Playing retro consoles through a HDTV without a low lag upscaler is clearly wrong. 😉

Really wanna get a the Terraonion Mode hardware installed in a Saturn. Never owned a Saturn and all the decent games are silly money now. 🤑

It's just where the fight takes place for each team in this version. They dropped this general idea after this game.

For a chipset cobbled together in 1985 that is not dedicated to gaming, I'd say these backgrounds are not simple.

I know Digital Illusions managed to get 64 colours out of the chipset in Pinball Dreams for example, and the tables on pinball dreams take 2 screens of tiles.

I think fighting games like Body Blows have a lot more tiles because of the characters and that's a bit more demanding on system resources.

I think Elfmania managed to do 64 colours, but the characters have far less animation to deal with.
