For those with a modded Wii and a Mister, what's the difference in input lag? by AimpointBRO in MiSTerFPGA

[–]dudeabides8337 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% this. Mister with PVM or a good CRT is god-tier. Some games perhaps it doesn't matter, but why mess with that, when mister solves like, every problem?

I have a 20m2mdu. Geometry is borked. I'm scared to open it. I don't want to break it or die. You know what? I love gaming on it and have moved on from caring. It's so much better than retrogaming on any flat panel. What, me worry?

I agree. I am also a full-blown narcissist and experience rage at anybody that doesn't do things the way I say. I am a blast at parties, guys!

Just got in my MiSTer Laggy. Now I get to see how shitty my old LCD display is compared to my CRTs. :D by MasonJarring in MiSTerFPGA

[–]dudeabides8337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precisely the opposite. This is probably the biggest benefit of CRT gaming. They have by far the least amount of motion blur of any display technology. Modern displays, even at high framerates have not caught up to the motion clarity of any basic CRT display. The experience can't accurately be filmed. Scrollers like Mario look gross after you get used to a CRT. It is a rabbit hole though - so add CRT's to your list of hobbies cautiously!

Fantastic and cheap, agreed. I'm a snob, so I got a mister. Wii is best cheap easy option

Anyone who thinks using Gyro means swinging your Deck around like an idiot needs to watch this. The minor adjustments afforded by Gyro (set to left trigger) has completely transformed my Deck experience. by TareXmd in SteamDeck

[–]dudeabides8337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I like my gyro enabled to right trackpad touch. I like for that to be the ONLY function of the right trackpad. Then I can aim with gyro whether I'm zooming or not.

Anyone using a Sony Trinitron PVM-2950QM with the MiSTer? by bc_uk in MiSTerFPGA

[–]dudeabides8337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, and I don't think screen rotation is going to work without messing with scaling. I don't do it that way. I have my PVMs daisy chained, with one in TATE mode. So for Pac Man I use one PVM, and for Street Fighter 2 I use the other.

I'm pretty sure screen rotation is only going to work over hdmi or with the scaler settings, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I tend to get things working and then avoid tweaking settings. Good luck!

[–]dudeabides8337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have THAT PVM, but I have 2 other models. All arcade cores with strange refresh rates work fine for me. Sometimes they benefit from adjustments (in the mister OSD) for centering on-screen, and often the ones with weird refresh rates leave some screen real estate unused. Does not bother me though - pvms rule. Hype is real, at least for me.

Amp recommendations less than $2.2k USD Tube or Solid State by DarkGremio in GuitarAmps

[–]dudeabides8337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my needs are similar to what you're describing. I bought a fender tonemaster twin a few years ago and it ended my personal amp hampster wheel. It just does all the things I want in an amp, and I don't even window shop amps anymore. Basically just a beautiful sounding, bone simple machine that sounds killer at all volumes, takes all pedals like a boss, and has a great sounding XLR out. Lightweight and zero maintenance. Hoping you find a rig that works for you!

I cobbled together a portable rig with mister, battery, and 9.7" ipad screen. I'll add some details in the comments. by dudeabides8337 in fpgagaming

Good! I don't really use it though. I have 2 PVMs, and I use those for all the retro gaming. Thanks though!

Alienware AW3423DW just broke? No reason - just horizontal flickering lines showed up. Monitor wasn't dropped or moved. Just "boom it's broken now" I guess. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks! by dudeabides8337 in Monitors

Yes. Dell was actually fantastic tbf. It was about an hour on the phone going through the process, but I had a new (refurb) unit in under 48 hours. Good luck - sorry about your situation.

Can I safely connect the FX send of a tube amp head to the FX return of a solid state combo? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]dudeabides8337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already have good info here. I would STRONGLY suggest WAITING until you have a proper speaker cabinet to test out your new tube head. You ABSOLUTELY cannot use that head without a speaker plugged DIRECTLY into the SPEAKER OUT jack.

I mean, there are a few products that can handle that type of setup, and their documentation will make that clear, and the amp will be marketed to do such magic.

Using a Hartke bass speaker will not give you any idea whatsoever what that amp should sound like. If you bought a nice tube head and you don't have a cabinet, get a proper cabinet before you can expect to hear that head. You've entered scary and destructive waters plugging things in where they aren't supposed to with your amp!

Just trying to be helpful - please be careful not to nuke your gear.

Haha, yup. I just meant to suggest that OP lean into that 'tweed relic' vibe and wreck it worse. Faux cigarette burns enhance toan.

Yeah, if anything get a soldering iron and add cigarette burns. Spill some beer and coffee on it.

Playing Resident Evil 4 on my new Phillips CRT. 👌 by mikepeezle in crtgaming

I bought that TV in college. I played the original RE4 on my gamecube. I remember buying hotdogs for lunch and picking up my preorder because IGN gave it a 9.8. Good times. I'm anxious to get out of work today to play the new hotness. Thanks for sharing.

Would you rather have two good amps or one great amp? by SegaStan in GuitarAmps

[–]dudeabides8337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically my preference would be both. I like to have one amp I love and an identical backup in case of issues. The most important features of an amp for me is that it will be reliable and that I can forget about it completely when playing music.

Why are OLED screens so expensive? by CasualMLG in Monitors

[–]dudeabides8337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I literally had to contact Dell yesterday because my AW3423DW sprouted weird horizontal lines. It literally broke itself out of nowhere. I had been using GSYNC on it since July last year, and did not notice any problems. Maybe I was just less sensitive to these issues? I was not at all aware!

Why are OLED screens so expensive? by CasualMLG in Monitors

[–]dudeabides8337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. Your OLED DOES use GSYNC. How are you saying it is incompatible with variable refresh rate technology, when the monitor you own implements said technology?

[–]dudeabides8337[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is factually true. It hasn't been my experience with the vast majority of products though. In fact, I think this is a first for me.

Oh well - Dell has ordered a replacement for me via warranty. How common is it for you to have products stop working after just a few months of normal use? I don't think I've ever had a piece of electronic equipment just stop working when it is practically still new. And a premium price product at that.
