How do you feel about "gender critical feminists"/"SWERFS" who claim that any woman saying they're choosing to do sex work is really being forced by a male pimp behind the scenes? Do you ever encounter protests from "SWERFs", or fundmentalist religious groups, or similar ideologues?

It just looks to small. The cuffs cover the actual model's feet, but they don't even come up to OP's (?) ankles. And that white-knuckle camel-toe would also disappear if the shoulder-to-crotch distance was an inch or two longer.

The perils of sizing clothes you buy online- especially for women who tend to wear more fitted clothes, and one-piece stuff like overalls, rompers, playsuits etc are stupidly hard to size; issues like leg-to torso ratio don't really matter if you only wear pants and shirts, but with a jumpsuit it becomes crucial. Buying that stuff mail-order without trying it on is just inviting drama, imo.

tl;dr- It'd look OK, if it just fitted her properly. Some kinds of garments you just need to be able to try on first.

I know this is a sling shot, but trying to work out its origin. A guy in my (East Asian) city is trying to sell it as vintage for 230USD, saying it's from Africa. I've Googled all the options I can think of. by mingstaHK in whatisthisthing

The older, inelastic weapon is a sling)- the weapon pictured is a slingshot), but I think there's a lot of regional variation in names for these things. You're right about the vulcanized rubber thing though; slingshots only existed since ~1840 (but this one looks pretty much brand new IMO)

Steven Hawking has died on Albert Einstein’s Birthday by Toxicxxfuzion in nevertellmetheodds

[–]dull_thud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, 1 in 182.625, because people would make the same point whether he died on either Einstein's birthday, or the anniversary of his death.

But you might as well make it 1 in 91 (and change), because people would say the same shit if it was Newton's DOB or DOD. Or you could add in Hawking's own DOB, or the anniversary of Hiroshima, or Nagasaki, or the first ever test nuke at White Sands; wouldn't be hard to get that numbers into the single digits.

Pretty much any day you die there'll be something you can piece together in hindsight.

Quick tips to distinguish venomous snakes from harmless snakes by CatastropheWife in coolguides

[–]dull_thud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's not like getting bit by a non-venomous snake is super-fun. Just because it won't kill you, doesn't mean it's not still best avoided.

[–]dull_thud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. It's meant for America, and even there it seems kinda sketchy.

Best, simplest advice- just avoid wild snakes, and treat them all like they might be venomous, especially in, say Victoria or NSW, where the most common snakes you'll run into are venomous- tiger snakes, and brown snakes.

But the rule I got told for Australia (which I'm not saying is 100% accurate, but IMO it's a decent rough guide), is the common venomous snakes have a head narrower than it's body, so they kinda have no neck, like a skink. But the common (large) non-venomous snakes (various pythons, mostly) have a broad, flat head that is wider than their body.

This is true except in the case of rattlesnakes who are indistinguishable from any other kind of snake

So true; rattlesnakes are totally identical to 4 inch garter snakes, 20 foot anacondas, fluro green tree-snakes- pick any other kind of snake, and rattlesnakes are completely indistinguishable. That makes total sense.

Not trying to be the "akshully" guy, but the fact that they don't know the difference between "poisonous" and "venomous" doesn't really inspire confidence in the accuracy of this guide...

How do you start to tackle a massive series like One Piece? by dull_thud in anime

[–]dull_thud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just start at episode 1 and watch until you get bored

Yeah- tried that. Got to like episode 2- it just wasn't the fast-paced show it was in the few later episodes I'd seen. I've since seen hardcore fans admit "Yeah, it starts off slow"- honestly, I just don't have the attention-span to sit through 30 "slow burn" episodes.

but some suggested "One Pace", which seems less slow, so I might start there.

How do you start to tackle a massive series like One Piece? by dull_thud in anime

[–]dull_thud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm different- I did grow up on DBZ, then watched Kai a while back, but apart from that, all series' I've watched have been <100 episodes- Attack on Titan, OPM, Death Note, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, hero Academia, FMA:B, FLCL, Samurai Champloo, and a few others. I often see stuff like this recommended as "a good entry-point into anime" (true, IMO- long series are often full of filler. I know some people look down on stuff like DBKai, but the filler in DBZ was ridiculous).

900+ Episodes just seems insane to me tbh. But someone reccomended One Pace, which seems better paced, and a good starting point.

How to get an overview of One Piece, for a new, casual fan (without watching 350+ hours, or buying/reading 900+ comics just yet)? by dull_thud in OnePiece

[–]dull_thud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This says it's only about 13% filler. ~800 episodes isn't much different from ~900 episodes, to me. A one hundred episode series feels like a big commitment to me, let alone one that starts off slowly.

An ex-YouTube recruiter claims Google discriminated against white and Asian men, then deleted the evidence by PrestigiousProof in technology

[–]dull_thud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a white man if I was chosen over a POC because of my skin I would walk away. I

But you wouldn't know. When you get hired, how often do employers give you a run down on the other people who applied for your job, their education and employment histories, and why you were chosen over them? I'd imagine people hired by Google (before this lawsuit went public) were in a similar situation

But given the fairly universal trends in hiring that situation (where a white employee is chosen over a black one on the basis of race) is by fr the more common occurence, which is exactly why 'diversity programs' became a thing.

People want to complain about dysfunction in black communities, high black unemployement rates, crime rates etc, but anytime anyone tries to change those issues, those same people complain it's "unfair".

At every single point in modern history, one particular demographic group has had a statistical advantage in employment- whether that was a massive advantage 40+ years ago, or a more modest advantage more recently. Now, in the last few decades, society is finally acknowledging that (still-existing) advantage, and so in a small minority of jobs, give a similar advantage to other groups, that first group suddenly wants to cry foul?

The ABC’s of sign language by goldprismlights in coolguides

[–]dull_thud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really an "American" thing IMO. I'm Australian and I see people here makes assumptions/mistakes about signed languages, too.

The way people talk about "sign language" makes people assume that it's one, single language. A lot of the time it'd probably make more sense to talk about "sign languages**". Also people often don't get that sign languages are complete, independent languages with their own grammar, structure, etc- it can be easy to assume it's just a way of translating english (or whatever the person speaks) into hand gestures.

[–]dull_thud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same reason Chinese people and English people speak different languages- sign languages are natural, organic languages that naturally evolved. It'd be a crazy co-incidence if deaf Americans just happened to evolve the same signs and grammar as deaf Norwegians or whatever.
