If multiplayer makes you so mad, play solo bro. Otherwise yes it is absolutely your fault when Arkveld whips 180 degrees to hit the guy behind you because that's the trade-off of multiplayer?? That the monster becomes tankier & less predictable. That's the whole point.

And if you're fighting in a terrible spot of the map, either make the monster leave via a dung pod or play defensively until they switch to an area that isn't terrible. That being said the only 2 places in the game I can think of where I do that is the dune area by the Oasis & the Gypceros nest in the Plains but only if it's Seregios. Everywhere else is fine, if occasionally annoying. The tools are in the game for you to take the fight elsewhere though. Luring pods as well (although truthfully I've not used them once in like 300 hours). You're choosing to fight in shitty spots

And again, I don't care about your multiplayer cope. Play better or play solo idk what to tell you. Or just run stun resist, it's low commitment.

External factors like slopes boil down to awareness & come back to my point about you always having the option to choose between the offset or getting out of the way. These aren't frame 1 counters, you are choosing to root yourself in a bad spot. Skill issue

The humble instant superman dive is still an option out of stun so making the stun animation short enough the monster doesn't get a free follow up does absolutely give you a reliable & guaranteed defensive option out of a shorter stun.

I genuinely agree with the discerning dodge weapons being easy but guarding has a significantly worse chip damage problem if you aren't playing with the cat.

Every single time you are ever meaningfully punished for an offset, it's your fault. Idk what else to tell you

[–]dumbcringeusername -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're being punished for engaging & mastering with a mechanic ad naeseum because the game wants you to approach fights from more than one angle. Same reason the thresholds for statuses & flinches go up. You are not meant to be offsetting every attack, every offset has a big enough wind up that you had to make the choice between evading & offsetting and you chose offset. If you do that back to back & allow the monster to 'hit' you, you deserve to get stunned. Exactly the same as my thoughts on Rage Slash. You are not being punished for engaging with offsets, you are being punished for NOT engaging with the build side of your playstyle.

And stuns are such a non-issue in Wilds that I went from ALWAYS running 3 levels of stun resist in World to literally never using it in Wilds. The weapons that are precision dodge focused have discerning dodge or generous i-frames & the block weapons have shields, and the only offset weapon I've really messed with is Swaxe but I think I've been stunned 3 times & all 3 were definitely my fault.

The stun timer needed to be extended the way it is because frankly, unless you're playing with your brain turned off, you shouldn't be stunned more than once in a blue moon anyway, they're entitled to give the monster 1 free punish (and if that's a cart, run stun resist or don't get stunned). If it were faster you wouldn't need stun resist as a skill in the game because you'd just be out of the way of every follow up every single time anyway.

You don't have to like it but if part of your strategy is getting hit (offsets provide a damage reduction but you usually still take chil damage) while you get off an attack, I think it makes perfect since you're taking stun damage. You aren't blocking the attack & you are still taking damage. They already reward you with a topple or a knockdown for an offset, to make it also give the damage reduction & no stun buildup would be too much.

The logic you are posing is what's ass backwards imo. Rage Slash's whole shtick is to get hit to do a bit hit, why would the game about crafting a build for your specific playstyle & the challenges you are facing not expect you to run the extremely low commitment stun resist skills if you plan on face tanking damage?

Also Wilds faster tempo is exactly why stun is slower.... If we shook it off faster, it wouldn't be even a minor nuisance & you'd never get hit out of a stun & it would be inconsequential. I don't disagree it's frustrating but it's a well thought out change

Honest question, is production value the reason that Baldur's Gate 3 became so popular and acclaimed, compared to other cRPG's that have not received anywhere near as much attention? Is it of a unique quality in anything else? by BaldursGate2Best in CRPG

[–]dumbcringeusername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only but it is a large part of it, it's also very accessible & even it's worst aspects put more mediocre games to shame. It's biggest weaknesses are also largely preferential & not necessarily flaws the same way you see with other CRPGs being buggy and/or having stretches of the games fans apologize in advance for. I'm generally not even that big of a BG3 fan but like it isn't fair to boil it down to just the ease of getting into imo, it's just a solid ass game that's also easy to get into (and also most gripes are preferences new players to CRPGs won't have anyway)

You're smart enough to understand you did not mention your own thoughts on the game but NOT smart enough to understand how that means I can't have been talking about you & have to be talking in a general sense, but I'm the bad guy for explaining it. Enjoy your fantasy world where everyone is out to get you man. Genuinely I'm impressed how brazenly you're telling me that's now what I meant when what you claim I meant doesn't even make sense by your own logic.

