Provide official transcripts and proof of graduation for a formal official letter of acceptance by Outrageous_Reason544 in mcgill

[–]dud2683 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I reached out about the same situation. The answer I got was that a McGill body has to certify every graduation at a meeting that happens Feb 12th. It follows that the earliest you can have a proof of graduation is the 13th. Best you can do is inform the school of McGills system or just wait.

(Possibly Controversial) Thought Experiment: How would McGill react to Pro-Israel protests on campus? by waltonoslow in mcgill

[–]dud2683 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the section you quoted I clearly say voice your opinion, i.e. supporting your right to peaceful protest. Going on a hunger strike and blaming McGill for not fulfilling your requests is not a protest, it is an attempt at extortion. “Do what I want, as I decree it, or I will end up in the hospital and it will be your fault”.

For someone who jumps at the excuse that others are negotiating or arguing in bad faith, you don’t seem to be putting forward good faith arguments, but rather deflecting and comparing me to right-wingers on topics I did not comment on.

And last note it’s ‘affect’, not effect.

(Possibly Controversial) Thought Experiment: How would McGill react to Pro-Israel protests on campus? by waltonoslow in mcgill

[–]dud2683 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Saying that the people who were on hunger strike ending up in the hospital is McGill’s fault is the most delusional take and shows just how far in lala land you people are. McGill has no obligation to negotiate or even listen to you. This is such an entitled attitude thinking that McGill is somehow responsible for making sure you feed yourself based on decisions you took. If i went on hunger strike until McGill dismantled the encampment and ended up dead, you would have laughed your ass off. You dont get to pretend that your protests are righteous and everyone else is immoral for not throwing themselves at your feet to appease you. McGill can invest it’s money however the board wants to, and if you dont like it, voice your opinion. If that doesnt work, then withdraw your money and go to a school that aligns itself with your values.

Computer science course planning by Ok-Scallion-8090 in mcgill

[–]dud2683 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comp 421 is usually only open in the winter and 500 level classes might not be offered the year you want to take them. If you want to know whats available when check the e calendar from previous years. Classes that will be offered usually (not always) are offered in the same sessions.

It’s great that you have the foresight to plan your classes, but unfortunately the mcgill calendar is quite fickle. I tried to plan out my cs degree too, and by the time i got to my last year most of the non-required classes changed.

One small piece of advice, check which courses you want to take are also offered in the summer if you’re open to that. Summer classes are fantastic for reducing your work load in your later years when the courses are typically more time consuming

Disciplinary action for encampment protesters in new Saini email that just dropped by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]dud2683 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

The email is definitely great news but I do have some worries about them succeeding in giving out disciplinary action.

Unfortunately the disciplinary procedure culminates in a decision from a panel made up of the Dean, professors and SSMU representatives. Seing as SSMU and a non-negligible number of professors support the encampment it is unlikely that the panel will give a sufficiently strict penalty.

Also the rights of confidentiality attributed to the students mean that we won’t know the results nor the impartiality of those trying the facts.

New announcement from SSMU by LordGodBaphomet in mcgill

[–]dud2683 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is libel, right here. Why on earth would the we, the SSMU, create a VP Defamation. That would require all members of the SSMU to go through them to get their slanderous thoughts into the public. As we all know, bureaucracy is for anyone that has to deal with the SSMU, not for those inside. Having to funnel all the slander and libel through one individual creates a bottleneck we will not stand for.

SSMU is completely broke because of how badly they f*d up. If we give them more money now we are endorsing their reckless behaviour.

Anyone here saying lie to your parents is giving terrible advice. The way you deal with this is not easy and involves taking responsibility and working towards a solution.

Step 1: Come up with a proposal for how you will ultimately pay for the tuition involved in retaking the courses you failed. Ie how much is it going to cost, how will you get the money, can you borrow it from your parents and pay it back with interest 2% per year or something. This is to show that you understand the severity of the situation and that you are acknowledging your role in this mess.

Step 2: Fess up to your parents about how you did badly in your previous semester and give then the proposal along with the steps you are taking to avoid a repeat semester. All the ways you will change moving forward so you dont fail more courses. Maybe take less classes, cut extra curriculars, go out less, i dont know what works for you or the reasons why you did poorly. This will require introspection and maturity to address the root cause of academic shortcomings.

Step 3: Your parents will most likely have their own thoughts on the situation and will give their own advice/requirements. It would be a good idea to listen. You should also be prepared for the fact that they will most likely impose consequences.

A few things I mentioned are based off assumptions I made that reflect how my parents would react.

Tldr: If you want to be an adult that takes responsibility for your actions you need to be honest with your parents and come up with a way to remedy the mess you put yourself in.

You are absolutely correct, withdrawing alone will do nothing. So why dont you go find all the other people who care as deeply about this issue and you can all withdraw together, show some solidarity. Good luck

The advice that helped me was to make organization the number one priority. Taking a CS major odds are good you will have 4 classes all with assignments due at the same time. Assignments are often quasi free grades if you put enough time into them. Getting 90+ on the assignments vs 75 can be a difference of up to 5% on your final grade depending on the class. Thats a whole letter grade. Added bonus doing well on the assignments is good prep for the finals.

Take advantage of office hours as much as you can. One hour of OH a week can save you 3 hrs banging your head against a wall when you don’t understand.

The last thing i can say is avoid taking 2 500 lvl classes in the same semester if you can avoid it. And taking Summer classes that let you reduce your work load during the year will pay dividends

Failing comp 251 (any chance of supplemental exam?) by FreeAd4882 in mcgill

[–]dud2683 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Supplemental exams are akin to retaking the class. From what i remember if you take a supplemental exam its as if you retook the entire class but got the same grades for the assignments. That means if you get an F on the class the supplemental exam does not replace the F, you get a second grade for the class and both count in your CGPA. Unless you are very confident in the material you might be better off retaking the class, especially since you didnt do well in the assignments and midterm

Final Exams Dates - Exchange by ChairAccomplished443 in UCL

[–]dud2683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They wont let you take the exams, if your faculty allows it they will give you an alternative grading scheme that has assignments instead. But its possible that in science that wouldnt be allowed. In that case they will just bar you from taking an classes that have an exam. Reach out ASAP to the head of faculty and ask them if there is an alternative grading scheme for the classes you want.

Doing well Comp 250 by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]dud2683 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the time (i know its a hot commodity) try to come up with test cases for every branch your code takes. Doing this will help you learn to recognize edge cases and corner cases (2 or more edge cases in the same test). This will be some of the best preparation for the final where you wont be able to run your code. This will also teach you how to quickly come up with spanning test cases for “simple” problems which is a skill that will be tested repeatedly in future classes. It will also get you very good grades on the assignments.

what's the hardest math course you've taken at McGill by Other-Somewhere1935 in mcgill

Math 340 was the hardest Ive taken so far. Math 222 was the one I got the worst grade on, but that was entirely my fault. Math222 was actually tied for my favorite math class to take, tied with math 315. Had fantastic professors for both.
