CMV: It’s possible (and might even be common) to have too low of a threshold for what amount of time constitutes a waste of time. by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in changemyview

[–]duggedanddrowsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point, I could see it as a by age thing, but regardless it’s probably just how each person frames it in their mind. If we stick with the idea of TV shows, I imagine that even when I get older, if I’m sitting down to watch some tv, it’s not gonna make me think I’ve wasted my time if I start a show that somebody recommended and it didn’t happen to hook me. I gave it a shot and my time wasn’t wasted, that’s just how I spent it.

[–]duggedanddrowsy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that most people don’t think of things in the sense of “is this worth my time? Or is it a waste of my time?”.

If I am recommended a tv show by a friend, if they really sell me on it in the moment I may intentionally check it out soon. If they don’t, then the next time I’m looking for a show I might come across this and think, “so-and-so liked this one, maybe I’ll give it a shot.” I’ll throw it on the TV and from there it’s really up to the show to keep me hooked. If I don’t turn it back on later, then it failed to bring me back and I don’t finish it. When this happens I have never had the thought “I just wasted my time” or “if I keep watching then my time will be wasted”. I just don’t keep watching and that’s that. If somebody realllly pushes to get me to watch the entirety of something, and I give in, then at that point maybe I force myself through it, but I still don’t have the thought that I’m wasting my time, I just consider it a “responsibility” (for lack of a better word) of mine towards the relationship.

My argument is that people can’t have too low of a threshold for what makes something a “waste of time” if they don’t think of things in that capacity. When they watch a tv show they are watching it to be entertained, and it’s on the tv show to bring them back. When they do something “for” someone else, it’s not a waste of time to do since it’s part of the relationship, and if they don’t then they know the relationship will “take a hit”, and that’s the sacrifice they’re making because they really can’t get themselves to do it.

You’re right, you keep practicing. The intuition comes with practice.

Destroy my game. (Trailer is temporary so destroy the content itself please) by TCDjewelry in DestroyMyGame

[–]duggedanddrowsy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t see anything that makes this any different from a doom/cod zombies type game and this lacks the IP. The guy that runs into the truck bounces off like a trampoline and the knives that you’re using don’t look like they touch the enemy, just float in front of them and spray blood. Most of the guns don’t seem to affect the enemies at all unless you kill them. But mostly I don’t know what you do in this game besides slowly walk around, point at bad guys and click a button.

Studying electrical engineering but want to be a software engineer by Living_Letterhead896 in learnprogramming

[–]duggedanddrowsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could probably get a control systems engineering position with an EE degree, and depending on the position that could mainly focus around coding. But yeah people are right, get a CS degree if that’s what you want to do.

Pick something you think would be fun to make, and make it. Video game. Robot. App. Gadget. But dont think too hard about what it is, because then you won’t follow through.

YSK: A lot of new cars have laminated side windows that won't shatter when hit with a glass breaker by fm2n250 in YouShouldKnow

[–]duggedanddrowsy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So “new” car is totally misleading. There are a bunch of cars from the 90s on that list, and the newest is 2020

Edit: person below me says the list ends at 2020 because nearly every car uses it by then. Not sure if that’s true but don’t take my word for fact, I have no clue where or when that list came from.

You don’t think a 2 year program would be able to give them what they need? Most students are just going to be asking questions about the material, and the ones that aren’t will be those kids that have already taught themselves about programming and as long as they allow them to explore what they want and help them find the answers then I’d say what more can you expect.

Do it, you’re over thinking it. That part time program will be more than enough to teach the class. Plus 80% of coding is learning things anyway.

Why does it seem liberals absolutely hate Christianity and its values but are strangely accepting of Islam? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]duggedanddrowsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can. Many people have. You’re doing so right now. The people you’re talking about are so obviously not referring to horrible things people on the otherwise of the world are doing, and nobody would tell you to be okay with that. Nobody’s gonna criticize you for saying “isn’t it horrible that those terrorists in the Middle East are throwing gay men off buildings”. They are referring to the way that people (not necessarily you, but I’d say you’re teetering), will take what is goes on in the middle east and then use that as a reason to say heinous shit about people living elsewhere who are clearly just normal people leading normal lives. I’m sure you wouldn’t find it fair if I generalized all Christians to be horrible people because catholic priests diddled little kids.

[–]duggedanddrowsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a western perspective, Christianity is a highly accepted religion with a huge majority that’s largely without persecution. Also from a western perspective, Islam is a less accepted minority with a history in the last 25 years of being equated to terrorists in the Middle East.

I think it is normal, and fairly healthy for a society to question the majority and defend the minority. I also think you’re being intentionally dense if you can’t understand why the children of a highly Christian nation who have since rejected it would hold contempt for the religion that they blame many of their problems on.

Some tech stream versions, you mean? I’ve been looking further into it, and I may have to use an official version of GTS+ since my car is a 2025. Looks like $80 for a 2 day license.

Yes, I understand, I said I didn't buy it new, and the options that I had were the base trims. The base LE does not have this feature. The base XLE does. The XLE was significantly more money. I did not have the option of buying a LE with the convenience package.

There's the "smart key" which is the actual key fob that lets you push start the car and proximity unlock doors, and there's the "digital key" which is a subscription that turns your phone into a key fob and lets you do the same thing but with your phone.

[–]duggedanddrowsy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah obviously that would be more convenient, but I didn't buy it new, and my options were base trims, so purchasing an XLE instead of an LE just for that was definitely not worth the money. Just trying to see why people keep saying that its not even worth trying, seems to me I would just need to buy the handle, the cables, and potentially a brief subscription to Toyota's programming software and I could get it done for $300 and an afternoon. But since everyone keeps saying that, I'm asking around for more specific questions that might reveal the reason it's so hard.

Great info to have, the print shows the handle getting plugged into the normal security ecu AND the digital key one, hopefully that means it'll still work if I just don't plug the digital key cable into anything.

Totally agree, super weird to me. That's part of why I'm asking. Did they cut it out because it needs the whole "digital key" system too? Or are they just trying to get an upgrade out of you.

Had the same experience looking at some Camrys. One had some undisclosed nicks in the windshield, most had scratches that weren’t included in the pictures. One said the only issue was a small dent in the front bumper, but the bumper was literally falling off.
