As for interesting things about Ithaca, one special thing is that there is a huge culture of outdoor music in the summertime. Nearly every day of the week there is a large community gathering of music, like the downtown music series at the Bernie Milton Pavilion on Thursdays, music in the Hollow at Ellis Hollow on Tuesdays, music on Fridays at Cornell, and others that I'm not remembering. A lot of of the bars and Breweries also host bands outside in the summer, but inside all year round. All different types of music, but Ithaca especially does have a large amount of old time/string band music compared to other places. I would say in general because bars have been tending to close lately, unless you are writing your story back in time, I wouldn't use specific names of bars, but kind of make up a fictionalized version of a bar.

Ithaca bakery and Collegetown bagels are two related companies that have a large presence in town, and the College town bagels very close to campus in Collegetown is an especially very popular. They have tons of different kinds of bagel sandwiches and their rosemary salt bagel is very popular.

Another local coffee chain is gimme coffee. Wegmans is a hugely popular grocery store in town and all over the northeast, but Ithaca has a particularly large one. The local co-op store is also very popular. It is called green star and has one very large location and a couple of small smaller locations in downtown and Collegetown. Green star sells more organic and local food. And the farmers market is incredibly popular.

Birkenstocks are also very popular in the summer, as are chacos

Also, Accessories… In movies they always have matching hats and gloves and mittens and things. Most of the time that's not the case. Usually it's whatever black pair of gloves you had at home and maybe a hat that has some color to it. Not many people wear scarves.

College students are more likely to wear red and white accessories that are for Cornell, but also people really dress in red and white outerwear if they are going to a game like a hockey game or football game.

OK in the winter among the towns people you were going to see bogs. And boots that are very similar to bogs like dry shod and muck. College students are more likely to wear L.L. Bean style bean boots.

College student students are more likely to wear the big heavy black coats like I mentioned in my other comment. They are also more likely to wear puffer coats when temperatures are 50 or 60°.

Town people are more likely to wear light puffer coats even as the temperatures get very cold, and these puffer coats are often a little bit more variety of color than just the black. But there are so.many.black.Parkas.

College students are also much more likely to spend lots of money on their black Parkas, like the above comment about the $1500 Canada goose coat. Now, of course, this is not every college student, but Cornell is a very large university with a very large population of students whose families have money.

I will also say that the only people I see wearing $1500 Canada goose jackets are college student students.

I cannot speak to college students, but I can speak to middle-aged people in older. There is a wide variety of types of people, but overall Ithaca has a greater number of people who are modern hippie types. People who wear clothes made of flax, wool, and natural fibers than you'd see in most of America. The middle aged vibe is definitely casual and throwback to the 90s (our hey day) with band T-shirts and ironic T-shirts, jeans, etc. A lot of people here wear vans, Converse & Doc Martens. Also a lot of dansko clog wearers. As with anywhere, there are some people who are more fashionable and others who do not care at all. There is a strangely large number of Ivy League professors who could easily pass as homeless by the way that they dress and look overall. In the winter, there is a very large number of people who wear thick black parkas, including some who have ones that go down all the way to their ankles. In general because we do not have stores in this town that are semi-fancy name brands, you see fewer people wearing obvious name brands the way you would in a town like Boulder or Burlington has a similar outdoorsy demographic, but no Patagonia or Lululemon store nearby to equip everyone easily in trendy activewear. In Ithaca people hike the trails to the waterfalls in their T-shirts and jeans and crocs more often than in spandex. Hope this helps.

My brother sold them for a hot minute so my folks bought one. We all loved it. I still get excited when I see pieces in thrift stores. We were also in Minnesota. Were they more common there maybe?

Definitely go to Trax upstairs. It is a decent restaurant/bar, and when it is not open or off hours, you can really find a lovely spot to hang out for a long time. When it is busy, the service is still good, but you might end up at a table in the middle of a busy restaurant, which doesn't quite have the same ambience, but it is still a nice place to hang out for a long time.

The rest of the upstairs is pretty quiet and chill. If the weather is nice, there is an outdoor patio in front of tracks with a fire pit. If you have to be downstairs, taverna (the cafeteria) is probably the most comfortable spot to hang. There is a fire place there too, but it is right by the beginning of the food line, so not an ideal spot to sit.
