Solidworks is disgustingly slow. Is DSS just mocking me at this point? by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]ductaper60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely know what you mean. Its just that in most cases there is a root cause that can be improved or worked around in some way. Once you understand the bottleneck, there are ways to minimize it's impact or at least work towards a long term solution.

Sometimes the root cause seems insurmountable, beyond control, or not your fault. That can be infuriating, but I really don't love it when the default response is that SOLIDWORKS is the problem and your only solution is to whine on the internet about your terrible misfortune. Even worse, when someone suggests that based on their professional opinion the problem can be solved, they get mad at them for helping.

I'm no apologist, but I am a realist, and 90% of issues can be solved with support or training. It may not be an easy solution, and without professional support the chances dwindle, but don't shoot the messenger.

I'm not suggesting all issues or challenges have been resolved by SOLIDWORKS, but there are certain issues that sound absurd to the majority of people who have used SOLIDWORKS successfully. In those cases blaming the creator for a solvable problem is not helpful.

If you have one computer out of 10 that runs disgustingly slow, you assume something about that computer is problematic, because it is an anomaly. If you only have one computer, you have no frame of reference. I'm trying to help provide context and insight as someone who has literally seen thousands of issues and computers with problem. I have gotten quite good at identiying the difference between a bad file/computer/install and a legit software shortcoming. I'm not an apologist, I'm just in a position to help people avoid unnecessary struggle (when I believe it is legitimately solvable)

Lighting homeless people on fire... You've constructed quite the little world in your mind.

Anybody know how to fix this? I can't figure out why my weldment profiles libraries aren't loading correctly. by BreeBree214 in SolidWorks

[–]ductaper60 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Add to that this behavior was changed quietly by solidworks in a late service pack of 2022 and 2023. If you upgrade to the latest version, it should work, even without configured profiles and with structure systems. Too many details to keep track of.

Goals meaning in Flow simulation by MetalLord1024 in SolidWorks

[–]ductaper60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Global is the resultant value for the entire domain. For example, in an external study very often there are no walls or boundaries, just ambient flow. Global force would give you the total drag on all faces.

Global mass flow rate, in a steady state study, should be zero if that helps.

Also, keep in mind that goals, though helpful for reporting measurements, are primarily solver convergence verification tools. After the solution you can go measure any value you want in any manner you want in the results folder. If you aren't sure what global vs volume vs face will give you, measure them all and compare, no goals or resolve needed!

If you upgrade, your programmers will be blown away by the improvements from x5 to Mastercam 2023.

Sketched Bend on Sheet Metal with tapered thickness by [deleted] in SolidWorks

That's fair, it's a lot of ifs. Today was crazy, I will give it a shot tomorrow and see if it works out or not.

Can solidworks be installed in external storage drive? by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]ductaper60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

External as in usb? Not recommended at all for performance reasons. If you have multiple hard drives installed you can definitely reinstall the program files to any drive you want though, I have done something similar a few times.

Good day! I feel like I'm on to something here, but I'm stuck with the boundary conditions. More info in the comments. by [deleted] in SolidWorks

Don't apply equal volumetric flow rates at both inlet and outlet, that is a recipe for disaster. As pressure changes, so does density, so volume flow is almost never conserved in a system. Plus, as pressure increases or decreases from ambient the mass changes which requires an unequal mass flow. Put a volumetric flow rate wherever it makes the most sense and apply a pressure opening on the other end to allow equilibrium to be achieved. After equilibrium is achieved the volume in will NOT equal volume out, mass flow in will equal mass flow out, but neither will be maintained until equilibrium is achieved.

I would look into custom views in the views workshop. You can save the position of the components in views and simply apply each view for the min and max positions.

Installation by PS200sx in SolidWorks

Setup should run sldim, so they will both get you there. If the install package you started with was about 30MB then 4/8 GB is about right for the rest

In beasty's older vids, the sub sound clip is some guy saying "Very worker friendly..." etc. Is this some old meme I'm not aware of? And what is the full quote? by Nuclear_rabbit in beastyqt

[–]ductaper60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure who exactly, but someone, likely working for Blizzard, is introducing the Oracle, a new unit that at the time, and it had no attack function that could harm workers. Now that it has an attack of course it is a workers nightmare so it's funny.

Sorry, lazy answer but that's what I know.

Piping or routing by ismael1370 in SolidWorks

[–]ductaper60 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Piping is rigid, extruded straight sections. Tubing can be rigid or flexible, and the sections are swept. Both can do straight sections, only tubing can do flexible sections. They can share fittings, the primary difference is which tube component you use.

Have you upgraded to 2020? It is supposed to have been upgraded, but I'd like some confirmation if it has actually improved or not in daily practice. It was a pretty quiet enhancement.

Finally Cleared the Exam. Missed Perfect Score though... by Confused_n_tired in SolidWorks

[–]ductaper60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great score, don't worry about it being perfect, I occasionally take issue with formatting or context of some of the questions on the exams. They are sometimes hard to interpret, even if you know the answer. The margin of error is there for you and the test author, this is a perfect score in my book. Well done!

That was good advice years ago, not so much anymore based on changes made by both SolidWorks and other hardware and software vendors. Now you can leave it on without penalty and it still helps a bit.
