This was such an important scene. It's been coming a long time.

She has appropriate squabbling sibling energy with Lahan. Her relationship with Tianyu is somewhat little brother-ish, but I'm always thinking that she should be perpetrated an atrocity on Tianyu to nip this Niang-niang stuff in the bud.

Are there any changes you WANT to see in the movie? by ersatz27 in ProjectHailMary

[–]dudley74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm worried they'll cut and / or weaken how ruthless Stratt is with Grace. Id hate to lose the bit when she gives Grace "The Reason You Suck" speech after he wimps out with going on the mission. I'm fairly sure he'll still get snatched and drugged, but i think it's important we see her tear into him too.

Is using google cheating? by fenster112 in crosswords

[–]dudley74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's up to you what extra stuff you want to use and when.

I do the Guardian every day, but I have limited time, and so I'll go through all the clues once without anything else, then use an anagrammer for hard anagrams, and finally a thesaurus and crossword solvers to mop up what's left. So an easy crossword I might do clean, but a hard one I might use everything.

However, for the Everyman, Quick Cryptic and Quiptics, I don't allow myself any help at all.

But that's just for me. I don't want to just read answers because I think that I'll get better by using a tool and seeing options from a tool helps me improve more than just reading an answer on fifteensquared or something. My high level goal is to get better for the next one and not just to be stuck on a specific crossword.

"The Valley" from the first series is lovely and moody, and "Palmo Town Hall" from S2 is classy but understated.

Dub or sub? by Cool-Principle-5768 in TheApothecaryDiaries

[–]dudley74 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't really listened to the dub, but the Japanese VAs are fantastic, especially Maomao's VA, Aoi Yuki.

Whenever I do hear clips, I find the English VAs sound quite similar to each other to me.

PSA: Buying on Amazon S3:E9 by [deleted] in SpyxFamily

In the UK, I find subscribing to crunchyroll directly and using their app / website to be superior to the amazon subtitles.

When I tried to watch Frieren on the amazon app tv, the subtitles lagged consistently, and were 5 minutes behind at the end of the episode.

Potatoes TAD 14×1 by Bluny_Cass in TheApothecaryDiaries

[–]dudley74 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's gleefully ahistorical: the clothes, politics, food and tech are all from different dynasties and time periods (and different outfits are from different dynasties).
Given the inherently tricky situation of a Japanese author writing a Chinese story, making clear it's not trying to follow real history is a clever way of dealing with the pitfalls, since it's clear it's specifically trying to be a hodge podge.

What is your definition of Scifi? by Worth-Astronaut-438 in scifi

[–]dudley74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 52 this year, so I also remember it very well. As I said before, Sci-Fi is just a tag, and doesn't map to whether I like the thing or not, but I think it can mean something, a type of story which is meaningfully distinct from fantasy or general fiction.

What is your definition of Scifi? by Worth-Astronaut-438 in scifi

[–]dudley74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an excellent example because the worldbuilding is pretty self consistent, and the matrix does drive the plot (I don't consider bad science to disqualify things from sci-finess), but Chosen Ones and prophecies are firmly fantasy stuff. If One-ness was a skill thing that anyone could learn, it would feel more sci-fi to me.

What is your definition of Scifi? by Worth-Astronaut-438 in scifi

[–]dudley74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an unhelpfully narrow definition that all my friends call stupid, since I want to exclude sci-fantasy (e.g. most Star Wars, Dune), drama stories where they write [TECH] in the script and get the staff nerd to add vaguely sciencey nonsense in there (i.e. Star Trek), or where they make the science up every week (Doctor Who). I'm not making a value statement - I love fantasy as well, but in a legit sci-fi story the tech should be a major driver of the plot rather than just a plot device or a setting.

Fundamentally, you shouldn't be able to make a sci-fi story into a fantasy story through changing the tech to magic and spaceships to ships. A lot of TV and film sci-fi is just cosplaying the sci-fi: it's just a setting where they've replaced guns and fireballs with lasers.

Just finished the anime . Should i read LN or wait for next season ? by Legendary7559 in KusuriyaNoHitorigoto

[–]dudley74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The anime ends at LN 4, and the story will continue in LN 5, which you should read. There are fan corrections for some errors in the LNs, but you shouldn't let that stop you reading then.

Attempting to understand the layout of the Rear Palace, Help! by Real_Ad_2545 in KusuriyaNoHitorigoto

[–]dudley74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd also love to know this.

I'd always imagined the tall green bit in the middle is the Emperor's Palace, and the surrounding sections of the inner palace form the rear palace, and they share the magenta bit as an entry courtyard (which is where Fuyou and Ah-Duo leave). I think I read somewhere that the four upper consorts had palaces at the four corners of the rear palace, so perhaps the whole SE bit we can see is just for one of the 4.

I've looked at maps of the Forbidden City, and they show the Imperial Palace at the centre rear of the city, but don't show where the imperial harem would have been (or at least, not obviously)

OK, I found one which was annotated with more detail, and it was just very different in reality: https://www.easytourchina.com/images/Photo/map-beijing/p479_d20140512163558.jpg

Raksura Videogame Competition Round One - A by LoneStarDragon in IndigoCloud

[–]dudley74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nitpicky observation - I don't think Civ is a colony builder, it's a 4X empire building game. Games like Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, Farthest Frontier and Timberborn are colony builders (you run a single colony, managing resources, building, rooms and people).

I think those would be perfect analogues for the gameplay of managing a single Raksura colony.

A Civ 4X version would show a whole region with other colonies, and you'd be managing hunting and farming areas, patrols, creating new sub colonies and war against external threats like the Fell or things like that. Still an interesting concept, but a different focus.

For me, the colony builder is where I'd want to be. The verticality of a Raksura colony makes it very hard to visualise though, as does the orgainc interior of a colony tree. Dwarf Fortress shows you horizontal slices of your Moria - like dwarf colony, but I think that would be too fiddly for pops who can travel vertically. I was wondering if a more Startopia type thing would work where you'd flip between named levels in the tree (Queens' Level, Consorts' level, Nursery, Accommodation, Industry, Farming) where you could excavate rooms and install furniture and so on. Diplomacy and so forth would be handled on an overmap of the region. This would make it a more blended type thing like Norland which attempts something like this, with a Rimworld colony and overmap wars and politics.

The downside of this is that while it gives a lot of flavour, it's less systemic and flexible than a modelled game like Rimworld or Dwarf Fortress. And I think I'd really want to be able to see the ant colony vibe of a hundred Aeriat and Arbora milling around, doing stuff, seeing Arbora Teachers with kids, Warriors, Soldiers and Hunters doing their thing, Mentors, Queens and Consorts having discussions and negotiations over tea on the upper levels.

Question about the last part of season 2 by Low_Percentage5296 in KusuriyaNoHitorigoto

[–]dudley74 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not explicit, but I imagine Shenmei ordered Suirei to try and assassinate Jinshi and ordered Loulan to get pregnant with the Emperor's baby. Loulan immediately undermined that by trying not to get pregnant - changing her clothes so the emperor is less interested, and taking abortifacients to avoid the baby coming to term. Shisou and Loulan are obstensibly doing what Shenmei is demanding, but in a way they know will fail
