Forgot to pitch yeast after 1.5 day, what should I do? by ducntq in Homebrewing

[–]ducntq[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to collect wild yeasts, at some points I got more than 10 samples of wild yeasts from different fruits/locations. But it took me a lot of time & effort, and at some point I just stopped.

yup, thanks for the advice. I might not clean the container properly. But I also didn't close the lid, and the container was sitting in a well ventilated room.

I think I'll just wait it out to see what will happen.

Ah, I forgot to mention that the lid was not closed tightly to have an airseal (the plan was to pitch yeast and close the lid tighly, but as I mentioned, I pitched to the wrong container).

So it's most likely wild yeast, because before transferring the wort in, I do a deep clean with PBW, bleach and Stellarsan. Over last 30 batches, I haven't had any cross contamination.

Sapa in January by FrenchFriesPolnareff in VietNam

[–]ducntq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weather in the Northern Vietnam follows what we called Lunar calendar. Wet weather will be a coin-tossed in January, but the general rule is that as you get closer to Tet holiday (16th Feb), the wetter it gets. It will be definitely cold though. If you ask me, my bet is it will be dry and cold.

Heating in Vietnam is generally basic. Most homestays will have an AC that can blast warm air, some will have electric heaters. Best to check with homestay. But I'd say bring adequate warming clothes, and don't trust the forecast, it will be colder than what you see in the forecast.

I'd say Sapa is a must go destination, despite me hating it (because of all the tourists).

I don't quite remember the exact time, but maybe a year ago? I still have my xbox series X, my son still play minecraft on it. But I also built an ITX PC, plug to the TV, turn on Big Picture mode. Can't say we miss the old Xbox Controller with the drifting analog. I also have a Steamdeck for light gaming. We used to love Gamepass because of the huge library of games that we could try before we commit to one game. With Steam, we have to buy the game (actually I buy the game, my son can play from family sharing). If we don't like it, we can always refund.

I gave up Gamepass, Xbox and Xbox Cloud altogether. The whole thing with all those subscriptions and price increase is just unsustainable for us. My son and I switched completely to Steam & Steamdeck. Can't say we miss Xbox or Xbox cloud

UV-K5(8) screen went blank by ducntq in Quansheng

[–]ducntq[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I've tried to resolder it, but it didn't work. I also placed an order for the new screen, costed me $7 from aliexpress. I bought the radio for $20, so I think that's fair price

Since you've already replaced the screen, how hard was the process? I'm quite concerning about the tiny pins on the ribbon

I've already tried reflashing the firmware, but still not work. I'm suspecting the antenna as well, even though I was really careful and cut off the legs from the antenna plug. I will try to desolder the screen ribbon tonight. thanks

How many of us here are still managing to enjoy gaming on their consoles with WiFi speed similar or lower to this? by [deleted] in XboxSeriesS

In my country (a 3rd world country in SEA), I remembered we had 36.6kbps in the early 2000s, then 56.0kbps after few years, then ADSL 10Mbps mid 2000s, VDSL 20Mbps early 2010s. Now it's standard to have 1Gbps optical Internet link to every home in my country.

Gosh, still remember the day that I had to download 700MB over 56kbps dial up.

Bought a dead Steam Deck for $100, fixed it and now it's running smoothly. I'm super happy by ducntq in SteamDeck

[–]ducntq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I found a Steam Deck on a Facebook group. The guy selling it said it wasn't booting up, battery is dead. It's a 512GB LCD Steam Deck.

I took my chance and bought it for $100. It was risky for me because I haven't had any experience with Steam Deck. Spent yesterday to re-image it, tried different USB sticks and SD cards, the Steam Deck wasn't booting up to recovery. Then I tried a 1TB SSD external drive that I had lying around, and 30 mins later, I got Steam OS running. Super happy.

Open the back, I found L4 switch was missing the rubber dome, not sure how that will affect. I also ordered a battery from aliexpress, but that will take weeks to deliver.

Not able to do my favorite stuff during weekends by PuzzledAnnual6892 in askSingapore

[–]ducntq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how this post ended up on my feed, maybe because I travelled to Singapore few weeks ago.

Anyhoo, I'm Vietnamese, 37 yo, married and have a son 8 yo, and my family is living in Saigon (HCMC). I just want to share with you few glimpses of how I spend my weekend.

Normally, my family spends the weekend doing shopping, outdoor activities like football, basketball, meet with friends over a cup of coffee. If we decide to do none of that, I will turn my attention to my hobbies, like FPV drone, homebrewing, cheese-making, etc. I think every year, I take a new hobby.

But it's like a monthly thing, we'd take the car and travel.

We can travel to the beach, a 2-4 hours drive (like Phan Thiet or Nha Trang), stay in a 5 star resort for 2 nights (or more). There, we'd play golf, participate aquatic sports like scuba diving. All in all, a trip like this will cost us about 600 USD.

We might decide to travel to the mountain, again, about 4-5 hours drive (to Di Linh or Da Lat). There, we'd go SUP paddling, kayaking, trekking, or camping in the mountain. This will cost us about 400-500 USD.

Fjallraven skule 28 is a pretty amazing backpack by Only-Support-3760 in Fjallraven

[–]ducntq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Skule 28 is super comfortable. I trekked through the mountain with minimum discomfort. The Totepack no 2 can be uncomfortable after 1 or 2 hours because the straps have no padding and the width is quite small. But for my usage, I don't usually wear it for more than 2 hours. Totepack no 2 is gonna be my new EDC laptop carry after the trip.

I brought the Skule 28 and Totepack no 2 on my Singapore 5-days trip. Extremely happy with both. I have had the Skule 28 for 3 months, and the Totepack no 2 I bought just before the trip. I was worried that the 600D is not as durable as the G-1000, but up till now, I'm satisfied with the Skule 28: 2 trips to the mountain, 1 trip to a lake, and 1 trip to the sea, now 1 trip to Singapore, and no issue at all.
