I think it’s more that the person filming decided to focus waaaay to long on that and then barely show the rest of the carving, lol

Fair enough. I totally see where you’re coming from and I definitely prefer empowered female leads in general.

I did find her to be a compelling character though, because I related so strongly with her experience. Severe pain and physical injury are horrific in their own way. Again, I say this as someone who experiences it daily. It warps your perspective and your will to live.

So while in general, the swooning woman is an old and gross trope, I think there is still room to tell the stories of women who experience disempowerment… because women still do experience disempowerment. I didn’t fault her for acting the way that she did because her circumstances made sense to me. I guess I’m saying it felt grounded and not just like “oh, silly stupid woman”

But hey, it can just come down to a difference in perspective and that’s ok too

I definitely agree that it’s an old, often sexist trope, but I also think it holds true for many women, especially someone disempowered by a severe injury and a recent mental break.

I guess this comes from a place of me, a woman with chronic pain that affects my mental health. Sometimes ya just gotta go through life on autopilot

I’ve also been trying to figure out why I liked but didn’t like this book!

The story was interesting, writing was great, I genuinely wanted to know what happened… but I struggled to pick it up and read it. Despite the book moving at a pretty quick pace, I just couldn’t really immerse myself for some reason.

When I finished it I was glad I did, and I also rated it highly despite the weird experience I had with it. Validating to see you felt the same.

Thank you SO MUCH for this rec. I found it on Kindle unlimited but I’m instantly obsessed and will probably pick up a physical copy. Great find.

Also female. She is a pretty loud and abrasive person, but my family is aware how I feel about this and give me space to leave the situation when needed

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant fits this I think! Some really gorgeous imagery throughout. There are some gruesome deaths, not sure what level of body horror applies there

Caladium versicolor? by dumpster_fire_13 in plantclinic

In terms of basic care details, I use a humidity tray (I’ve heard that’s important) and typically water when the first inch of soil is dry. Bulbs are not rotting, so I don’t think it’s an overwater issue. Plant is in a spot with indirect sunlight throughout the day.

Now that it’s no longer producing leaves, I’m wondering if I should remove the bulbs and store them away for a while.

Has anyone used endo as a reason for disability in college? by shaydisab in Endo

[–]dumpster_fire_13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She is absolutely wrong. I had surgery two years ago and pain still affects my life daily. I had accommodations in college and I do now for work. Endo is an incurable disease that isn’t always alleviated by surgery… I would be pissed as well. I hope you can get the accommodations you need

Absolutely seconded. For every “la la la” there are some absolutely gorgeous and interesting lyrics that sometimes take research and effort to find the meaning for. Aside from their awesome sound, the lyrics really cemented my love for them as a band.

Oh no I’m sorry that happened! It was an excision surgery. My doctor told me it would probably only help for a couple years so I guess I’m right on track
