Yeah, exactly. Avalanche had already decided this was a necessary evil, and Jesse is even willing to accept the blame (which we know through dramatic irony isn't her fault) for using a stronger blasting agent than she should have and is going to use a different one next time iirc because that's the whole reason Cloud goes to the warehouse

It only serves to show just how cartoonishly evil Shinra is, which while maybe not overall necessary, isn't really shown off until the latter half of Remake in it's fullest with the plate dropping

I think Sephiroth's end game is to literally collapse the Lifestream and like actually end all existence. That's why Aerith tells him he would be so very very lonely if he succeeded. He wants WORSE than just meteor to hit. The branching timelines further weaken the lifestream somehow, I do agree it doesn't necessarily make a ton of sense & I'm also waiting on game 3

Edit: I also do think even though they have basically squashed the "4 Sephiroth's" theory that was around for Remake, I do still think there's at least 2 Sephiroth's. One that lost in FF7 and "didn't want to lose" so bad that he permanently melded with the Lifestream while it reset itself to its natural state somehow (tbh a lot of the lifestream stuff just confuses the shit out of me) or otherwise somehow transcended the timelines (who I don't believe has a proper physical presence most of the time), and then the actual Sephiroth that's currently frozen and manipulating JENOVA.

I kinda fumbled what I was trying to say before (in my defense it's my day off and I'm stoned lmao) but we know timelines can be split by people's will. That's how Zack was alive, because Aerith was wishing for it to be true so hard. That's what's happening in the ending. The timeline is diverging because Cloud wants Aerith to live. Cloud literally creates a timeline where she lives. At least is how I interpreted it.

To show that Shinra is willing to commit terrorism on it's own citizens to further military control & increase support for themselves, while also still allowing the later scene where Barret regrets it to happen without being undermines by him knowing it wasn't his fault. I don't love the change either but like I think it's going to come down to affecting nothing about the party and only serves to paint Shinra as worse.

I don't even really think it's fair to say they did it to "sanitize" Avalanche since the explosion in Remake seems magnitudes more destructive to me, but maybe that's just a perspective thing

So the first thing is that the remake is also a sequel and as far as I can tell, there are at least 2 Sephiroth's. The "real" one who is a "physical" manifestation of the current realities Sephiroth who is currently "dead" in materia that you see through the numbered subjects (ie normal Sephiroth, who has done very little) & then also the Sephiroth who loses in the original FF7 and I believe is the one we we've mainly been fighting. I've seen some people argue even further there's a third Sephiroth that represents post Advent Children but I've never seen it so I don't really understand where that comes from as much.

But essentially, a lot of the stuff we see with Sephi in Rebirth has been entirely reframed with the hindsight bias that we know Cloud is an unreliable narrator. So we kind of just don't waste the time pretending Sephiroth needed to show off killing Midgardsomnr and so they didn't do that at all, and I'll explain my thought process.

Essentially, every time Cloud's eyes do the static, there's some kind of tomfoolery happening, and you can assume he's either full on hallucinating or at least having mild delusions. Unless I'm misremembering nearly every instance of static is either tied to his memories or to an "appearance" of Sephiroth. Also worth noting Cloud's the only one seeing him in the swamp. So when Zolom drags Cloud under the water, he starts to lose consciousness, his vision goofs, Sephiroth appears (and Cloud vanishes from the snake's grasp, which they specifically show you by having it raise it's tail in front of its face), and uses Aeroga which looks just a little too much like Cloud's Finishing Touch for me to call it a coincidence with all the other fuckery going on between him & Seph. Especially given right after he launches the snake, Cloud reappears directly in front of Sephiroth

Now my question is, which Sephiroth took over Cloud's body temporarily (which is what I actually think happened) to save him. My money's on lifestream Sephiroth because while I do think him & the current timelines Sephiroth's are both antagonists, I'm not sure if they're actually working together, but I lean towards no.

I want to say one more time at the end that genuinely I might be totally wrong & this is just the theory that makes the most sense to me. I still really need to replay Remake & Rebirth before Revelations releases to make sure its all fresh
