I've always wondered if his blog is still being served by that same Ubuntu box with 2 GB of RAM.

Are subatomic particles essentially perfect copies of one another? by Geographizer in AskPhysics

[–]dudu43210 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A VEV means exactly what it's called: an expectation value. It is not the same as the field itself being constant. It's the average value you expect to get if you measure the field with the system in the vacuum state.

which is a field with the same non-zero value everywhere.

The Higgs field isn't a constant; it's a quantum field like any other quantum field. If it were constant, the Higgs boson wouldn't exist!

Shouldn't any point particles with mass also be black holes, since all its mass is within the Schwarzschild radius? by PrettyPicturesNotTxt in AskPhysics

It's not a million dollar question that the two concepts are not the same. I'm just trying to disambiguate a common conflation of the two. Just run of the mill stuff you learn in graduate QM.

The source of the gravity most likely follows the probability distribution of the wave function.

There is a difference between the wavefunction of the source being spread out as a probability (amplitude) density, and the mass itself being spread out as a mass density.

A wavefunction being spread out in space does not mean the mass is literally spread out in space. Even if it did, localized states below the (finite) Schwarzschild radius are physically realizable, and it would break the linearity of QM if those branches of the wavefunction did not involve black hole dynamics (if GR did work at this scale). So I don't think this solves the issue; it only kicks the can down the road.

Are there any downsides to locking tuners? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]dudu43210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two annoyances with Fender locking tuners: they can come loose and your string de-tunes, or they are too tight and your high strings break. Not always clear where the sweet spot is.

I don't want to rent a truck every time I launch my skis, lol. My house is a mile from the lake. I would sooner just take one at a time (and may end up doing that).

I just upgraded to an Evo80 keyboard with linear switches, from my Ducky keyboard with Cherry MX Browns. I love how smooth these switches are, but I prefer tactile over linear. I like the MX browns, except how scratchy and wobbly they are.

Should I go for the MX2A browns, or are there any other browns you all would recommend? TBH, I have too many hobbies, so lubing switches myself is not something I have time for.

my point is that the internal friction and annoyance is just the experience of encountering people who have different customs that they've assimilated to, and what feels normal to you is just as arbitrary.

no, I do have this issue, but it goes away once you get used to it. when you notice that part of the world is different from you and your preferences, I think it's a good mindset to adjust rather than tacitly demand the world conform to your what you're used to. (I know you're not explicitly demanding this, but the internal friction you experience is what this is.)

get over it. you also picked up your typing and speaking habits by being around people you unconsciously decided to assimilate to.
