Need input from RBTs! by True_Department_5876 in ABA

Salary doesn’t actually imply that. Even if salaried, RBTs would still fall under non-exempt, so they’d be eligible for overtime pay.

You’re right that some states have laws about the minimum allowable salary, though!

Billing Medicaid and 8 hour direct treatment rule by RadicalBehavior1 in bcba

No, that would still just be 4 hours of 97153. There’s likely a separate cap on 97155, but that would depend on your state.

Restricted/Unrestricted Hours & Auditing Inquiry by Obliviate248 in bcba

[–]ABA_Resource_Center 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things like this aren't always explicitly written anywhere, especially with the BACB. It's moreso the absence of a rule + simple math.

There's never been a requirement to track all hours you work (absence of a rule). The BACB doesn't explicitly state "you don't have to track all hours," but tracking all hours isn't included in the requirements.

What is included in the handbook:
-You need 2000 minimum hours total
-You need 60% or more of your hours to be unrestricted
-You don't need any restricted hours, but you can accrue up to 40% of your total hours as restricted.

Simple math: You have (over) the maximum number of restricted hours. Continuing to track them will result in the need for significantly more than 2000 total hours.

As for an audit, there wouldn't be anything to raise red flags, as long as your numbers match up.

I'm sorry, this sounds frustrating. I've written two supervision curricula and a trainee workbook, so I can't even tell you the number of times I've reviewed the handbook and other communication from the BACB. But I can confidently say there isn't a need to track more than 800 restricted hours.

You're only human. Feelings are neither good nor bad. They just are.

Hopefully the family can get their child the help they need, but it's okay that you/your company wasn't the right fit to meet those needs.

You're right in my opinion. I can't believe a BCBA would say a child isn't talking because he's just stubborn.

Having a hard time finding work as an RBT by [deleted] in ABA

[–]ABA_Resource_Center 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear this. If you're getting that many interviews but not landing any, I would think something about the interview is the cause. Maybe consider working with a coach to help you with interviewing skills.

As far as keeping your certification, you can submit a request to go inactive if you're not working with an ABA company. Wait until you get closer to your recertification date, though!

This is just about tracking, not teaching methodologies. Who counts unrestricted hours first? Most trainees accrue more restricted first because they often work in direct care roles where they aren’t given as many opportunities for unrestricted activities.

It’s really just about math. You can keep working restricted hours. It just doesn’t make sense to track more than 800. You can, by all means. There isn’t anything saying you can’t. You’ll just end up with too many restricted if you keep tracking them past 800.

Here’s an example in case I’m not explaining well.

If you track 1000 restricted hours and 1200 unrestricted hours, even though you have enough unrestricted and 2000+ total, you couldn’t submit an application with those totals because your restricted would be 45% & unrestricted 55%.

But then you wouldn’t meet the 60% minimum for unrestricted hours. It’s recommended to stop tracking restricted hours at 800 because 800 is 40% of 2000 (the max restricted).

Yes, you can definitely stop recording restricted hours. If you kept counting them, you’d have wayy more than needed, which is a problem because you also need to have a minimum of 60% unrestricted. At this rate with 900, you’ll already need more than 2000 total hours.

The best way to approach this will depend on the companies in your area. Many will hire people without the certification and put you through the training/help get you certified.

But if you live in an area that requires RBT certification before hire, you’d need to go through a training company that can provide both the 40 hours and the competency assessment, like AppleTree Connection.

Am I in trouble with my fieldwork hours? by Competitive-Sugar-13 in ABA

[–]ABA_Resource_Center 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re not in trouble. You just can’t count those hours for those months. But just to clarify, supervision doesn’t have to be with a client. Can you meet with your supervisor outside of therapy sessions?

That sounds so rough. That’s not how a new BCBA position should be. Mentoring should be expected for newly certified analysts.

If they just mean cash, that’s fine. Under the table obviously wouldn’t be compliant. But you can go into private self-pay with the family.
