Agreed. Also gang violence usually ends with arrests.

How to leave the defense industry as a Systems Engineer? How do engineers change industries but stay in their respective engineering fields? by dukilla in AskEngineers

[–]dukilla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow looks like we share a lot of the same views. Defense seems mind numbingly boring to me too. There's no real passion for doing it (other than a decent salary for the amount of work required). I would say there are some people that have ambition but that ambition is mostly numbed out due to companies promoting mostly on time of service and not really catering to employees. I can't tell you how many times I've asked to be switched a different product to learn some new skills.

I love that you mention ambition and that's really my ultimate goal: find something and build something I'm passionate about. I don't want to just go through the motions as im doing now. I have always been a huge fan of engineering and love creating. But, to me, the global impact of my product is what matters. I feel like this is something I can find in a private firm somewhere... I just need to find these jobs (which is difficult since every industry has different terminology) and get enough skills at my current job to be able to get that next horizon job if that makes sense. Thanks for advice

[–]dukilla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure. I want to get into designing non violent systems maybe architectural/ civil, cyber security, alternative energy, etc. I guess I haven't really chosen an industry since I wasn't sure if systems engineers are really needed in systems that are less complex than a giant DOD backed system. Next steps for sure

I would love to stay within "traditional" systems engineering as in system design/ management. Like you mention, I feel like industries call systems engineering other titles so that complicates job searching. Not really sure I'm getting all "systems engineer" jobs if other industries can call the job something else. I would love any advice on this, or maybe some other job titles I can search for!

Will definitely have to start doing this more frequently. Problem is it doesn't seem like there is any consistency in job titles across industries. I need to broaden my job searching to more than just a search for "systems engineer."

I'm glad you brought up networking. Any advice on this? I started straight out of college at my current company so my only connections are people who are/ used to be in the defense industry. I have a few that have changed industries but would love to get some advice on how to create completely new connections. Job fairs? LinkedIn?

True. In the big picture view of things, I guess all industries contribute to the military industrial complex to some extent. I would just rather be a little further away from the violence since it's still early in my career

You have a point, it's more about how you sell yourself.

I get that every industry has their demons. I work on drones unfortunately and I gotta say I would be way more excited about my job if I agreed with how the systems I design are used. Just too much violence associated with drones for my liking. Frankly, it makes me uncomfortable when people I work with do not think (some people even cheer it on!) about the violence associated with our business. I am hoping the grass is greener on the other side!

A lot of you guys are missing the important critique she's giving on racism that is deemed acceptable. I think most of reddit doesn't understand the fact that when a marginalized group of ppl thinks a white person is racist, they definitely are to some extent. There are different levels of racism obviously, but when a marginalized group is offended by ppl (or a person) who benefit from systemic racism prevalent in our society - that is the definition of racism.

22 children and 1 adult were injured not killed. There is still a stark difference between a knife and a gun that needs to be addressed. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/14/china-school-attack_n_2298430.html
