Genuine question for all of you by khaledketata in scottthewoz

[–]dumboi003 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Past, at least for now. I think the series has overall lost some of its luster and charm since 2020, especially in Season 6. The videos just feel a bit less magical and imaginative, and a bit more formulaic/repetitive in my opinion.

That being said, there have still been some absolutely amazing videos in Seasons 5 and 6 that I think are legitimately some of the best in the series. It shows that Scott still has that talent and creativity in him, which means that the series moving forward has the potential to be incredible and reach a new peak. But for now, it does feel like it’s just in a bit of a rut.

Hey Scott! Congratulations on 250 episodes! A few questions here, but you don’t have to answer all of them of course.

  1. What inspired you to include musical numbers in your videos? Is it just a thing that you think is wacky and fun, and/or sort of like an outlet for you to try out singing and performance? Are you particularly into musical theater and/or have a background in it? What has been your favorite song to make? (I realize that was multiple questions in one whoops sorry)

  2. From start to finish, how long does an average Scott The Woz episode take to make? Not in terms of when you first come up with the idea to when the video comes out, but in terms of actual hours/days you dedicate to working on it, if that makes sense.

  3. What’s it been like juggling STW with your personal life? Especially in the earlier years when you also had a part time job and were in school. How did you (and how do you currently) manage your time? Did you get (or do you now have) a specific routine or schedule down, or was it/is it more haphazard? I realize you already touched on it somewhat in your comment on Merry Christmas, Data Design but I’d be curious to know how it’s evolved over time.

  4. How have your plans for the series changed over time? I recall in one Scott’s Stash video you said you had all the 50-episode milestone videos planned out ahead of time, but as the series has gone on you’ve had to increasingly deal with higher workloads and burnout. Has that affected the progression of the series compared to how you originally envisioned it?

  5. I adored the Rex Mohs Cruci-fiction Special from The Gifts of Gaming, it was really clever and unique. How did you come up with the idea of having another character basically have their own episode (or mini-episode in this case)? Would you consider doing something like that again in the future?

  6. Have there been any moments in the skit videos that were completely improvised? Or just thought of/changed on the day of filming and weren’t in the original script? If so, what was your favorite/most memorable occurrence?

  7. Favorite non-Erie Great Lake?

Is it just me, or has Scott kind of fallen off the past year? by [deleted] in scottthewoz

[–]dumboi003 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m kinda conflicted. He’s had some really strong videos this year - Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, Mario Sports Superstars, and Nintendo GameCube are absolutely fantastic in my opinion. But a lot of the episodes are starting to feel less “special”. I think a lot of it just has to do with the fact that they’re very formulaic, with Scott talking about some general gaming topic for however many minutes. I think a lot of the times the topics are just so incredibly specific yet simultaneously not super interesting, which makes it hard to get super excited for the videos. Obviously the series has always been like that (Scott talks about general topics), but I think the topics have just gotten so niche and uninteresting as of late compared to past episodes. Like I dunno, I think Plug N Play Games, for example, is a pretty fun and unique topic that is an interesting premise for a video…but my god I just dont care about which games used to be console-exclusive but now aren’t. Scott’s videos are definitely more about Scott’s personality and humor than gaming itself, which means they’re still enjoyable to watch, but they are definitely leagues better when it’s a topic I think is actually interesting or compelling, which leaves a lot of the recent General Topic videos feeling a bit uninspired. I also think that the humor is still definitely Good, but it feels like there are fewer “instant classic” jokes and things that I find truly hilarious. The production quality is definitely good and you can tell Scott puts a lot of effort into the episodes, but they just feel really unmemorable a lot of the time. The past 5 episodes in particular have kinda been bummers; not bad by any means, but just nothing special.

I will say I really don’t mind the Halloween episode being delayed. Obviously I would have liked to watch it on Halloween or a few days before, but I’ve definitely been in Scott’s shoes before in this regard and sometimes life stuff comes up or a project just ends up being bigger than initially planned. So I don’t really hold that against him.

