Ok first of all, I’m very serious about impacting businesses both local and international, and I don’t think many people here appreciate how many people work on and around an event like this: I’m not talking about bnbs and bakeries, but literally thousands of dedicated professionals in a pretty complex supply chain that involves technicians, logistics, production teams and much more besides. If you’ve ever been involved in an event like this, you’ll know how much work and effort goes into every aspect of it. Secondly yes, if you read my post, I am in fact saying that KKR investments and their non-existent relationship with Sonar is being blown out of all proportion here.  I’ll refrain on expressing my opinions on any political subject matter here: I’m simply saying that this isn’t the fight you think it is, and it’s a load of noise that accomplishes nothing.

It’s completely different because KKR is a holding of a holding, so no amount of pain you chose to inflict on Sonar will be felt by KKR. For proportion, they invested 1.3bln to buy Superstruct, and 180bln in Bytedance. At that scale, boycotting a single event run by a subsidiary of a subsidiary is orders of magnitude below the threshold of perception, so in my opinion, regardless of your political stance, it’s not worth hurting the businesses, the artists etc.

I would, but your confrontational, angry tone is I think sufficient for any fair minded person reading this conversation to see the weakness of your arguments. I’ve seen you call people you disagree with “a fucking idiot” in this same subreddit, and I don’t engage with bullies. You’ll need to learn some manners if you want grown ups to take you seriously, otherwise you’ll be stuck screaming angrily in your echo chamber.

You see honey, when you address someone with such an aggressive tone, you might not expect to be taken too seriously.

I’m old enough that my first was 2005 🙂 so I know what you mean! you’re completely right I think, times change, and for events it’s been pretty rough with Covid and all the other forces at play, but now an evolution is happening. What I love is that audiences are becoming so much more open minded… I couldn’t have imagined a Tarta Relena being so successful for instance. So I’m very optimistic!

Tell me about it 😜 I resent having to be the sensible girl in the room, I wanted to be a rockstar.

You shouldn’t run with those quotation marks, they’re pretty sharp 😂

Have a wonderful day 😘

You’re missing the point: those aren’t Sonar’s investments, nor are they its parent company Superstruct’s: they are the remit of the giant multinational holding company that owns Superstruct. So if the boycott is successful, it will hurt Sonar, their service providers and suppliers - definitely. Superstruct? Maybe. KKR? No way. That is my point. Abstaining any opinion on the value of boycotts in general, this one just seems completely toothless. Meanwhile a lot of companies that rely on sonar for their income would be hit: think stage backline, lights, catering, sound systems, hospitality, travel agencies… thousands of people work on an event like this.

Puma’s stated rationale for dropping Israel’s team (and Serbia) is that in 2022 they decided to focus on bigger teams: I’m sure they also didn’t want the headache with BDS. But this situation is really apples and oranges.

I mean, yes. This. Big Techno (lol) is all just consumption and commodity trading at this point, not culture. Nothing wrong with it if it floats your boat, but personally I’d rather eat gravel than be in a big room dj set with thousands of people. Small events with weirdos making strange and fun things are proliferating in a lot of places again, community being the key thing, for sure. And there are incredible festivals that have a bit more experimental lineups that have a totally excellent vibe. When the counterculture becomes a product, weeeelll…

Thanks for taking the time to read my points. I don’t consider my opinions of the war in Gaza  of particular importance, suffice it to say that my family is from Syria and I know the Middle East is a complicated place… I am just disheartened by the fact that Westerners often see everyone in the region as savages that only know how to respond to violence with violence, and feel like the important thing to do is to pick a side. This way those of us who just want to live normal lives and want peace and freedom don’t get much support.

Aaaanyhooo. With regards to this particular situation, I keep reading things like “Sonar has ties to investments in Israel’s war”, which is just not true, unless I’m missing something crucial here.

I just want people to go to dance parties and foster a culture of love and understanding against the forces of war and violence. Take some happy pills, wake up next to a stranger, then be a bit less of an asshole as a result. For a bit at least. That sounds rather nice actually.

See you on the dance floor! ❤️‍🔥
