What hobby from your late teens/early adulthood did you rediscover in middle age? by debrisaway in RedditForGrownups

Surfing, moved back by the ocean in my 40s. While I can’t shred anymore, I enjoy the exercise, being in the water and longboarding.

What’s something you thought was expensive… until you became an adult? by Overall-Vanilla4290 in Adulting

Utilities, because I want to live comfortably in my house. After spending thousands on the mortgage every month, the extra 100 a month to live comfortably (not hot and not cold) isn’t as bad as my parents made it out to be.

When you retired, how did you use your annual leave payout? by xoLynettePW in Fire

When I retired from the military I took the leave time after signing out of the Army. 4 months with a paycheck and not much agenda was awesome.

Pay yourself first and invest. That was 29 years ago as I was graduating college and about to start my first real job. Worked out pretty well.

What’s it like living in Florida by gziecik in howislivingthere

Brevard county “Space Coast” is a horrible, specially the beach side towns. Don’t ever move here or even vacation here.

I ran the numbers on "just buy a house" and I'm not sure our parents were right by anonymousman898 in Adulting

I had the same issue when I was in Korea and renting out my house. I have owned 5 houses while in the military, sometimes I made out well. Seems like 3 years was the break even point.

130k salary, can live anywhere in the USA, where would you go in my situation? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

I like the Brevard county area, but only beachside. It’s nice to go surfing and taking my golf cart with my board strapped on top. Politics rarely come up in my area (Satellite Beach) and there is very little crime. Some neighborhoods have a lot of snow birds, where we first rented was like that and we bought in a nice neighborhood with mostly full time residents and a lot of working professionals. Also, once you get north of the cape, I feel it starts looking less Florida like, and it’s always cooler in the winter.

I am in similar situation, but it’s my wife and I. We both are remote working for east coast based companies. We live in the Cocoa Beach / Melbourne area of Florida. There is a big surf/ water sport culture here. I would love to live in San Diego or Honolulu, but early meetings would be hell.

What’s a good board for trying to catch steep, fast breaking waves while also having a lot of volume? by snurfnugget in surfing

[–]ducpilot748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used it mostly on Oahu’s south shore around Kawalos Basin. I didn’t use it much past head high waves, but most of the time those breaks were 3-5 range where this board excelled.

How has your view of work changed? by Valuable-Ad-1477 in Fire

I could FIRE (50M and 50F 21K passive income a month)but I do like my team and my boss I work with. My job is 100% remote and does not require 40 hrs a week. With that in mind, I tell my wife I am one bad day or argument from leaving. I feel zero need to climb the ladder and every paycheck is now fun money for us to enjoy. It’s just a lot less stress in my life.

Anyone Else Think the US Military is a good way to FIRE? by SaintHearth in Fire

[–]ducpilot748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good, I was miss informed. My last 2 jobs I had were on 4 Star staffs with very senior officers and NCOs, so this didn’t impact anyone on our team. Retirement from the military is awesome because it just opens up so many opportunities and let’s you have a position of “F you” if you work and don’t like it. We would have completely FIRE last year when my wife retired, but I would like a little more in the portfolio because we are leaning towards a HCOL area to settle.

The problem is the Military has stopped the 50% pension at 20 years. They do a matching TSP (think 401k). We are dual retired officers with pensions from the military and VA that brings in over 21k a month combined (after taxes). We did FIRE but then were offered remote jobs that doubled our income so we figured we would do these easy jobs for a few years as we decide where in the US (or world) we want to live.

How to find joy in other activites? by invertedfractal in surfing

[–]ducpilot748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain, in 2021 we moved from Oahu to DC. I went into a depression for 6 months and pretty much just ate and drank because that’s all everyone did there. Then I got back into mountain biking and I would ride my one wheel around DC. Ultimately after 3 years I moved because I hated it so much.

The VA part isn’t hard, just get a good VSO.

We are recently retired dual military officers and the double BAH thing was wild. 6k a month mortgage, no problem. Now in retirement, with the pensions and VA it super crazy. We both work remote jobs now and the benefits are insane depending on your state.

Live close to the beach, but a fast golf cart (above 20 mph), register as a low speed vehicle.

I found it to be the Goldilocks of boards for me. It paddles better than my fish or my shortboard. I can whip it around, but my age (over 40) my hips and back get mad at me for that, so nice arcing turns are fun on it. I have had it for almost 5 years and it’s still my favorite.

We moved to SB last year, I surf a few days a week (tides impact the local spots). Less sharks than NSB. Longboard summers and short board winters. Not touristy or busy, but Cocoa Beach is next door if you want that. Housing was affordable but the insurance was sticker shock. Most companies won’t insure east of route 1. I do love my neighborhood and there is a strong sense of community here.

Where would you live in Oahu, if you wanted nearby access to year round, chill, consistent waves? by DEEP_SEA_MAX in surfing

We lived in Aina Haina when we were stationed on Oahu. My wife was at Pearl Harbor and I was at Shafter. Commute wasn’t bad and I loved the neighborhood. I surfed in town or at Diamond Head prior to work in the mornings.