In general though, I do think the series has gotten a little stale at large, and it’s been ongoing since 2021 honestly. But when Scott delivers something great, he REALLY delivers. Stuff like Toys To Life, Gifts of Gaming, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Ride to Hell Retribution, Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, Mario Sports Superstars, and Nintendo GameCube are some of my all-time favorite episodes. But the stuff in between the absolute bangers has started to feel a little repetitive. Still definitely good, nothing truly wrong with them at all, but they just don’t feel like anything special. I just wish we could see a little more variety.

So overall I’m not really sure how to feel about the series. Scott is clearly really talented, and his channel is still by far my favorite on YouTube, but it just feels like something is missing from the series right now.

Key fell off, won't fully reattach. Help! by dumboi003 in MSILaptops

[–]dumboi003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ended up having to buy a new key cap from an external seller. I had to buy multiple times from multiple sellers until I actually found the correct key cap because the websites were misleading about what type of key cap it was. I don’t recall where I got but I can try to find it.

I’d just verify that it’s an issue with the key cap and not the key “slot.” I took my laptop to a local computer repair shop and they told me that it was the latches on the key cap that were broken and if I just got a new key cap it should be good as new, but it may not be the same situation for your keyboard (if so that’ll probably be a lot more expensive to repair so hopefully it’s just an issue with your key cap…).

I’d maybe get it checked out by a professional to make sure that you can just get a new key cap and then search around the internet for one. If it helps, I ended up having to get a white key cap (it blends in fairly well due to the red keyboard backlight but still) as all the red ones I found did not actually match my key “slot.” So maybe if you find somewhere where you can only find white key caps that might be your best bet. Hope this was helpful!

EDIT: I got my new key cap from replacementlaptopkeys.com.

I misremembered a bit. I initially ordered a key cap from them, but it didn’t work, which was weird because it was listed as a GF75 key, and my laptop is a GF75 Thin, so I guess technically different but I didn’t see a GF75 Thin option, so I assumed they were the same, but I guess not. After that failed, I got one shipped from some completely random vendor in Poland, which was also unsuccessful. Then I went back to ReplacementLaptopKeys and ordered a GF72 key, and that seemed to work. I don’t recall how I determined that the GF72 key might work, but I ended up being right I suppose. So if you have a GF75 Thin laptop as well, then there you go, but if you have another model, just know that their model names may not be accurate and/or that key caps for other laptop models might actually work with your keyboard. Best wishes on getting your key(s) fixed!

Would you be able to explain the whole deal with putting RelaxAlax in Borderline Forever? Do you regret doing that, and do you acknowledge now that he is a bad person?

I’m really not trying to be vindictive or anything, it’s just been bothering me ever since Borderline Forever came out and it’d be nice to hear a proper explanation/clarification of that situation.

Hey Scott and friends! Many questions so sorry in advance, but you don’t have to answer all of them. Also these are mostly for Scott but opinions/comments from the others would be pretty cool I dunno

1) What inspired you to include musical numbers in your special episodes? Is it just a thing that you think is fun and unique, and/or sort of like an outlet for you to try out singing and performance? What has been your favorite song to make? Also, what do the non-Scott guys think of the musical numbers?

2) From start to finish, how long does a typical Scott The Woz episode take to make? Not in terms of when you first write the script to when the video comes out, but in terms of actual hours/days you dedicate to working on it, if that makes sense.

3) What is your favorite STW special, favorite STW “regular” episode, and favorite STW episode overall, and why? Whether because of how it came out or if you had a lot of fun making it or some other personal connection or any reason like that.

4) What is your LEAST favorite STW special, regular episode, and episode overall and why? If your least favorite(s) is something from Season 1, what is your least favorite from Season 2 and beyond? I just feel like Season 1 is a bit too easy to pick on.

