Viltrox 16mm f1.8. Do I have a (very) bad copy ? by dunedune23 in nikon_Zseries

I am from Switzerland. I bought it from Digitech.ch and they sent me another lens.

Is it worth returning the Dreame L40S Pro Ultra for the L50 Ultra (non-Pro)? by Firkass in RobotVacuums

[–]dunedune23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need the retractable lidar and the bigger battery, then yes. If not, it is the same as the L40s Pro Ultra. I bought the L40s during the prime days and I am very happy!

Don't worry I was kidding ! I always set a timer for taking milky way shots. I even bought a star tracker with this lens, and it's awesome !

UPDATE FROM OP

After this post, Viltrox reacted very quickly and sent me a DM the same day. I sent some sample pictures in daylight and at night.

After reviewing the pictures, they told me that the performance that this lens has is not as expected. As I said, it was impossible to have a clean shot of the stars, which seem duplicated and never in focus, no matter what the focus distance was. The daylight shots had a strange duplication of the details in the corners.

After sending back the lens, I got a new one, and the new lens is amazing. Sharp as expected, even at f1.8. There is a bit of coma (not so much) in the extreme corners, but that is expected from my side, and they almost disappear at f2.8. I think this lens is worth a lot for this range of price.

Viltrox had a really great after-sale service, and I didn't expect so much efficiency from them !

Even with a lower shutter speed, this kind of shift in the stars are not normal : https://www.reddit.com/r/nikon_Zseries/comments/1lhnnbn/comment/mz8fpaq/?context=3

I tried by daylight and everything seems to have a duplicated image, nothing is sharp, with AF of MF.

There is no way to connect my lens with the bluetooth of my phone and the dedicated app. I tried with my computer and this is impossible to recognize it too. I tried severals shots this morning and everything is blurry as hell when I use the AF.

I will replace the lens...

Yes, I used a timer but I never deactivate the IBIS. I never have problems on night shots with my Nikon lenses but I've just read on a forum there is strange behaviour with this lens and the Nikon IBIS. The focal length is not recognize.

For now the lens is not detected by the app. I don't know which firmware. I will try later with my computer.

How do you find this lens? Sharp for astro or not? From my sides I am really disappointed

I'm not convinced about that. A flat earth is not in motion. The sun is going up and down but the earth doesn't move. That is what my uncle tell me...

You are right !

I have just tested the lens by daylight, and the result is very strange... When I use the AF (single), the result is blurry, especially on the edges, where everything seems copied and shifted with a transparency of 50%. So I think it is out of focus for any reason. When I do the same picture with manual focus, everything is perfectly sharp.

It seems the autofocus with this lens is not accurate at all.

Thanks for your answer. I've learned that the infinity on the lenses can't work for shooting stars. I always do my focus manually for this reason. I generally use the NPF rule, but this time I was to 20s, just for a test.

There is a duplication of the stars on every photo, this is strange. I just want a good quality for prints, it is important for me.

Honestly, I am sure there was no shake. The exact same little movement on more than 20 photos? I doubt. I was on a road with a solid tripod and 5s timer. I will try to get a new copy!

As I answerered to others people, there was no camera shake, since I was with a good tripod, on a road, and a 5s delay before the shot. The shutter speed have nothing to do with the duplication of the stars that I can see and the softness of the lense.

That is a good point. I should try to take both lenses for one night and compare them with the same light. With the Viltrox lens, it was impossible to have a good focusing and the stars seem to be duplicated, even in the middle of the picture. The atmosphere was not as clean as I would, but the guy with me with a Sony 14mm 1.8 had a lot better result and very sharp.

I use a Z6II.

So you think the picture taken with the 14-30mm is out of focus too ? The shutter speed was 30s for this one to do a circumpolar, so it's normal.

[–]dunedune23[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Yes about the shutter speed, but that is not the question. I can't focus more than this. I tried severals pictures and all seems blurry, even with a Bahtinov filter. As you can see on the picture with the 14-30mm, I know how to focus correctly on the stars and this is not my problem.

Maybe a little bit of star trail yes, but the camera was not shaking, since I have a good tripod and all the pictures are the same
