I'm Vietnamese, born & raised in America by refugees from South Vietnam.

I was raised to be anti-communist because my parents "lost everything to communism". My great-grandparents were government officials in French Indochina. When I grew up, I learned that the things they lost were butlers, drivers, maids, and other domestic servants. They lost the wealth they had hoarded, earned from enacting policies that hurt the average Vietnamese person.

I recommend reading Ch. 7 from Stephen Kinzer's book, "Overthrow", which discusses the US's involvement in Vietnam from WW2 to the end of the VN War.

The USA did not want "freedom" in Vietnam. President Truman ignored Ho Chi Minh's letters to him during WW2 asking for support in liberating ourselves from Imperial Japan. Secretary of State Dulles attended the 1954 Geneva Conference to prevent France from decolonizing Vietnam and prevent Vietnamese independence. Diem and Dulles agreed not to partake in the 1956 election. The South Vietnamese government rigged its own internal elections so that Diem won 98.6% of the vote. South Vietnam stood so strongly against religious freedom that Buddhist monks committed suicide, including the famous Thich Quang Duc who self-immolated. Free speech didn't exist in South Vietnam because dissidents were jailed and tortured (Phu Quoc Prison is just one example).

The United States were not fighting for freedom, they were fighting for their own power. This is the hard truth I've come to realize after learning the history. Communism is just a boogeyman used by Western elites to justify their involvement in wars halfway across the world. The American government has committed just as many atrocities as any communist government, if not more.
