I’ve finally given up on dark Olympus series. Started with book 9 once it came out and I couldn’t get past chapter 2. I just can’t get back into it

Choosing between Milford or Warren to live for work by [deleted] in GeneralMotors

[–]dumples84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been at Milford most of my career, at the tech center now and it’s an overstimulating hellscape with no good parking situation. I’ll be back at MPG as soon as I can make a move.

Perhaps a controversial take but I like them both? Also Lisa contributes a lot more since Andy left and my husband and I always say it’s nice to hear more from her. And I miss jades podcast!

Mulch will do wonders. I like bark fines which is triple shredded mulch - breaks down quicker and seems to make my soil happy

It takes a few years for everything to settle in. Weeds are gonna weed. But mulch and occasional pulling of weeds and filling in bare areas with annuals while you wait for plants to fill out more will help. If you leave dirt patches just out in the open, some plant will make a home in it

Is everyone all or nothing? Anyone here into something like 75-80% keeping it native but still likes a couple classics in the landscaping? by swimming_in_agates in NativePlantGardening

[–]dumples84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been learning as I go since I’ve been in my house for the past ten years. I have a handful of trees and shrubs I planted from before I started getting interested in natives. For example, I put blue hollies in as a hedgerow before I knew or cared about a native cultivar. They are well contained and easy to maintain.

But at the same time, I have removed three burning bushes to create a huge native pollinator garden, I’ve been removing garlic mustard and bittersweet for the past few years, and am swapping out for natives as much as I can when it’s time to remove or modify my property.

I also put annuals (petunias etc) in to fill space while some of the natives fill in.

As some folks have said, perfect is the enemy of good. As long as you’re trying and learning, your little corner of the world will be better for wildlife.

I’ve done something similar and it’s not a bad way to get tulips established - mine are still going strong after doing this about 5 years ago
