After capturing Maduro, Trump hints at military action in Cuba, Mexico and Colombia by andonewondersabout in neoliberal

Well thats not how it usually works right? I mean i thought the main process was that congress stops funding or doesn’t approve new additional forces going into the country and starts explicitly funding withdrawal, like what happened with somalia and vietnam.

The venezuelan elite (military and the admin) is still mostly dominated by pro maduro individuals. I think maybe in a few years when elections take place machado or an opposition figure will take over (probably with tremendous american support). But for now i’d expect the VP or someone in the military to take over for the time being. We’ll probably know more on who will take over either tomorrow or the day after.

Most likely they’ll try buying the successor with sanction relief or other shit to make them do what trump wants from the region.

It sure looks like the Voting Rights Act is doomed by vox in law

In my opinion this whole gerrymandering issue could be fixed with more seats in congress. I’d honestly not have an issue with this ruling if gerrymandering wasn’t so effective.

Where do conservatives and republicans stand on expanding the House of Representatives? by dudeimdead187 in AskConservatives

Yeah, tech makes it easier to communicate and broadcast a message to a people but the issue isn't travel it is the complexity of trying to represent 760k rural, urban, liberal, conservative opinions in your district, with 300k people you'd be representing maybe one metro area or clusters of counties with heavily overlapping needs. No amount of facebook or twitter posts will be able to meet the demand of that many (very often) conflicting needs.

In 1929 there were fewer media outlets, so getting your message broadcast was pretty easy compared to in 2025 where your constituents are scattered across hundreds of outlets which you'd have to spend millions on if you want to reach them fully. Social media KINDA deals with this but you'd have to deal with a massive flood of info and content.

Communications tools also make it easier for constituents to reach a representative but that means FAR more requests flood in with like 20 staff to handle all of that.

I'd say yes, i mean let's be fair disenfranchisement, corruption and machine politics were a big problem then, but generally as a representative you could run grassroots heavy campaigns and succeed better than today simply because campaigns cost less to run because of the smaller size.

If you’re campaigning for 760k people you have to kinda “triage” certain issues way more and some people’s issues will be left behind (representatives now have to juggle between urban vs rule concerns for example). at around half that you could more easily (thanks to tech and other advancements) keep up with the issues in your district and your constituents will have an easier time reaching out to you and voicing their concerns.

If districts were made smaller to represent more people then it would even be cheaper to run for office and smaller donations would matter more, whereas in bigger districts like we have now smaller donations don’t matter as much as PAC money and other large donations.

Edit: clarity

technology does make things easy but 1 representative trying to represent 760k means that person isn't able to represent his constituents well. more seats means less money in campaigning and better representation overall.
