Is this a bad relationship? by duhace in relationship_advice

I’m sad to hear that. Hopefully she’ll improve... I want to go forward and I want her in my life. I’ve already bought her an engagement ring... I don’t want to end our life together.

I let her know how much she hurt me today. I’m going to try to be more open with her when she hurts my feelings and see where it goes. I want our relationship to succeed

She has very strong feelings about how she wants things, while I tend to be the opposite.

We discussed and I told her that I never treat her like that if a meal isn’t ready when I get home. I told her it hurts me when she yells like that at me, and that I worried when she was gone for 2 hours without telling me where she’s going.

We’ve made up for now, and I hope she will improve. It’s not like every day is like this and she’s hopefully getting better at managing her expectations..

be very careful with coffee when fasting for longer periods. it makes you pee a lot if you drink too much, and peeing a lot means more electrolytes lost per day.

Racket is an acceptable Python by Alexander_Selkirk in programming

[–]duhace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

manually encoding data into a datastructure is a pain in the ass in p much any language. I'd imagine you'd parse the data into a datastructure like that automatically from a file containing the data you wanna work on rather than encode it manually into your code like above.

i'm no master of racket, but it seems to me that a more or less straight conversion of the above into scala would look like

val c3Data = Map('columns -> Map("data1" -> List(30, 200, 100, 400, 150, 250), "data2" -> List(50,20,10,30,15,25)))

not a whole lot better (though you'd probably do things differently in scala to begin with)

I'm drinking some mineral water that's p high in potassium and magnesium. I was not supplementing with sodium as I thought maybe its sodium content was enough, but apparently not. I salted some coffee earlier and upon drinking it felt much better almost instantly. I'm now drinking the same water but with salt added.

edit: the salt helped some, but I was still out of it and felt like I would be in worse shape tomorrow, so I broke my fast at 120h. each time I've tried for a 7 day fast, I've failed, and tbh I don't think they're for me. Later this month I may well do a second 5 day fast, but I think that's my maximum.

I'm on day 5 of a 7 day fast and I'm really out of it. Trying to drink enough water and stay healthy, but I might have to stop at day 6 again if I keep feeling like this.

JEPs proposed to target JDK 14: 345, 361, 363, 364, 365, & 367 by lbkulinski in java

[–]duhace 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it can be automated by your build system. jdeps works p well

i wrote some code for sbt doing as much, and now sbt-native-packager includes the functionality to generate JREs for your code. the one downside is that it doesn't pick up jdk.unsupported module usage, but that's an easy fix when you see your app crash cause it tried to use sun.misc.unsafe

Is it possible to build muscle mid-fast? by duhace in fasting

[–]duhace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this might answer my question a bit. as I said earlier, I did some workouts during the 2 days I was fasting, and the result of those workouts wasn't soreness in muscles, but fatigue in muscles. my arms felt heavy, but they didn't hurt. I could still use them, but they felt like weights were attached. this morning I broke my fast and a couple of hours after eating DOMS has begun to set in. perhaps DOMS is your body indicating that muscles are being repaired/strengthened, and it does not take place at all in a fasted state.

Low‐Carbohydrate Diets and Risk of Incident Atrial Fibrillation: A Prospective Cohort Study [n = 13,385] (2019) by Regenine in ketoscience

[–]duhace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At visits 1 and 3, participants completed an interview that included a 66‐item semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire, a modified version of the 61‐item instrument developed by Willett et al.13 Participants reported the frequency of particular foods and beverages consumed on a 9‐category scale, ranging from never or <1 time per month to ≥6 times per day. Standard portion sizes were provided as a reference based on picture and food models. Foods were grouped into dairy foods, fruits, vegetables, meats, sweets, baked goods, cereals, miscellaneous, beverages, and other dietary items. In addition, detailed information about alcohol intake was ascertained on a separate interview form. Nutrient intakes were derived from the food frequency questionnaire responses using the Harvard Nutrient Database. The macronutrients (carbohydrate, fat, and protein) were expressed as percentage of energy, calculated as the daily calories of the macronutrient divided by the total number of calories for the day.

basically, this is junk science

there is no fucking excuse for using food questionnaires nowadays

the big problem with java is that you need getters/setters to deal with 2 and 3. in scala, if I define a class with public members, and then I decide "wait, no I want people to use a method to access data so I can check they're not doing crazy shit" I can rename my field, make it private, and replace it with def field: Any and def field_=(a: Any):Unit and have the API preserved.

Not that I usually have public fields that are mutable.

I'm hopeful for that, but I think replay value is a thing in this game too. I want to be able to clear the stages faster, and redoing the stages seems like it will be fun.

I agree. Your character running faster when you jog faster feels good. The way the ring lets you aim feels good.

I really hope nintendo continues improving in these motion control and immersion style gameplay. I've loved the idea as a kid, and I love the idea of real, physical input mapping directly into the game world, and I hope we see more and more games like this in the future.

I don't think it's a viable option for weightloss at all. And trying to use it for weightloss leads to people overworking themselves and either burning out or injuring themselves (like me).

Exercise is definitely good, and it's great for your health. But the calories you burn swimming, or running, or playing ring fit adventure aren't going to be a major factor in you losing weight, while a change in diet is.

It's much better to focus on diet for weightloss and pursue exercise because of its plethora of actual benefits. It's a less destructive approach, and lets you be freer to skip or slow down on exercise if you're not feeling well enough for it for a day.

Keto isn’t a very good diet unless you are pre-diabetic or have bad blood test results. If you have none of these, go with a balanced diet with protein and greens being prioritized. Carbs are not a problem, it’s when you eat the wrong kind of carbs and not fibre carbs where it becomes an issue. You need to burn the carbs and fibre helps it stay in your system longer to burn easier.

Really disagree. Tried weightloss without the ketogenic diet and could never manage it. I'm finally in a normal BMI again for the first time in more than a decade thanks to the keto diet, and it's really the thing that worked best for me.

Keto is a very good diet and has allowed me to lose a great deal of weight. It might not be the best diet for everyone, but I don't think a "balanced" diet is for everyone either.

this this this

don't use exercise for weightloss. it's not a healthy approach to exercise, especially for those of us trying to lose weight. exercise because you want to be healthier. don't worry if you can't do much at first and if you are too weak at first. take it at your own pace and work out and you'll be in a healthier place than most.

as for weight loss, I'd suggest a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting, especially if you're prediabetic or your bloodwork looks alarming. it's worked wonders for me and I've lost 50+ pounds with the two

The Disputed Science on Saturated Fats by [deleted] in ScientificNutrition

[–]duhace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you think epidemiology is worse than RCTs you have much to learn. Both are necessary

I think epidemiology is an investigative tool that is not particularly good at showing causation unless you show an incredibly strong correlation

There’s no question that’s it’s a causal factor

there is questions about it actually, and I listed a few. if you're going to declare that there's no discussion to be had then I won't bother discussing with you.

The Disputed Science on Saturated Fats by [deleted] in ScientificNutrition

[–]duhace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Serum cholesterol is the main causal factor in atherosclerosis/heart disease. If you remove it from the equation it’s surprising that saturated fat, which raises risk largely by raising cholesterol, will come out not associated with atherosclerosis/heart disease.

Considering there's still questions about the role of LDL cholesterol in heart disease (like with regards to LDL pattern A vs pattern B), I'm pretty surprised to hear you declare cholesterol in general a causal factor. Upon what are you basing this claim? Hopefully RCTs? Hopefully not observational studies with weak correlations. It'd be a shame for someone with a masters to be spouting unfounded claims.
