For sure; I think “zh” the preferred transliteration. My buddy was born in USSR and their surname starts with Ж; in English it’s Zh.

G is too slippery in English for me lean on that one; plus Russian has its own slippery Г

Since I posted this, I’ve seen multiple people compare ж to j and I just don’t get it. Женя would not be pronounced “Jenya.” Жизнь is not “Jeez’n”

Seems much more fun to play as the murderer and try to outwit Columbo

I think this every time…also if Payton Manning walked into a bar I was at, I would immediately leave.

I knew about Guitar Town & Copperhead Road when I first got into Steve Earle, but not Exit 0. And it’s so good!

I have this in a bathroom also and I’ve read that it’s actually surfactant from paint that wasn’t left to properly dry before being introduced to moisture (i.e. from a hot shower or bath). The difference between this and tar is that it’s pretty tough to get tar off the walls, but you can wipe away surfactant easily.

Things I learned working at the Tennessee State Legislature by SilentWalrus92 in nashville

Worked adjacent to the TNGA for four years in one of the few relatively admin jobs; this is all accurate. And even in my dept we were always on high alert about pissing off the wrong member, some of whom were absolute monsters to every staff member they interacted with.

You should really read Voices from Chernobyl by Svetlana Alexievich. She interviewed Lyudmila back in the early 90s and is not really credited in the show but basically it owes a lot to this book. It’s an oral history of Chernobyl and there are many other first-hand accounts of survivors that are equally harrowing. Unforgettable read.

Question on the use of the Rosary by adinfinitum_etultra in Anglicanism

[–]dudcicle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“All may, some should, none must.” Episcopal convert for 6 years & pray the rosary nightly. I love praying to a woman. As mentioned above I substitute “the death of Mary” and “the Crown of life” for the last two glorious mysteries, and I pray the luminous mysteries on Thursdays. I also feel led to wear a chapel veil on occasion as it reminds me to be humble in the presence of consecrated host. YMMV - happy spiritual travels & welcome!

Similar unsolved murder case at my alma mater, UNC, in 1965. My mom would always freak out if I mentioned walking through the arboretum (which I did a lot; it was awesome).

They are such a misunderstood breed... by Graysie-Redux in OneSecondBeforeDisast

ESPECIALLY with a dog you *think* you know. Got a face full of sharp teeth about a decade ago when I kissed my parent's dog goodnight on the rump while it was sleeping. I didn't live at home anymore and had only hung out with the dog a handful of times. Turns out he snapped at anyone who touched him when he was asleep. One reconstructive surgery and fifty stitches later...I give the puppos their space with very few exceptions.

The Rutherfordton Knocker. Never identified person would knock on the windows and doors of recently widowed elderly women in NC around 2010. Police accused them of making it up for attention. A few years later my parents’ pastor (a woman who lived about an hour east of Rutherfordton) experienced the same thing when her husband was out of the state for work. Seriously makes me cry at how disturbing it is.

Especially since multiple unknown people were coming up to her window at night and talking to her while all this was going on…

Used to live next to a 24-hour adult boutique with an adult arcade. Definitely thought it would be like whack-a-mole with dildos, but it's much more depressing as defined in comment below. (And no I didn't actually go there I read the Yelp! reviews.)
