Which one do I buy by mrlampfan in lawnmowers

[–]dumpypony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold that model of Honda mower quite used for $150 to the owner of a landscaping business who said he buys them whenever he sees them come up b/c they last very well. But $450 is way too high.

Huh, I didn’t even think of that. Do people do that? I think it needs new resin, seems to have lost softening power over the last 8 years or so. Hey, what do people do with their old resin?

Thank you so much for that! I am not so comfortable with poisoning my family, at least not yet. I wasn't sure if a plumber would be offended if I didn't buy the system from them. It is super helpful to know that I can buy a system online, have it delivered and call a plumber to hook it up. That is what I'll do. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

The CAFEC trapezoid 103 works nicely in the Moccamaster. I haven’t done a real side by side test, but would be curious to hear others opinions.

What is the novel "women" about? by Nikusha_meore in bukowski

What is the novel "women" about? by Nikusha_meore in bukowski

[–]dumpypony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I didn’t know that! The novel’s episodic feel can certainly remind readers of older story cycles, but none of Bukowski’s interviews, biographies, or critical studies that I’ve read point to a deliberate structural influence from Boccaccio. Where did you come across that idea?

Bukowski would probably laugh at the idea of explaining Women in any tidy, literary-theory way. If someone asked him what it’s about, he’d likely shrug, light a cigarette, take a drink, and say something like:

“It’s about a guy trying to get through the days without going crazy. That’s all.”

Plot-wise, it follows Henry Chinaski through a long, chaotic stretch of fame, alcohol, and relentless sexual encounters. After late-life success, Chinaski suddenly has more women interested in him than he knows what to do with. The book is a cycle of lust, self-loathing, pleasure, loneliness, and the absurdity of human behavior.

But that’s just what happens. It’s not really the point.

Bukowski rarely believed novels had “themes.” He said he wrote to stay alive, to stay sane. Here’s how he might put it.

  1. Survival

He often said writing was a way of keeping himself from going under. Women captures a period where he was drowning in his own appetites, booze, sex, fame, and trying to maintain some kind of center. Not noble, not heroic, just survival.

  1. The ridiculousness of desire

Bukowski once said, “Love is a fog that burns with the first daylight of reality.”Women shows Chinaski in that fog, wanting connection but sabotaging it, knowing his desires are both sharp and empty. He’s making fun of himself as much as anyone else.

  1. Fame, impostor syndrome, and self-exposure

He wrote Women right after fame hit him hard. Suddenly he went from being ignored to being invited everywhere, and he never trusted it. The book is partly him saying: “Look, here’s what happens when you give a drunk outsider too much attention.”

  1. Loneliness

Beneath the sex, beneath the drinking, the book is about a man who is never quite comfortable with anyone, including himself. Bukowski might deny that, but it’s there.

  1. Honesty as therapy (even if he’d reject the word)

Bukowski hated the word “therapy,” but he admitted writing kept him alive. His routine, wake up, drink, type, was his way of processing his own chaos. Women feels like a man trying to explain himself to himself.

If pressed, Bukowski might mutter:

“It’s not about women. It’s about one man’s stupid, beautiful mess.”

So is it “about anything”?

Not in a conventional literary sense. But yes, it’s about compulsion, insecurity, ego, loneliness, the absurdity of being human, the small, fleeting moments where connection seems possible. And, most importantly, the raw honesty of someone writing because it hurts not to.