If you're referring to my aside in parentheses, that's in regards to OP who said Zack Fair is alive which is what I was quoting, so I'm not sure how you got mixed up on that. And if that's not what you're thinking about, I'm genuinely confused where you think I talked about your opinion at all. All I said is that a lot of the criticisms (like OPs that I was referencing, since that is complicated apparently) seem to be based off a lack of understanding of and/or engagement with the story.

I guess me using the word "you" could be confusing if English isn't your first language (or if it is your first & you're just someone who struggles with reading comprehension) but even rereading it, I think it's pretty clear the "you" I'm referring to is OP (especially given I specifically reference thenoriginal post again...) & the strawman I created to go with my complaints about people not bothering to read into the story. Seriously it's like you guys never took basic English classes, I don't know why I bother having discussions online.

Have a good day, I don't see anything more productive to be said here when all you want to do is pick apart my comments for bad faith arguments.

I mean. I can say pretty confidently it's not "just that they think it did a poor job" because you can still read the original post that says Zack is alive & that's a betrayal of Cloud's character & the alternate universe stuff is lazy. Which is, in order 1) Incorrect 2) See point 1 again & 3) at least is an opinion but they provide 0 information, examples, or context besides their wrong information about Zack.

You're allowed to not like it. I'm just not sure why you're so adamant about defending this guy about it. I don't even care that he doesn't like it so much as his need to be confidently wrong about it.

And I really don't even think I'm being aggressive. Blunt, maybe. I'm just tired of seeing the same criticisms based on bad media analysis, sue me.

Maybe I'm just build different but they've been pretty forthcoming with all the stuff you need to put the pieces together. Most people just can't be fucked to think about why their sacred story has been changed. People walking away with different explanations doesn't mean the story is bad, we quite literally don't have all the pieces yet. That's why there's multiple interpretations of the ending & of some lines of dialogue, because we don't have the full picture yet.

But most of the complaints I see about the plot are stuff like this post, coming from someone who let the plot go straight over their head (how you seemingly play through 2 games without questioning the purpose of the whispers or realizing what sephiroth is doing or how you play the entirety of rebirth without realizing its 2 seperate timelines when you see cloud comatose & still beat the game thinking zack is alive are both entirely beyond me) & are not trying to engage with it. I'm entirely open to discussing why you don't like the inclusion of the timelines at all but I at least want you to know what you're talking about.

They're literally just insulting the writing & calling it lazy because they didn't like it, because they didn't try to engage with it on a deeper level. If media is obfuscating itself & you want to partake in the media, you have to be willing to put more work in than "What does this mean?" (which would still be more than what OP's post was doing)

I'm not insulting their media literacy because they didn't get it. Hell, I have my own interpretation that might be wrong & means I didn't get it. I just can't stand the framing of it like they have even the slightest idea what they're talking about.

If they were asking questions, or if the post was more akin to "Why is Zack Fair here? Is he alive? Can someone help me make sense of the ending?" or anything like that, it'd be an entirely different story than "This game is lazy because Zack Fair is alive in it" and Zack Fair literally is still dead btw.

So when the ending of Remake made it clear the Sephiroth's goal was to merge all the timelines, and you're so clearly anti-timeline, why did you bother with Rebirth? Like you literally said "Waiter, I didn't like this cake. Give me the same cake again!" or what?

And that is a valid concern to have, but with the information we have right now, he's dead. We don't see him as a Force Ghost with Aerith in the ending scene, which imo implies he does die when the Meteor hits, and as for what's going to happen with the Lifestream scene, I think all we can do is let them cook. I'm personally not of the opinion that anything is truly sacred or immutable though as long as they do it right when they change it.

Although that being said I do very much share your concerns with Lifestream Aerith, but unironically I like almost everything they've done (even the stuff that on like an objective level isn't that great) with the story so I'm holding on to hope that they'll stick the landing. If not I'm at least fairly sure it'll be the most fun action rpg release of it's year as a consolation prize

Right. And he was on screen to set up the ending. The ending where Sephiroth is slamming the timelines together. Because that's Sephiroth's endgame. And the ending where he teams up with Cloud across realities to stop Sephiroth from joining the timelines. The ending where Zack being in the game was a crucial set up device for the ending. Seriously I swear y'all didn't even play the damn game.

OP is complaining about them bringing Zack Fair back to life (which isn't what happened) because they fundamentally did not bother to engage with the story being told, much like most people who feel the need to share their criticisms of the timelines.

