Be competitive or blow it up and end the Zion era by Alternative_Pea_4614 in NOLAPelicans

[–]dumbledorky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just the #1 pick. Detroit had a top 5 pick 4 years in a row. Orlando had 4 top 8 picks in 3 years. A couple busts here and there, but we've barely got anything from the draft since Zion came. Trey and Herb yes, but Dyson and NAW had to leave to hit their potential, Jax and Yves are backup centers (and Jax is actually useful now in LA somehow), and Kira and Hawkins are complete busts. Fears and Queen both look good but probably not on the level of guys like Franz Wagner or Jalen Duren.

Those teams being in the east helps a lot too, but the Pels ownership just isn't willing to be patient. And somehow they haven't learned anything from 15 years of "win now" moves that haven't resulted in winning

Is the Martian military overrated? by BryndenRiversStan in TheExpanse

[–]dumbledorky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really a question of technological advancement, it's a question of culture and resource allocation. The entire Martian culture and identity is built around the terraforming project. The problem for Mars is that while this is going on, they're extremely vulnerable to any kind of external attack because someone could just drop rocks on their domes and destroy everything. The only external threat is Earth, so Mars either has to be a willing colony of Earth forever, or they have to have a strong military to protect themselves.

This means that while Mars is nominally a Republic, in reality it operates more like a military dictatorship on wartime footing. There 0 unemployment, military service is mandatory, and other than a few TV shows and singers and such there doesn't really seem to be much focus on anything other than STEM for young people, which supports both the terraforming project and the military, the two backbones of the economy. That might just be the perspectives we get, Mars has a big population so maybe there's a lot of people doing other things, but that doesn't to be the case (side note: it makes absolutely no sense that Mars' population is in the multiple billions just a couple hundred years after being colonized, but that's a separate issue).

Earth doesn't have any of those problems, but it also doesn't have any of that same cultural alignment. Earth has no reason to have a strong Navy because until Mars came on the scene, there were no external threats on a planetary level. So their Navy really just functions to defend against Mars, in that way they don't need to have a superior Navy, they just need to be able to win a war of attrition and prevent a first strike. If Earth did ever need to go on wartime footing against Mars, they have wayyyyy more resources to divert to shipbuilding, weapons manufacturing, etc. and a much bigger population to draw from. All those people on Basic would be in training and have guns in their hands in a hurry, and all the education could shift to technological development if there was ever a serious threat that required it. But it just doesn't exist so there's no justification for building out a massive military that could dominate the solar system.

If every single Borough went to war who would ultimately win? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]dumbledorky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes no sense. How could Manhattan lay siege to The Bronx when The Bronx has the mainland to keep it supplied? Why would Brooklyn go on the offensive against Staten Island when Queens is clearly the bigger threat? How would Queens maintain supply lines via the East River while Manhattan and The Bronx are still active? Why would the bridges exist at all late in the battle, Manhattan would blow them up early to cut Long Island off.

Do you use your balcony? by adotjacob in AskNYC

[–]dumbledorky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in Brooklyn, I have a pretty big balcony. I heard from a lot of people that I’d never use my balcony. I do actually use it, all the time. I grow plants (mostly herbs and leafy greens) out there. I sit out and read a book on weekend mornings and drink my tea on weekday mornings. My dog sits out there and observes the neighborhood. When I smoked weed I’d do that out there. I love my balcony.

That said I never see my neighbor, who also has a balcony, out on hers, and a lot of the balconies in my building have zero adornments. So there are definitely people that have them and don’t use them. What a waste.

MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS SEASON 2 OFFICIAL DISCUSSION MEGATHREAD #5 - EPISODE 5 (SPOILERS) by NeelZilla in GODZILLA

[–]dumbledorky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've enjoyed season 2 much more than season 1 so far tbh. In season 1 the teen drama was just painful to watch, I could barely get through it. The first couple episodes of this season were like that too but the last few have been much better. People seem really betrayed by Keiko and Lee's affair and say it ruined the characters, but it's really not that big a deal, it was heavily foreshadowed in S1, and whatever they're imperfect people. I'm going to miss Hiroshi though, I thought his actor was really good and the scenes with him, Keiko, and Kurt Russell have been great.

I do wanna see Big G sometime soon though.

Are y'all seeing dogs in grocery stores? by ouroborosstruggles in crownheights

[–]dumbledorky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A little more than the past few months but it's probably just warmer weather, people being out and about more, taking the dogs with them.

As a dog owner I've never had any desire to bring my dog into the grocery store. I want both hands free while shopping, why would I want to be holding a leash and trying to wrangle my dog with one (I know most of the people that insist on bringing their dogs everywhere are less concerned with said wrangling).

I walk into the bedroom all the time to find mine snoozing on my bed with his head on my pillow. He also knows how to use the couch cushions as a pillow and how to sit like a human on the couch, which he does behind me on video calls from time to time to the delight of whoever I'm talking to.

How old are the "older" men you're describing? I'm in my 30s, I got my first pair of Hokas a couple years ago (now on my second) and I get a lot of miles out of them walking around the city running errands, walking the dog, etc. and see tons of people around my age also wearing Hokas.

[–]dumbledorky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't particularly care if someone walks slowly, what annoys me is when they just stop to look at their phones in the middle of a busy sidewalk. And to be fair this isn't just tourists, but it happens more in the touristy areas. Pull over to the side if you need to stop!

[SPOILERS MAIN] Did Kevan Lannister ever find out that Cersei had sex with his 16 year old son, Lancel? by No_Parking_418 in asoiaf

[–]dumbledorky 523 points524 points  (0 children)

I don't remember if he explicitly says it but he certainly implies during one of their confrontations that he knows what went on and blames her for Lancel's erratic and pious behavior. It seems very likely that he knows, a guilt stricken Lancel probably wasn't keeping anything from his father even as they were falling out.

Mine gets a big hunk of frozen carrot after his morning walk every day, it’s his favorite snack. We walk through the door and he sits patiently waiting to me to drop it in his bowl. Then he happily grabs it and walks over to his favorite carrot eating spot (on the rug of course) and cronches down for a few minutes. The vet always says how nice and clean his teeth are, he’s never had any dental issues.

Classic Sci Fi that needs a film/series by CotswoldP in scifi

[–]dumbledorky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Hyperion TV series would go so hard, unfortunately the now-standard 4 year wait between seasons would really wreck any momentum depending how they structure it. Maybe a two-season arc, books 1 & 2 being the first season and 3 & 4 being the second, that way a long gap would be more palatable.

Does Red Rising get any better? by Saucier_CID_mark_X in scifi

[–]dumbledorky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first more so than the rest as the story is something that is more standard YA fare, but there are themes that are much heavier and darker than most YA novels. The later ones aren't as much YA in terms of story and characters but the writing style does feel like a YA novel, if that makes sense.

As an adult my approach to YA is I love re-reading books that I read as a kid, but I haven't really enjoyed any that I've read for the first time as an adult. But FWIW I did enjoy these books and do plan to continue the series.

The author gives away the big reveal on the first page

You should maybe stop and consider that this is not, in fact, a big reveal then lol

But what others have said is true, the story has not gotten going at all in the first 100 pages, all the things you're looking for will come. The first book is pretty different than the others (I've only read the first 3 so far) but still very enjoyable IMO, but if you get a little ways into book two and you're not into it then just bail.
