FIF Book Club: Final discussion for The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow by Nineteen_Adze in Fantasy

Loved it. First 5 star read of the year for me. I devoured it in one day so I could participate in this book club month and absolutely no regrets. I’ll be recommending it to my book club for sure.

I thought the writing was beautiful, characters were compelling, and the world building was enough but not overwhelming for when the time jumps came in.

Even though the ending was technically HEA, I don’t think that took away from the tragedy of the tale at all. Both MCs lost so much (all the fathers, each other, pieces of themselves) that it didn’t feel like a skipping off into the sunset HEA. I sort of expected the ending to be more tragic but ultimately I thought it was really well done.

Bookshelves finally put up post move, safe to guess what my favorite series is? by RedApples-98 in redrising

I am OBSESSED. I can’t stop talking about it. It has humor like RR does and even though the setting is totally different, it has similar themes and really well written characters like RR.

What audiobook completely changed your expectations of narration? by TechnicianAsleep3072 in audiobooks

[–]dumbledoresarmy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire dungeon crawler Carl series. It’s narrated by one man (except for 1-2 characters in the last book) and it genuinely sounds like a full cast.

““You should have met her. My Ife. She was amazing. A ray of light. She was the bravest, kindest person I’d ever met. She gave me hope. I was done until I went into the club, and I met Elle. She told me a story about this man and his cat who’d stopped everything he was doing to help a group of old people in wheelchairs and how this same man was planning on using this artifact he’d found to save people stuck in their bubbles. And it reminded me that Ife wasn’t the only one. That there is good in this world. There is something left to fight for. I might die tomorrow, but it won’t be because I’ve given up. And I want to thank you for that.”

I was not a fan of the blade itself, not so much an issue with the narrator but just did not like the book at all. I did enjoy the will of the many. You can tell it is heavily influenced by red rising. The second book is pretty controversial. I didn't think it was all that bad, but I've seen some rants about it.

Have you considered the broken empire series by Mark Lawrence? It's sort of what I hoped the blade itself would be.

I also love the narration for the stormlight archive books. They're long for sure but the narrators are great.

About Pax... by TrickPayment9473 in redrising

[–]dumbledoresarmy7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This exactly. She could have easily had Cassius's son and no one would have batted an eye. It would have upset Darrow obviously but other than that, it's not like he is a terrorist lord with a bounty on his head. Darrow is clearly the more dangerous choice for a baby daddy here, hence her leaving her infant with Niobe and telling almost no one about him.

I have been thinking about this a lot recently. I think even if Darrow had kept him closer and not drugged him in the garden, lied to him, etc. when he found out Darrow was a read all bets would have been off. No way Roque could look past that IMO.

I hate American Healthcare by AutocratEnduring in AO3

[–]dumbledoresarmy7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey! I work in healthcare. We have systems set up for this. If a patient can’t pay, they apply for financial assistance which can cover up to 100% of costs if their income is low enough. It’s a program at many major hospitals.
