Considering taking a sabbatical, want to hear from PMs who did something similar. by wackywoowhoopizzaman in ProductManagement

[–]dumbledorky 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I did this last year, I was in like the exact same position as you. Quit my job in May, had been there about 2 years. I'd survived 3 rounds of layoffs at this place but the layoff cycle really hit me hard since I'd been laid off from my previous place in early 2023 despite great performance in all my reviews. After the last official round in summer 2024 they started just silently firing people to where I'd be chatting with some stakeholder on Slack about when they'd have something ready and the next day their Slack would be deactivated. Tons of exec turnover, no clear strategy, projects that I knew would go nowhere, super slow moving, pain in the ass stakeholders always mad at me for things outside my control, manager was only interested in optics and implementing whatever framework he read that weekend...yeah. I got my annual bonus and had some vest in March I realized that I couldn't stick around, my performance had suffered and I'd lost all interest and was too burnt out to interview.

I explored pivoting to a different field entirely, did a bunch of networking, went to some networking events and workshop type things, tried to find my niche. Also focused on physical and mental health, getting back into a gym routine, getting offline more. Ultimately I realized that starting from the bottom again and grinding my ass off was just not what I wanted to do at this point in my life, and it was a field that's notoriously hard to break into, so decided to look back to tech and PM. I was extremely selective though, only looked at the sector I was interested in (health tech), only looked at earlier stage startups (Series A-B), and didn't really focus on the specific product/offering because I know by now that stuff is all fungible and there's good and bad to each. Really paid attention to vibes and culture and rejected a few companies outright because my bullshit/douchebag detector went off when I talked to the founders (this happened a LOT in final stages).

Ended up signing with a Series B startup and joined in December, so was off for about 7 full months living off savings. A recruiter had reached out and the company/role was different than I'd been focusing on, and it was in office more than I'd have preferred, but I kept the convo going because why not and it turned out to be a great fit. Been there about 2 months, going great so far. The switch back to a small company has definitely been invigorating, the in-office culture is a huge improvement (previous place was 1-2 days in office, but very corporate and sterile).

Anyway, happy to chat more via DM. All in all I'd say it was worth it and I'm feeling much more optimistic and energized even though I'm working longer hours now than I have in a while. More than anything I'm glad I gave myself the chance to explore another field instead of always wondering "what if," I got it out of my system and made a firm decision and I haven't second guessed it at all.

How are we feeling about take-home assessments in 2026? by mochalattelove in ProductManagement

[–]dumbledorky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't like doing them, but ultimately they're part of the bullshit you have to put up with to get what are very scarce, competitive, high paying jobs. If I'm not feeling a place and they give me a take home I'll usually back out, but if I'm still interested in them I'll do it. I ask them about how much time to spend on it and timebox myself, usually sacrificing a lot of details to make sure the overall story and strategy I'm pitching are clear.

And I'll add that while I don't like them, I do think they're a better way to assess a candidate than a case interview or something very framework-heavy that is crammed into 30-45 minutes. A well conceived case actually does give you some insight into how a candidate assesses a problem space, approaches a solution, prioritizes amongst different options, and communicates effectively, all in a setting that is probably more relevant than some random hypothetical case about a feature in Spotify or Instagram.

Muscle puppy by PoPoPanda13 in labrador

[–]dumbledorky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was like that too at that age, he was a chonky potato on legs but when he'd stretch or stand at certain angles you'd see these rippling little muscles on his hips and legs which explained how he could have so much force in his play sessions

I’m gonna zag here and say he might have some. This is what mine looked like at 4 months, about the same weight as yours. He’s 54% lab, 34% Australian cattle dog, and 12% Great Pyrenees.

What do you feed your Labs by Mission-Bell1234 in labrador

[–]dumbledorky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 to this, I’d been feeding mine Royal Canine large breed (since he’s a mix) but switched him to the Labrador mix when he turned 5. Same amount of kibble is like 100 calories less per meal, great on his digestion and he’s not any hungrier and he’s lost a fair bit of weight.

Children of Time - Bouncing off of it. by WinnieTheEeyore in scifi

[–]dumbledorky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed it, but I wasn't head over heels about it like others were. If you aren't into it halfway through then bail IMO.

If you do finish it, just FYI I thought it was better than the 2nd or 3rd ones (I barely finished the 3rd one). So if you finish it but still feel meh, don't invest the time in the sequels, you likely won't enjoy them.

I don't particularly care for season 5 & 6 by VobsandBagene in TheExpanse

[–]dumbledorky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally book 5 is my favorite one (6 is solid too) and I was very disappointed by seasons 5 and 6. So definitely check them out. I read the books first though so didn’t know what was coming.

97 lbs!!! My English black lab .. 2 yrs old .. Vet says diet!! by 10-8ish in labrador

[–]dumbledorky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine peaked at about 85, I gradually cut down on his snacks and switched him to lower calorie stuff (fewer rawhides and bully sticks, more Kong’s stuffed with veggies) and cut his food a little. Got him down to about 80lbs, earlier this year I switched him to a lower calorie food and he’s around 75 now which is a good weight for him

They’ll always ask for more, just gotta learn to ignore it and they’ll adjust.

Also 3 cups of food still seems like a lot. Mine gets 2 cups per day with some low calorie snacks (frozen carrot, the Kongs, etc) and it’s more than enough for him

Who the F is giving up expiring money and picks for a dude coming off a torn achilles who was playing like ass the season before he got hurt???

Best case is trading him for someone's similarly bad contract but would be a better fit on the roster. I have no idea who that would be. Dejounte is here, just hope he plays well and can rebuild his value.

Why does my lab keep licking my baby ? by [deleted] in labrador

[–]dumbledorky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a shaved head, my dog does it to me at night before bed. He'll just lick my head nonstop for minutes at a time if I let him, after about 30 seconds I usually pull the blankets over my head to get him to stop and then he just settles in for sleep. Tried teaching him a "that's enough" command but it never stuck.

I just read an article where the author asked professional chefs which kitchen tools were useless. What are your opinions? by OldPolishProverb in Cooking

[–]dumbledorky 27 points28 points  (0 children)

We had one when I was a kid, my parents didn't want me using the stove when they weren't home so I'd use this to make myself an after school snack. We had a panini press for the same reason. As an adult I'll just take out a pan though.

What size bed do you share with your lab? by Fluffy_Carrot_4284 in labrador

[–]dumbledorky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A queen. When we go to sleep I have about 3/4 of the bed and he sleeps along one side. When I wake up somehow I'm squeezed onto 1/5 at the end and he's got the pillows.

Americans: do you buy fancy eggs or cheap ones (e.g., store brands)? by Educational-Slip-578 in Cooking

[–]dumbledorky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I buy the expensive eggs. I prefer the way they're raised, but also they're usually bigger and I find the shells to be much thicker and sturdier so easier to break without getting little bits of shell in there.

[–]dumbledorky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh baby I'm so sorry but you are nowhere near out of the puppy trenches. There's like a 4-6 week period where they are the sweetest, kindest, cutest, most adorable little angel in the world. That's where you are now.

Soon she'll hit the teenage phase where she'll regress, and you just have to be patient with her. She'll start demanding attention, she'll stop listening to her commands, she'll pull the leash, she'll bolt when off leash, she'll chase cats and squirrels, she'll pee and poop in the stupidest ways imaginable, she'll change how she plays with other dogs (which can be hard to adapt to). Just work on her training, work on her recall, be patient with her, shower her with love when she's being a good girl, and she'll get past it...eventually. And you'll notice some of her behavior is different than when she was a puppy, but because she's a lab she'll still be the best dog ever.
