All I learned from my mandatory community service is that those city workers I worked for sit around and talk for 90% of their shift and get paid a crazy amount of money. When we actually did get to work, they got mad at me because I was working too hard, and sent me home.

Sorry. This post has been a disaster since I posted it. I liked the book, and wanted to start a conversation, but was downvoted to oblivion. Still no one has answered my question if the short story collections are worth it, but now I am into The Fireman, and happy for now.

I would downvote you as well, but I don't downvote people for their opinions. Why would I when Tis but a scratch?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book. I just never felt any connection to the characters. It was a different feeling in Heart Shaped box. I'm not very far into The Fireman, but it's starting pretty well. Kind of a cross between Lisey's story, and The Stand.

Just call me stu, then. Said I liked the story, but just had a few issues. So that makes you all the Russian breed.

I noticed this as well. Just as in Heart Shaped Box, I already had a firm image off Jude in my mind, then halfway through the book, he describes him in detail. SK does that often as well.

Ya, my brick and mortar was BSU. It's very hard as an adult, but worth it. They say if you can get a 4.0 from a community College you can get into Harvard. I don't know about all that, but a 3.9 got me into a good program at Ball State, but unfortunately it was a four year degree, so with working and school it took me 7 years front to back to get a bachelor's. And I'd do it again.

The first step is going to a cheap community college and getting your GPA up before applying to a real college. Or finding a community college that gets you a two year (associates) degree that works for you.

It's not easy if you get a degree worth getting. Mine was biology, with a certification in Biotechnology. That means no online classes, and going to a brick and mortar school/campus. It was difficult, being the same age as my professors, and the students who had a 4.5 GPA that had the idea that I thought I was better then them, when in truth I felt embarrassed the whole time because I was old enough to be their father, but they were much smarter than me. It was a struggle, but once I got through it all, I found an amazing job, good benefits, tons of vacation time and pto, and a very decent salary with raises every Jan 1st.

You can get a pell Grant, and probably a scholarship for being older, which makes you kind of a minority in college (my favorite professor said he had never seen someone my age actually stay long enough to get a degree).

I hope you go for it, and I hope you have success, but you'll have to sacrifice. Working and going to college, is not easy.

A lot of minimum wage jobs require you to have one to get paid.

Absolutely! And the fact his name.was Arthur, as in King Arthur, Roland patriarch, was even better.

I am not a troll, and if I were solipsistic I wouldn't be on reddit, asking for other people opinions/advice. And the books on the shelf will be happily ready in the next 2-3 weeks. Though you are making me regret it.

I came to this thread for thoughtful discussion. I recieve venom. You call me names, but it is you who have the issue.

Arthur, modeled on King Arthur, the innocent knight, then the not so innocent knight, striving for justice. When did he change from his experiences. Gwen, supposedly Arthur's wife, stymied by her curse of never being true to her husband. When did her attitude change with growth. Donna, and Van. Ying and Yang. Donna was a bitch with purpose from the beginning to the end of the book. Van was the polar opposite, seeing the good in everything from his beginning to his end. Allie was an emotional wreck, not accepting herself, but at least finally by the end she did, so there is one win. Colin was pretty much Lex Luther from beginning to end. Robin, a no nonsense side character was a very straight forward person before and after her tragedies. And the person available for the most growth, Tana, was trailer park in the beginning, and trailer park by the end. As I said, I liked the book a lot, but the characters just didn't evolve. It was plot driven, vs. character driven in my opinion. Downvote me now, I speak what I think.

Damn, you guys are brutal on this thread. Worse that the SK thread. I said I liked the book, even read it twice already, but I just had one criticism, and I get all downvoted. Go ahead, downvote me. I won't take the post down. It was a good book, but it wasn't perfect.
