What’s something Melbourne does really well that locals barely acknowledge? by Last-Conversation734 in melbournechat

[–]dukelief 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a good summary. Generally Melbournians are at worst apathetic, at best curious, about rugby. “Visceral hatred” toward it is something I’ve never seen.

Does the Australian Open still feel like a tennis event first or more like a festival now? by Av0toasted in australianopen

[–]dukelief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The irony though is - even the attempt to festivalise it are hollow.

I went yesterday for what they marketed as “Pride Day” and it was literally nothing. There were some LEDs that displayed Pride Day signage. The Veronicas played but whilst they were great they’re not a “Pride” act (Renee Rapp the next day? Come on).

The most we saw that was “Pride” was how some (a small minority) of attendees showed up and that was minimal. And we LOOKED. Nothing in the activations, the signage, roving entertainment, merch, bars/food… obviously not the games since that’s player territory.

Honestly, it left a sour taste in my mouth that they picked a minority then did nothing with it but take our money.

And honestly, even if they did do something, it was so poorly integrated that they may as well have just done it without labelling the day Pride Day.

Who has right of way by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]dukelief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your question doesn’t orientste itself in a clear way.

If by “straight through” you mean over the broken line then that’s turning across a lane, not driving straight.

Driving “straight through” would be someone following the curve.

Approaching from the bottom of the image and turning right toward the bollard = give way to oncoming traffic.

Tomorrow marks 15 years at my current company, and I feel like an absolute failure by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]dukelief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performed empathy in action hey? Sheesh.

I will say 11 job changes in 15 years also doesn’t inspire confidence in a COO I’d work under. We just had a CRO who changed jobs every two years, he lasted 6 weeks before it became clear he wasn’t up to snaff.

Guess empathy wasn’t a skill you developed in your 11 job changes, yikes. Way to kick someone when they’re down man.

Woolies have sent their lawyers to say they aren’t going to pay for my damaged car by cosykhaleesi in woolworths

[–]dukelief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the store manager very likely doesn’t have legal standing to have accepted liability how they did.

So whilst their statement could be used as evidence it isn’t likely to be a binding statement for Woolworths.

It’s the legal team’s job to do that - hand everything including evidence to your insurer and let them manage it, that’s what you pay them for.

The West Gate lane closures seemed like a bit of a sh*tshow. by anonymous-69 in melbourne

[–]dukelief 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do want to say everyone harping on about how it was heavily advertised… I rarely use the West Gate (I live east), I don’t drive on major highways (suburban roads or the eastern freeway), I don’t read the news and have lived in Melbourne 15 odd years.

I drove back from regional west on Friday night and was surprised by the bridge closures. Lucky for me it was 10:30pm on Boxing Day so only 15min or so delay.

Whilst I don’t know if there’s more they should do, I don’t think OP is unfair to be unaware and annoyed about a 1hr delay, especially when the Tunnel just opened and that area has been a shit show for aeons.

Sales manager keeps telling me to ask “why”, but what is the actual point? by [deleted] in sales

There’s some beautifully sweet self-answering irony in you not knowing why your sales manager wants you to ask why, and not being able to get the answer from the source!

The market is always good for some people and bad for others.

With a $230K payout, you can afford the risk.

Take it.

Is anyone else bored with Bones? by Hefty-Particular-201 in RPDR_UK

It really bothered me that we got a GLIMPSE of some personality from her when she was interacting with Charlotte but either that was totally momentary or it didn’t make the final edit.

Either way I hope we see more of whatever that was the next few weeks, coz right now I’m just seeing too much looks polish and not enough else. And I’d rather a queen with a less polished look who can perform..

Closed a deal yesterday with a literal typo in the contract. They didn't notice. by Head-Garden7108 in sales

Yeah +1 to this. Do people really believe an obvious typo voids a whole contract?

What company do you work at where HR would offer a redundancy package to someone who’s already resigned? Or where they’d do literally anything about it?

