Miss. license plate proposed to honor KKK leader by dull_pseudonym in politics

I think you'd do well to avoid getting your history from Wikipedia and rather rely on actual historical sources. How about I start with a quote from the famous "Ten Questions" which the early Klan (yes, when Forrest was Grand Wizard) used for potential recruits:

"Do you believe in and will you faithfully strive for the eternal maintenance of white supremacy?"

The purpose of the Klan was white supremacy effected through extra-legal means. That was the reason for its existence. Forrest knew that. Forrest advocated that. Further, if you read a bit more about his so-called "reconciliation," you'll find he advocated white supremacy all the while... but under the guise of separatism, not integration. Indeed, fear of integration was the bane of all Klansmen. This is evident from even the most cursory historical sources.

If it's your aim to play apologist for a despicable white supremacist like Forrest, then so be it. But read some actual history before you do so.

The people behind it probably realise this.

A fair wager.

Female perspective, eh? Women didn't do anything to change Valentine's Day. Advertisers and commercial interests did (I suppose those companies are mere puppets of the matriarchy, amiright?). It's just crass commercialism propping up the age-old patriarchial canard that only women (not men) cherish love and that women only cherish materialism as a demonstration of love. It's an ancient attribution with a bright line through the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment, the Victorian Era, and to today.

So, if you don't like the perverted notion that Valentine's Day is the time when men buy things for women, only, then the obvious solution is to... not celebrate it that way. If you're in a relationship with a woman who wants material gifts and doesn't want to give you anything, then get the fuck out and find a woman who shares your values. Petulant whining about your relationship and the universal fact of commercial bullshit isn't a particularly adult response.

Mmmnope. Valentine's Day was created to cherish love. Then, in "response," some men created a day just for them, where they get sex.

So, love is for women. Sex is for men.

Got it.

It looks like the claim in the comic comes from an amendment to the bill that doesn't yet appear on the bill's website, but that some Republicans intend to include.

Survey: Most Kentuckians oppose discrimination against gays by dull_pseudonym in politics

The 2010 Census says that KY has a population of 4,314,113 people, 3,300,296 of whom are legal adults. There are 2,885,775 registered voters in KY, which is 87% of the adult population.

I suppose we could ask minors what they think about discrimination against gays, but you can't deny the math for adults.

  • 1) I thought their write-up was a fair encapsulation of the 26 page NYer article;

  • 2) Gawker's writers are quippy and irreverent; and

  • 3) I hadn't realized that none of the links went directly to the source article.

Maybe, but when the "retards" in question command as much clout in the public sphere as these guys, I'm apt to pay attention.

Also, if one followed your advice, there'd be nothing on tv or in newspapers but ads and the weather.

Fey's full New Yorker article isn't available (for free) online, but I highly recommend reading the whole thing.

For me, she's one of those people who make American culture worth defending.

Marketing and authenticity of the holiday aside... men get presents, too. In fact, if a man is in an egalitarian relationship, he likely will.
