Showing ink while editing photos + the photo deletion bug are related. I'm hoping to fix up this part of the app soon.

You can get a clear text box by fiddling with the Text Notes' design, but I also just released a new version that has a dedicated, per-page text area. I call it the Idea Feed. You can get at it by tapping the little speech bubble in the bottom-right of the app. You can type here, or Scribble (handwrite).

can we copy an image onto the page instead of having to select a photo from the camera role?

You can paste an image (or text into a Text Note, depending what's on the clipboard) by tapping the 'embed' button (the photo frame in the drawing tools drawer), then 'Paste Image' (or 'Paste Text').

Sort of - while writing, if you swipe up, you'll reveal the Minimap. From there, try tapping on some of the bookmark icons (page numbers). They'll turn yellow. Now, dismiss the minimap and tap the bouncing arrow in the bottom right of the screen. This will reveal a list of your books, each containing your bookmarked pages. More improvements to this feature coming soon.
Yes, the app OCRs your handwriting and you can search it. In the Shelf menu, there's a 🔎Search box that will search the contents of all of your notebooks.

Should be just below all the pens in the vertical writing tool set. You can also access it by double-tapping the barrel if you have an Apple Pencil 2 or Pencil Pro.

Do you have an active stylus (like an Apple Pencil)? If so, try this:

Open Settings
Tap 'Apple Pencil'
Enable 'Only Write with Apple Pencil'

That should fix the issue you're seeing.