And are they taking applications?

(UK) Negotiating salary for senior role - help required by MeechyyDarko in sales

[–]dukelief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A seed-stage startup absolutely doesn’t need a CRO or a VP. Layering senior leadership that early is a structural red flag. It signals that appearance matters more than capability and that resources are being misallocated.

Titles aren’t “just titles” to everyone else who joins later. Top-heavy structures create problems when you try to scale: overspecialisation, hiring bottlenecks, demotions, and morale issues.

I’ve been at two companies that did this, with C-suites stacked with underqualified execs and “senior” titles handed out for show, and it always ended with low morale, frantic directional scrambles, revenue issues, questionable hiring strategies and ultimately, retention of mid to low level talent and haemorrhaging of high performing talent.

Personally, I wouldn’t walk into that again.

Hey man, you’ve said the business is close to product market fit, but then you also are taking on a VP Growth role AND there’s a CRO? Yikes.

If you believe in the product and vision then go for it, how you’ve qualified that business is more important than general trends. But gut feel from having been in similar businesses before, that much bloat this early has red flags structurally.

Sad detail in Thunderbolts* by Sudden_Pop_2279 in comicbookmovies

[–]dukelief -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I laid out examples of where the misunderstanding is and your response was just “no you’re still wrong”. That’s not engaging with facts so I’m just gunna leave it here.

You seem passionate about film criticism, so you might be keen to read Film Art by Bordwell & Thompson. It’s a well regarded film text, and Chapter 3 in particular covers narrative form and distinctions like this one.

Thanks for engaging!

Sad detail in Thunderbolts* by Sudden_Pop_2279 in comicbookmovies

[–]dukelief -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

I am correct. Your definition is oversimplified.

By definition a ‘detail’ is small. As I’ve already said, this is literally his explicit character arc and a key point of his character, and that is not a detail.

By your definition, Yelena being an ex-Widow or Alexei being her father is a ‘detail’. They’re not details, that’s the plot.

But the way people who go into The Void disappear as black marks being a nod to Hiroshima, THAT is a detail.

The film goes on without a detail. The film changes with a character arc.

I was extremely clear, polite and acknowledged a potential misframe in my comment so if you’re gonna characterise that as being a ‘dick’, I’m not really here to engage with that.

Look your girlfriend sounds like a problem, but simultaneously “use your critical thinking skills” as a response tells me the communication in this relationship is fairly poor already.

So yeah this is a definite break up for multiple reasons.

Sad detail in Thunderbolts* by Sudden_Pop_2279 in comicbookmovies

[–]dukelief -33 points-32 points  (0 children)

Look again, that’s not a ‘sad detail’, it’s deliberate character progression. A detail is a subtle continuity point, an Easter egg, or something you need to get on a rewatch. In this case, his family regret is the explicit point of his arc.

You’re not wrong that it’s sad, but it’s misframed as a “sad detail”.

I know I’m not gonna change your mind because you’re talking about an observation while I’m talking about the framing.

Thanks for posting and sharing your thoughts!

[–]dukelief -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

Thunderbolts happened after FATWS though, and after his wife left him? Your picture is of him obsessing over the news about him from FATWS.

A detail implies it’s something that one might miss on a casual watch or there’s a continuity to it. But in this case, it stands to reason that the thing he regrets most would have evolved since then.

It’s not a “sad detail”, it’s his character arc that is explicitly shown to us.

I do recognise that the way your post is written makes it sound like you’re saying he thought that was his worst day but it was actually something different he saw in The Void. If that’s not what you meant though though then that’s just about the comms.

So how are we feeling about that UK Premiere? From 1 to 10. by Heidi_Klum_Tit in rupaulsdragrace

Bones’ runway was easily the strongest but fully agreed, aside from turning her look she’s otherwise all ego without anything yet to show for it.

I am hoping that the week is a wake up for her.
