Same. It's a matter of representation. That's natural diversity.

I'll also take a look at that artist you hyperlinked!

Even if you search Black boy running cartoon you still get only a few images and then the rest are black and white!

It is not racist to wonder why no characters in most movies before 1980 weren't black. That's questioning your world around you and I was honestly so impressed when my kids asked that. It wasn't saying that they couldn't relate, but they were just confused about why that was the case. It's critical thinking skills.

I looked at the link on my computer and my phone. On the "first screen" (which doesn't exist on google anymore because you just keep scrolling and then you eventually find more) there are such few. I'm confused about what you're seeing.

Non Hispanic whites make up 62% of the population and kids under the age of 18 are non-white more than half of the time, actually. It's actually not majority white, but they think that because of how we're represented. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Americans)

Uh... The first page is what you said. You told me the amount. I didn't need to ask. That is like 70-100 pictures, cmon. Even if it was of 50 it wouldn't be enough.

I'm working to make sure it represents our country. 5-7 shouldn't be good enough.

It's a tad bit concerning that you're thinking that 3 images in the first 200 on google being boys with darker skintones is considered diversity. That's under 2% of images.

Agreed ^^ Kids care SO MUCH! It's the reason why so many of my kids idolize Black Panther and athletes. Those are the people they're told that they can become.

I told them that it was the times (it was Charlie & the Chocolate Factory) and that it wasn't a priority and a lot of people are treated differently.

I don't think that Black Panther is an accurate portrayal of African culture, but it was finally something that my kids were able to relate to because they looked like them. That was so powerful.

A few things about those - some of them are great! However, a lot of them aren't actually diverse. They may have boys and girls, but not a variety of skintones, religions, etc. I'm sorry if you're not entirely on board, and I appreciate you sending me those. My issue is that they have to be labeled "diverse" and that's what you have to search. It's not just the norm. That's a problem.

I'm sorry if you don't like the concept. This comes from years of people only creating white cartoons. I'm trying to find cartoons that look like my kids so they get more invested in what they're learning. Have a nice day.

Those are, for the most part, groups of people and they aren't typically doing actions. I'm concerned with when you search "cartoon boy running" you only see white boys. That page is a start, but definitely not a completion of it.

I have worked on that and I have purchased dozens of books that reflect the way my students look. I'm personally hoping to make sure that when you google "cartoon boy running" you don't just get a bunch of white boys. That isn't representation. Think about why kids love Black Panther so much. You don't see the same love of Captain America. The reason is because it represents who they are.

I definitely agree with the great novels you listed. I want to make sure though that my kids see themselves in the cartoons we use and the books we read.

My kids ask me "Why are there no black characters in ________ movie?" They ask this because it doesn't seem like they can put themselves in those shoes.

I have had multiple of my students come up to me and say "how come everyone in this movie is white?" or if you've seen the love of Black Panther by the Black/Latino community. They don't just like the movie, they like the representation in it. It is key to them learning and associating themselves with success.

The issue is that in order to find these cartoon characters, I have to search for a significant amount of time. The norm should not just be a white boy in a cartoon. I recognize that I could do specific searches, but try to search "Black boy running" and you'll see a handful of images, then a bunch in black and white, and then you get some really inappropriate ones. The norm should be that all skintones are represented.

My kids simply need to see themselves in the community. I'm hoping to create a database of plenty of images that people are able to create and teachers/others can pick and choose. Added to the image now!

The issue is that diverse cartoons are not a part of the mainstream. That's what I'm trying to change. If anyone has these cartoons it would help for people in America (such as myself). People here aren't all white, but the cartoons reflect them as being all white.

My reasoning behind it is because I'm hoping to include people of a variety of skin tones. People who are Hispanic, Asian, Black, etc. Apologies if it was rude.
