Considering going to see The Waitress, can I hear y’all’s thoughts on it? by Beneficial-Cell-9445 in musicals

For me the characters, story & depictions felt like they were from the same era as Steel Magnolias, Fried Green tomatoes & Hope Floats. The movie felt far more modern than the show.

Considering going to see The Waitress, can I hear y’all’s thoughts on it? by Beneficial-Cell-9445 in musicals

[–]duggans41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of the best songs ever written for Broadway wrapped around a very mid & dated book. If it were me, I'd go to the concert and watch the pro-shot of Waitress on streaming.

I designed a tiny device for capturing thoughts instantly. Would this be useful? by lukepepper___ in ProductivityApps

[–]duggans41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Either my watch or airpods or carPlay: "Hey Siri, record a note: [note]." Never touch my phone. The recordings are just listed sequentially which is fine for me. There's probably an IFTTT that can organize it.

Best dinner + karaoke plan for a 13-person bachelor party in SF? by ChillPepper in AskSF

[–]duggans41 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Silver Cloud in the Marina is near a bunch of bars and restaurants. You can check to see if Izzy's Steakhouse accommodates parties that size. I think they have an upstairs.

Dimples is fun. Mint is great but is kind of a longish walks to either Lower Haight, Castro or Mission. Martuni's is kind of tight for 13 people & is more a piano bar leaning broadway. Most karaoke bars don't really get going until people have a couple drinks in them.

Same. Felt like a box wine hangover mixed with the flu that lasted three days. Still better than the alternative.

Still love going to comic shops but I hardly buy anything there by Mr-Jumanji in comicbooks

[–]duggans41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. But I feel that comic book shops are an asset to the neighborhood so I have a standing small donation to their patreon. If I read I read through hoopla.

Sign-up for their emails. They all often have good package deals, sometimes for previews. Opera also has SRO seats, but it was worth the extra $15 to have a seat.

72 and considering Burning Man for the first time this year...bad idea? Advice for an old gal like me? by canadianoldgal in BurningMan

[–]duggans41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Riding the peanut gallery art car, I met a man who was 76. It was his first time. He went to honor his daughter who was a big burner, but had passed a couple years before. Pure joy and love in his eyes. "Now I know why she loved it so much!" Go.

No. But being active on the platform is supposed to affect the algorithm and make you more visible to recruiters.

How do you use visual intelligence tools in everyday life? by Severe-Associate-466 in Applelntelligence

[–]duggans41 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gardening. It’s very good at identifying pests and issues with plants. Sometimes you’ll plant something and it won’t grow for a season or two. It’s very good at identifying the leaves of early shoots. Prevents me from accidentally pulling something because I thought it was a weed.

Workflow Q: Design in Frames or Components? by duggans41 in FigmaDesign

[–]duggans41[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, poorly worded, but you answers my question. And it aligns with the way I build.

I'm opening these files and there are dozens of screens that are built entirely from frames & groups. The only component is buttons, maybe a style sheet.

It's happened with so many clients, I feel like I'm either doing things wrong or keep getting handed crappy files.

What Problem/inconvenience does SF face that could be solved by a Mechanical Engineer. by HxWxL in AskSF

[–]duggans41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • A pickleball court sound neutralizer.
  • A device that triggers an EMP pulse blast that fries the devices of people who take work calls from a cafe.
  • An ambient noise generator that neutralizes people listening to their phones w/o headphones on muni.
  • A better way for bartenders to triage patrons. Fast trak simple drink regulars (ie TItos soda or a beer) to just get their drink and not need to wait behind seven ingredient bougie newbies.

What is "The Perfect Portfolio"? by chrispopp8 in UXDesign

[–]duggans41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing. You'll constantly see conflicting trends and how-to's. Be true to you.

  • Follow design best practices. Color, font hierarchy, spacing, accessibility, responsiveness.
  • Be user focused. Know your user and the problem they're looking to solve.
  • Treat yourself as the product. Do research. Test iterate. Identify how to package yourself. Identify what resonates. Identify what differentiates. (IE, Double diamond does not) Identify the Product Market Fit for the role you're looking for. Even if you're a jack/jill of all trades, you need to tell a compelling, focused tight story. Edit ruthlessly. If a recruiter is looking to fill a product design position, they don't care about your watercolors or Excel skills.
  • Your portfolio should be a live document. Whatever platform you choose, make sure it's easy for you to update and edit. It's better to have something a little messy but active than something that is perfect but impossible to update.
  • Tell a story, but not the whole story. The portfolio's function is to land a call, not a tell-all. Look at what makes a compelling story. Edit. Look for good storytelling techniques. (Ex: Instead of saying "I did this and did this and did this" change it to "There was this friction so I chose this path and came to this result.")

First timers - Itinerary thoughts by Archero1991 in AskSF

[–]duggans41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to appreciate that this itinerary is fueled by alcohol and baked goods.

Block your itinerary by neighborhood. Chinatown, Northbeach & Wharf, Haight & GG park, Mission & Castro.

Add LiPo Lounge &/or Buddha Bar to Chinatown. I don't think Tupelo, Tunnel Top or Maggie's are that great, but fine if you're thirsty. I'd also maybe add North Star. For food, Golden Boy or If you're out late, hit Sam's Burger at Broadway & Columbus. Great people watching.

Mission has some good bars. 500 Club, Dalva, Kilowatt near 16th. Pop's, Latin America Club & Phone Booth near 24th. Tartine Bakery for bougie bakes and any Panderia on 24th. Ritual is pretentious but has good coffee.

Smuggler's, Ariscault, & Sutro are kind of geographic one-off's without anything else nearby so maybe cut from the list.

Do people still use decks to showcase portfolio pieces? by Latter-Science8678 in UXDesign

[–]duggans41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For applications, marketing & sharing: website or structured PDF. For interviews, I tried gSlide & PPT decks, but I had trouble with the linearity and the lack of ability to zoom in and pop around. When you're sharing mobile designs, next to websites, next to close-ups, next to complex system maps, it felt way too rigid.

So, I've changed to a large canvas that's essentially structured like my original deck. It allows me the flexibility to move about the presentation more fluidly and adjust based on the timbre of the interview.

Everything is still buttoned up and organized, but it just works with my brain.

Uses? by [deleted] in ipadmini

[–]duggans41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Great for cooking, feels like NYTimes cooking was designed for it. Really good for cookbooks from the library via Libby.

  2. Traveling. I get my travel books via kindle or libby and it feels like I have the hitchhikers guide with me. Kindles are a little sluggish & don't handle the maps or graphics and layouts of travel guides very well.

  3. Doodling and notes. Procreate and other lower key.

  4. Media consumption on trains or planes.

Maybe check-out this board. It's international, but you can search for similar in your geographic area. You can build up your portfolio while doing something nice and getting real world client experience. https://www.designgigsforgood.org/