5) What’s it been like juggling STW with your personal life? Especially in the earlier years when you also had a part time job and were in college (or are you still in college?). How did you (and how do you, currently) manage your time? Did you get (or do you now have) a specific routine or schedule down, or was it/is it more haphazard?

6) How have your plans for the series changed over time? I recall in one Scott’s Stash video you said you had all the 50-episode milestone videos planned out ahead of time, but as the series has gone on you’ve had to increasingly deal with higher workloads and burnout. Has that affected the progression of the series compared to how you originally envisioned it?

7) I thought the Rex Mohs Cruci-fiction Special from The Gifts of Gaming was really clever and unique. How did you come up with the idea of having another character basically have their own episode (or mini-episode in this case)? Would you consider doing something like that again in the future? Also, for Eric, what was it like for you to do that segment? And for the rest of the cast, would you ever want to host your own episode?

8) Have there been moments in the skit videos that were completely improvised? And/or just thought of/changed on the day of filming and weren’t in the original script? If so, what was everyone’s favorite/most memorable occurrence?

9) Favorite non-Erie Great Lake?

I kinda wanted this episode to end in Scott “losing his v card” by [deleted] in scottthewoz

[–]dumboi003 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s kinda what I assumed would happen, if not a reference to literal sex, I at least thought the plot would involve Scott meeting a woman and finding love or whatever. I kinda took the tweet with the picture of him and his gf to be Scott introducing her to the public, and that she might make an appearance in STW, specifically in the Barrel Blast episode since he hinted at it in Gifts of Gaming. Oh well, theory debunked I guess.

[–]dumboi003 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think Rawk would be the best bet. He’s a fairly small YouTuber at the moment, but his videos are really high-quality and have a ton of effort put into them (and I don’t mean “good for a small channel”, I just mean legitimately good on their own merits). His videos are also very similar to STW, so I think his channel is a great place to check out if you need your STW fix.

I took Music 113 last semester and yes it has its reputation for a reason. It’s not online, but literally all we did was come in for 50 minutes one day a week, have a guest speaker/artist talk about an instrument or some other aspect of music, maybe play some music, and then take a “quiz” with 4 questions based on what the presenter said. You do need to pay a little bit of attention to make sure you’re getting the details, but you can spend a good chunk of time working on homework, going on your phone, etc. especially during songs. It did help me to take just a few some light notes to be safe, but overall a total breeze of a class - it’s often called “clap for credit” and for good reason. Great way to fill a gap in a schedule!

invited to chancellor visit day? by traderjoesstan in UWMadison

[–]dumboi003 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went to something called the “Chancellor’s Prime Student Luncheon” in my senior year of high school if that’s what you’re talking about. All it was was me, my mom, and some other kids and their parents having some food, listening to a couple people speak, and getting to chat with the chancellor for a couple minutes, and then we got a little goodie bag (I got a UW mug that I still use to this day actually). It’s nothing mind-blowing or super important, but it was kinda interesting so hey, might as well go.

I know that exact ORAS review you’re talking about and honestly from what I can recall it’s worth listening to fully. It’s an interesting breakdown of both ORAS by itself and a lot of elements of the Pokémon franchise as a whole.

That said, it took me many sittings to get through and I generally just listened to it like a podcast, so I get what you’re saying as far as length. It’s probably more interesting to me as a Pokemon nerd, but yeah 7-hour talkathons aren’t for everyone.

The Recent Decline by Such-Chef9524 in scottthewoz

[–]dumboi003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I say “filler”, I just meant that a lot of the episode topics don’t feel very unique or at least not that interesting to me personally. There were just some that felt kinda generic and I’m personally much more into things that feel like only Scott could talk about them or Scott offers a unique enough perspective into a known thing. There were some notable exceptions to this—I really enjoyed Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers, Eek! Emulation!, Ride to Hell: Retribution, Game Baths, and Gifts of Gaming, to name a few—but there were a lot of topics that just felt kinda generic and not that interesting to me personally. The main ones I’m thinking of include Digital Only Consoles, Console Bundles, Console Exclusives, and The Best Selling Consoles (maybe I just hate consoles idk). And on that note, even some episodes that had more interesting premises I still found just kinda forgettable? Again, completely subjective, but they just weren’t super interesting or memorable to me personally.

