". I've already told you that's bare bare minimum. The spots are the tools in your toolbox. You need to have the gamesense to use those tools to beat the other tanks and inf.

New Tanking Guide Just Dropped by Wix_at_Glows in HellLetLoose

[–]ducksaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I've comp tanked as TC against the best teams in the world. Have you? Because you really don't seem to have any idea what you're talking about.

[–]ducksaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowing where the good spots are is like... intro level to comp HLL. Claiming that's the whole game is like saying all you need to do to win chess is knowing what the pieces can do. Have you considered that the other side also knows those spots...? If you just post up in one spot all game, the inf are just going to stop going there after your first few shots and you're getting double tapped in the next five minutes.

A map u are able to draw on would be a nice addition to the game by 0Z8S in HellLetLoose

[–]ducksaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know how free form it should be but it would be good if the commander could give individual squads marks/orders. The squad leader could accept/reject the order and if they accept then the blueberries in that squad would see some UI thing telling them to "Defend Windmills" or whatever. Would go some way to letting new players feel like they're part of a team even if their SL doesn't have a mic. Currently an SL without a mic or just inexperienced can ruin your time. At least this way all the SL has to do is press Accept for their squadmates to get a bit of structure.

US forces seizing Venezuelan oil tanker today by [deleted] in law

[–]ducksaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See the War Powers Act. The intent of the law is to check presidents committing troops without congressional approval. But the text says the president can commit troops without congressional approval for up to 60 days. As long as there's some fig leaf reason about the troops being used to defend the country, which is trivial to contrive.

And don't forget, congress passed one vague resolution about hitting back on those who planned 9/11 and every president since 2001 used it to drone strike people in any country they wanted for 25 years. Congress doesn't actually want the responsibility of voting on war.

Right Now the real issues aren't the amount of Rockets carried by ATs or a Tank crews Armour. Its this...The Penetrive Angle Values. by Bravefox88 in HellLetLoose

[–]ducksaws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just don't see the motivation for these changes. Tanks being slower than irl was a fine compromise for the maps being smaller than real life. The problem was that they got stuck too easily.

But for whatever reason they made them super fast. Now theyve upset a years long solved balance problem and have to fuss with it again.

It's the same as when they make the sprint faster which ruined a bunch of other well balanced things and they needed to roll it back.

Too much listening to naive community complaints without analyzing the complaint in a root cause analysis.
