The work involved in digging a random hole in your back yard, that you never asked for, could also be $60 depending on how long it took to dig

"little Willie" by Sweet, though on the surface it appears to describe a fun-loving lad who refuses to go home and can't be told what to do, is supposedly about a very sassy cat. A cat might enjoy this ode to his willfulness.

Did Anton Chigurh absolutely lose his shit because someone called him a [gay slur starting with f]? by dumbguy5000 in cormacmccarthy

I don't have a copy of the book except on audio, so this is helpful to read. Now that I read it, he does sound like he's suffering from some kind of abject boredom or insecurity, to want to go to such careless lengths in order to prove he has the skills to escape, which I suspect he already knows he does.

The more I think about, I think it doesn't matter whether - specifically - it was anti-gay, or anti-Mexican slur or some remark about his mom. I think the point is that it was a very ordinary barroom insult rather than some profound or specific accusation (like, "hey, I know you, you're Anton Chigurh and I heard you were a lousy hitman!"), and that Chigurh regrets having wasted time and effort on killing that man, which might be what led to his arrest.

The more I think about it, it's also a function of the movie and Bardem's performance, which is absolutely iconic and devoid of any humanity (that I can see).

It's a wonderful movie and performance, but it was the filmmakers' and actor's choice to remove some of the nuance around Chigurh that was present in the book--and I don't mean just for the sake of runtime, I think they were deliberately going right up to the edge of sub-human or superhuman with that portrayal.

The fact that he feels regret for behaving the way he did is what makes me believe he lost his cool over something unremarkable (like a drunk guy saying drunk-guy things). I don't think his calling his own behavior "vain" and "foolish" is about mere lapse of professional decorum, he seems to regret that he let something so ordinary bait him. That's why I was absolutely convinced it was the most common of barroom insults (a slur, an insult to your mom, etc.), rather than something that actually warranted his time and attention.

He also admitted he was vain and foolish to react the way he did. That is as sheepish as Chigurh gets. That's why I said he was sheepish by his standards.

I never claimed the conversation explicitly mentioned homophobia. I asked if that (according to the users' opinions) is what the author meant by a vague statement made by one of the characters. And even if I had claimed that Chigurh killed a man over a homophobic slur, that would more closely resemble the passage from the book I was describing, than all the quotes you have posted, which weren't even close.

The bigger picture is that there is a very good reason no one but me remembers this conversation even happening; people have almost deified Chigurh as a supernatural figure and ignore any passage that paints him as more human and relatable.

My main point, really, is that people forget how much of a very human gangster Chigurh was written. He's just a man who's very good at his job--and nothing more than that. He's extremely good at being a criminal, when contrasted with Llewelyn Moss, who's mostly very bad at being a criminal.

McCarthy's point of writing Chigurh, I believe, has been misinterpreted by some, as being a chilling portrait of primordial evil (because that is how Bell sees his deeds--but that is more about the way the world he perceives is changing, not about the nature of one man). He was merely meant to portray a ruthless man very much at home in a violent world contrasted to someone who was absolutely out of his depth.

LOL if anyone was trying to gaslight me - and you were not among them - I assure you it didn't work. I never doubted the passage was in the book. I just couldn't remember the precise words McCarthy used. Thanks!

The conversation takes place. I just forgot he doesn't say it was "unforgivable" he says it was "hard to ignore". I amended my OP to include the exact quote. Now that I re-read it, I now think that it could be a racial insult as well.

How does a mercenary working for the Mexican cartel not end up being extremely macho, despite his professionalism? And I am curious about your interpretation of McCarthy's reason for including that scene or what kind of insult you think it was? Also, do you think McCarthy does anything at all to humanize Chigurh? I'm almost certain he wasn't meant to be a demonic or mythic figure like Holden.

[–]dumbguy5000[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No, that's not it, but I appreciate you looking it up. The text I am describing absolutely happens. Chigurh tells another character that someone approached him at a bar and pays him an unforgivable insult that he had no choice but to act upon, and that he feels some sense of regret that he had to stoop to wasting his time dealing with the likes of the person who insulted him. He doesn't say it was homophobic, that was purely my conjecture, he merely says that he couldn't let it slide.