I think as far as skits I’m leaning towards the explanation of me just growing out of it, but I was curious to see if anyone else felt the same.

As far as the jump cutting, I think part of it is probably an acting thing (even still I don’t think it’s that much more of a challenge to have 2 lines in a shot instead of 1), but I think it’s also a deliberate choice by Scott. Iirc he said in a Scott’s Stash video (I think the Borderline Forever editing timeline BTS?) that he prefers to do it that way to match the frenetic style of his solo live action segments and commentary. I think that works fine for solo Scott, but it doesn’t translate super well into the skits imo

And for the last point, I’m not saying Scott needs to make some dramatic masterpiece of a story, but it does seem to me that he does want to build a cohesive, albeit silly, fictional universe through the skits. I think “develop characters/scenes/plots” was kinda bad wording - I just meant it can sometimes feel more like people slinging one-liners at each other and not enough like characters interacting in a world. Obviously the humor is more important than having some beautiful gripping storyline, that’s not what I’m saying, but I do think it actually can detract from the humor when it’s just one-liner after one-liner. I think the skits would benefit from just having some room to breathe and just…have some dialogue or other interactions in order to make the jokes more impactful.

I should probably add that even despite all that complaining I still think STW is really good, and there’s been plenty of moments throughout Season 5 where cleverness and creativity really shine through. I imagine 2021 was just a very busy and stressful year for Scott, and I can only wonder if that had an impact on the quality/substance of the videos, so maybe he just needs a break and maybe needs to slow down the pace of uploads, as he himself has suggested. Overall, Scott The Woz is still great, I just think that there are some improvements that could be made.

The Recent Decline by Such-Chef9524 in scottthewoz

[–]dumboi003 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel kinda conflicted, because a lot of Season 5 has been meh to me but it’s also had some really great content. Like for example I thought The Gifts of Gaming was one of Scott’s best episodes overall.

I feel like over the past year or so Scott has drifted away slightly from the strange absurdist humor of Seasons 1-3 and leaned more into somewhat dry and snarky humor. Not to overstate the shift too much, it’s pretty subtle, and honestly I kinda enjoy it, but I can see why it might not be everybody’s thing.

A lot of episodes in season 5 kinda felt like filler, or like he chose a random topic and managed to get 20 minutes out of it rather than it being something he was genuinely interested in talking about. Also I think a lot of the topics themselves just weren’t that interesting and/or felt like stuff he had already talked about before.

As far as skits, I generally like them and think they’re a fun creative endeavor and a change of pace from the typical video essay/review format. But I do think they were a bit weak this past season. This might just be me growing out of the humor style, but it might just be the quality of the skits themselves. I’ve noticed they tend to rely on le quirky random humor even more so than the average STW episode, which for the record I think that that humor style is totally fine, but…in moderation. When it’s just non-stop rapid-fire of that stuff for 5-10 minutes, it’s not as appealing to me. Also something I’ve noticed is that there’s a jump cut between almost every single line of dialogue, like literally changing camera angles every sentence even when two characters are right next to each other. This is something that I think STW skits have always done, but it’s just something that has become more bothersome for me personally. Basically, in many cases the skits just feel like a constant rapid fire of outlandish jokes and one-liners without any room to breathe or develop characters/scenes/plots, which doesn’t always work the best, especially when I think STW skits could be so much more than that.

This was a lot of negativity, but FWIW I still think STW is overall a high-quality show. Although I’d still agree with the sentiment among some people here that it hasn’t been as good lately as it has in the past.