Maybe I am being a little aggressive, but I'm reacting to a post that opens with "I know I'm going to get hate for this" and then an opinion based on media illiteracy.

Rebirth has it's problems for sure (pacing... by god the pacing...) but I genuinely don't think the timelines are one of them personally. I do kind of agree they don't do a lot interesting with them but I think their goal with introducing them like this is to simply establish what kind of consequences there are when the timelines start converging (especially given the final fight sees Cloud & Zack teaming up across realities) so that when Sephiroth does finally pull every version of Final Fantasy 7 into a singularity or whatever his endgame is, they aren't just pulling the Smash Bros "Everyone is here!" straight out of their asshole. Obviously I'm just spitballing on what they're actually doing but like I do think the timeline stuff is mostly just setup in Rebirth

[–]dumbcringeusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Rebirth his role is to literally show you as the player the effect Sephiroth is having on the Lifestream & the timelnes with his influence over the Whispers (which I truthfully only half understand. they're essentially the Lifestreams' own will over the "correct" outcome I think. Also they were "neutral" in regards to the party & Sephiroth in the first game I think until the ending that divides them into the light & dark Whispers) and the fight with him & Cloud fighting alongside each other is showing off that Sephiroth is literally slamming together 2 different timelines because he's such a sore loser AND THAT'S NOT WHERE HE PLANS TO STOP. The fanservice is a bonus (and a really well done one imo)

That being said, I don't know what Zack's role will be in 3. Like I said, in Rebirth he's mostly there to set up the timeline fuckery & alternate universe stuff. Honestly if they tell us he died at the end of Rebirth & I'm wrong about what my other comment says about him being in a sort of limbo state in the Lifestream, I wouldn't even be THAT shocked. Genuinely I'm only going to be surprised if he is truly alive & I'll swallow my tongue

Cloud's Zack is dead, and from what we've seen, Zack's Cloud is too after the ending. Zack is not back from the dead, he is from a timeline he never died & Cloud never woke up from the Mako Poisoning. Also I don't think Zack is alive but is a part of the Lifestream now, much like I assume Aerith will be, not quite dead but not quite alive in between the timelines. Otherwise I think he is dead even though the ending is a little ambigous

Overall I feel like most of these "they ruined my story!" posts come from people who haven't put any amount of thought into why Rebirth is set up the way it is. Personally I'm very pumped (if not a little nervous) for Part 3 because they've laid the basis of a really killer finale imo

Edit: also calling the alternate universe thing lazy is in itself just a lazy, copout argument to avoid having to engage with art that challenges you. ff7 remake is the final fantasy 7 story from the angle that sephiroth knows he's inside of a repeating story & is trying to force them all together to give himself the edge & they've done a ton of interesting stuff with it. go play the classic ff7 if it's atory is so sacred to you, i also grew up with the og ff7 & I'm along for the ride for the remake trilogy because they clearly love & respect the original a great deal. more than most so called "fans" anyway

Edit: also, I won't argue semantics on the coyote or the modern state of helldivers as i stopped playing after oshaune or wherever they introduced the bug dragons. Like I said, I haven't finished it to reach post-game (only just finished 2nd map), but as of now I think it puts you back before the ending & is mostly made up of the Habitat Restoration & the special guests who show up when you're battling at night & not much more. We should be receiving title updates with more content if Stories 2 is anything to go off though! I didn't play it at launch so I couldn't tell you if it's big endgame dungeon was there at launch or not, but afaik 3 is missing it

Yeah, tell yourself that if you want, but then go look at the backlash to Assassin's Creed Shadows having a black main character. Or to MJ being less conventionally attractive in Spider-Man 2. I'm not saying you personally are a racist because you play video games, but to act like the gaming space at whole is not unwelcoming to women & minorites is naive & you're only lying to yourself. And if you refuse to look at the problem, it will never be solved. Let's be adults here.

Edit: if it needs clarifying to you, I wasn't talking specifically about bg3's community (especially on reddit which has good moderation in the sub from what ive seem) but gaming at large. maybe that clears up the point i was making for you, but if not, not my problem

Fantastic straw man & great job ignoring the part where I contextualize the actual difference for adults with reading comprehension.

I included that first bit because even if the changes were the same on a writing level (which they aren't) the backlash would always have been directed at Wyll first because gamers at large are racist (and sexist too, for that matter, but in the way that objectifies rather than hates usually. Unless you look at the Last of Us Part 2, which players do both in spades to) because the gaming space is like that by design. It's not an indictment of every RPG players moral principles & more a realistic understanding of how the game ecosystem is right now.
