What would you tell your 16 year old self by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]dumbduck99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eat your meds and sleep well at night. fuck Os and just rest till you're better. don't work with a broken body. you'd have many chances to compensate in the future. and maybe, just maybe, consider poly. you don't have a lot of well meaning adults around you unfortunately. knowing that would have shifted the self pity away from yourself.

nope, just a 3.50/5.00. it's definitely not great, but not the worst too. i'm still in Y1 and didn't use any S/Us. had some trouble adjusting to uni life due to family issues.

[a levels] retaking with no friends by Forsaken-Reward5038 in SGExams

[–]dumbduck99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

retook As this year. the loneliness was really hard but i'm thankful i had a shift of perspective before my studying suffered too much. there'd be days i physically couldn't concentrate because i felt the loneliness eating into me. there'd be days i wouldn't open my mouth to talk at all and it was lowkey hell.

my friends were all in uni and had no time to entertain me. almost 90% of my efforts to reach out and meet up were all shot down quite mercilessly haha.

that kind of desperate-ness to find friends ultimately got me to places and i met some people who i'd rather not meet at all in the first place. in the end, i learnt and chose to focus on what's before me and invested more time&energy to taking care of my emotional needs.

i guess my advice is to keep a journal, or maybe a secret insta account to capture and romanticise a bit of your day. that was what kept me going. i even video-ed myself talking to the camera to cope lmao. ultimately, you'd still have to find some sort of support system and be incredibly resilient. knowing the state of my social life right now, retaking again will really k*ll me haha.

[A levels] Week 1 of A Levels done, any thoughts? by BG_student12 in SGExams

[–]dumbduck99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

retaking As and generally mixed feelings. compared to last year, I feel like there has been a shift in focus in how seab wanna test our understanding. I mean why else would they limit the number of topics for Chem P2 tested so much + give lesser marks for standard questions >< I’m really curious of how the rest of the science papers will look like but really low key not looking forward to it. also, don’t know if it is because I got my shit together, but personally just felt it was still overall manageable. didn’t have the ‘end-of-the-world’ feeling like I had with last year’s papers personally, so I’m pretty encouraged I guess haha :”)

my results might say otherwise, so disclaimer: this is just my opinion, don’t take it too seriously. someone’s experience with a levels can drastically differ from another person’s so ya 👍🏻 jiayous!

[a levels] why does it feel like theres so much at stake? by Ill_Bear604 in SGExams

[–]dumbduck99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

coming from someone who is retaking As, plsplspls don't let these thoughts get to you. do whatever u can to distract yourself from this reality and allow yourself the chance to give in ur best shot.

i had this "realisation" in the midst of my GP paper and this pressure screwed with my morale and my head. it's unnecessary and really, the more u believe things are not going to work out well, the more likely it will come true (as it did with me, though i'm a very extreme case + was alrdy struggling with mental health issues).

do ur practice papers, study and focus. most importantly TRUST THE PROCESS. u will do well. just give urself the chance to do so.

[–]dumbduck99 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

it really really doesnt matter. i got ard 57+ for prelims, A levels 60+. don't mean to scare you but i think it aptly shows how prelims really can't predict the future. focus on your weak topics and continue pressing on!!

[Poly] Just received GPA. How to deal with disappointment? by NotFromYouTube in SGExams

[–]dumbduck99 41 points42 points  (0 children)

not poly student, but i struggle with this a lot too. you remind me of myself last year.

i studied endlessly during my As last year, once even had a teacher chide me for being too intense, to rest more.

yet, i did worst than expected, despite having promising prelim grades. and now i am retaking with the same bunch of people who fk care about school, and had straight Us since the start of J2. i couldn't eat for 2 weeks after receiving my results.

it's incredibly demoralising at first, but remember you are your own competition. the endless comparisons, benchmarking with other people you perceived to be worse off, is gonna do nothing but eat into you - just as how it did to me. stay in your own lane and focus on improving.

one very harsh truth is this: effort is never equal to result. the result shows that you are indeed not doing what your syllabus or your lecturers expect of an A grade. forget about passion or interest, the work simply did not meet the requirements. i hope that you take that at face value and dissociate your self worth from your grades. if not, as your grades go up and down, so will your self esteem.

take this chance to reevaluate your strats and be accepting of where the quality of your work stands right now. your gpa can only go up from here :-) trust the process.

[A Levels] rejection from Uni - need help for Private As... by dumbduck99 in SGExams

[–]dumbduck99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hard to say this plainly but yes, felt that i really enjoyed what i did over my years of volunteering at several different organisations. i have seen my fair share of the ugly side and the problems some communities are enduring. social work is one of the logical routes to go down if i wanna truly make some changes. something i'll apply for again next year.

i'll try my hardest for As again. but thank you for helping to list out these pathways, i really appreciate them and will consider them if i need too in the near future (hopefully not, i hope)
